Broken spark plugs are common on Triton 4.6, 5.4, and 6.8L engines from 2004-2008. So I show you how to replace the spark plugs and minimize the chance of breaking the spark plug in a 5.4L Triton V8 in my Expedition. Some people get lucky and are able to remove the spark plugs from their 5.4 without breaking them and without doing any extra steps, but you want to do everything you can not to break them. A little patience can save you a lot of time. Each spark plug that breaks in your 5.4L can add over an hour of time to the job, depending on the extractor tool you are using; some are faster than others. The 3V 4.6L and 5.4L is found in many Ford and Lincoln vehicles including Expedition, F-150, F-250, Navigator, Explorer, Mark LT, Mountaineer, F-53 motorhome, Ford Mustang GT. The kit I use in the video is rented from AutoZone.

Last time I changed plugs was on my '89 Ram Charger in 2008. Silly how insanely complex this job has gotten since then! Your vid was very well done, and helpful as hell! Thanks!

Hey thanks man for making the video really informative and detailed and all the little tricks that you learn from doing it. I'm sure a lot of people appreciate that you made this video I do too bad I can't give you 1,000 thumbs up. I did subscribe and gave you a thumbs up. Now I know why Ford stands for found on road dead sorry had to put a little bit of humor in a very frustrating situation. You ever come down to Jacksonville I owe you a steak dinner

Wow that was fascinating. It's amazing that an extractor kit has to be designed to fix a bad engineering design.

Also the kit had been redesigned 3 times due to failure breaking its threaded tips .

Good job. Everyone has a different way of doing it mine was a two day process I soaked mine with pb blaster, marvel mystery oil, and some sea foam a cap full in each spark plug hole. I'd go out every hour and work them back and forth tell I got more and more of a turn out. I let them soak over night and the next day they came out and all the carbon that builds up on them was mostly off. 8 new plugs and no problem didn't screw up any o2 sensors.

Imagine being the first mechanic that had them break off and had to figure this out without the kit.

Great video! Will never buy a Ford Triton! I DO have a Merc Grand Marquis and I hope!! the plugs can be removed w/o this happening, which I’ll attempt in a few weeks after I spray PB in the hole and let it sit.

Somewhere somebody commented that is better to try first with an impact driver, slowly. I'm guess a battery powered one, not a powerful air comppressed ones.

@@aDIYCarGuy Do you think could be good to add some lacquer thinner to the fuel tank and run it for several days and see if helps cleaning the carb deposits?

@@phillipepinesh5343 It might help, even if it helps free up 1 plug it's worth it

@@aDIYCarGuy I just removed #1 without breaking it. I was concerned to do it but, found that this one in particular wasn't working having rough idle and acceleration so, I though, if is not working the carbon will be wet. So I poured some PB blaster and started first trying to thigthen a little bit and go back again just like 1/8 or less. After that, I used my 12v Bosch impact driver and give small back ant forth knocking untill I noticed by hand that it started to move around 1/4" , then poured more PB blaster and some liquid WD40. I keep by hand goig back and forth until got loose. To my surprise it was clean with no carb deposits. I don't know how will be the others but, will try once get the new plugs. My Expedition is 2007.

I recommend a shop vac with an extension tube to remove the ceramic bits. If the plug shattered in to small pieces you don't want to slow any down the hole.

How much would this cost to have someone else do this. It suck because I could do this if I was not so stupid short and weak. I replace spark plugs before but on much smaller cars.

I'm not sure you'd have to call around, it would vary greatly depending on the shop

It would be easier if the spark plugs were mor durable and did not break upon removal
@aDIYCarGuy
@aDIYCarGuy Год назад
exactly, that's the problem, the design of the spark plug, luckily some companies make a solid sparkplug that doesn't break during removal
