So bottom line; better to have your AR chambered in 5.56 so you can swap between the two?

Kindof, but the .223 Wylde barrel safely shoots both rounds and also keeps the benefits and accuracy of both

More clearly, some heavier bullets in 5.56 loadings can increase the pressure above .223 guidance when fired in .223 chambered rifles. Ruger "always" stated their mini-14 was suitable for either .223 or 5.56 ammunition.

Unfortunately, the .223 Wylde they sold me is on it's SECOND RMA trip for warranty. .223 OR 5.56 gets slammed into the lands and separates the bullet from the case IF YOU CAN MANAGE TO GET THE BOLT BACK. THAT SAID. The BCA-15 right side charger I have in 7.62x39 runs well and shoots realistic groups out to 200+ yards.

The BCA15 "Endure" in .223 wylde I bought took two RMA trips to BCA because of the chamber. rounds jammed into the lands up to the shoulder on the case. I don't know how they resolved it , but since getting back the second time, I have successfully fired 250+ rds of 5.56 NATO 62gr and 77gr with 2ish MOA consistently 100 yards from bench or prone position. I'm quite happy with it now. The American Black Walnut furniture is the envy of shooting range.

The difference between 223 and 5.56 is in the CHAMBER, not the round. The round itself is identical except for the radiused shoulder to neck transition on 223. Go look up the technical specs

From what I understand is that basically the case neck were the projectile meets the brass is .01 larger on the 5.56 and the swelling of the brass on combustion is what could create a ejection issue on the .223 round.
@jmitchell6094
@jmitchell6094 2 года назад
This tends to be more problematic on steel cased ammunition in .223 chambered rifles. Early AR-15’s not chambered in 5.56x45 are where I’ve experienced this and had to use a cleaning rod to knock out a stuck casing.

I think you said that backwards. 556 could cause an issue expaning in an only 223 rifle.
@stevem7

I love the fact that you condensed this into a "short". My understanding is that most newer .223 firearms can still safely handle the micro-slight differences in pressure with 5.56. But you're stating "cycling issues" and not specifically that the thing will blow up. Am I correct in what my understanding is? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--fmcdaAOkY4.html

Only freakin video that explains my situation. I just got my brand new Smith & Wesson M&P AR pistol yesterday. I went to the gun range today with 200 rounds of 223 ammo the gun would fire one round and then click nothing luckily the gun range had an on-site gunsmith whom looked at the gun and told me that if I put in 5.56 it will have no issue to run a few hundred rounds of that first to loosen up the gun and then maybe it'll fire the 223. He says the 223 does not have enough gas to push the bolt back. I purchased 100 rounds of 5.56 The gunshot all 100 rounds like it was nothing. I never had these issues with my AK. The gun fires great I think it's a good toy to keep around but if I have a real threat in my home I'm definitely going for my AK-47 I've had it for 20 years it has never had any misfire with any ammunition I put through it It's only been cleaned once in 20 years and that thing fires like there's no tomorrow I'm no gun expert I could care less about the online disputes between guns I just know from my own experience with my AK-47 Mac 90 that sucker has never had an issue

@twistofcain_666
@twistofcain_666 Год назад
*.223 and yes. 5.56 can shoot .223 because that is chambered for a hotter load whereas .223 Remington isn't chambered for such a hot load. Same goes for 7.62 vs .308 but it's the other way around. Gun chambered in .308 can fire 7.62 NATO rounds but not the other way around. Now a .223 Wylde will shoot both 5.56 and .223 and doesn't sacrifice as much accuracy as a gun chambered in 5.56 does so it's the best of both worlds.
@chrisrosenthal1210
@chrisrosenthal1210 5 месяцев назад
@@twistofcain_666 Actually they're both almost the same pressure. One is measured through a hole in the case below the shoulder using a copper disk crush method. The other in the throat area with a transducer. If you were to take both and swap the test types they're normally within about 2000 psi of each other. Most of the time you'll get more pressure variance than that just from swapping ammo brands. Where you can get into trouble is firing long bullets like the 556 M856 tracer in a short throated 223 chamber with steep laed angles. Bullets are timed sort of.... the bullet is leaving the case mouth faster than you get complete powder burn. Jam a bullet into the lands and it hangs around too long and pressure builds to higher pressures than intended. Microseconds matter in internal ballistics lol

This is false, 5.56 and .223 were measured in different ways, recently they were both tested in exactly the same way, and guess what? The pressure is nearly identical and not enough difference to make a difference. I've fired thousands of 5.56 through .223 rifles and zero problems. This horse has been beaten for decades and not one single solitary documented incident of a 556 causing any sort of issue beyond maybe a tight extraction in a very tight chambered rifle, once again this myth is being propagated for whatever reason.

So tired of hearing people say 556 is loaded to higher pressure...which is not true..first..556 pressures are measured differently..second..military ammo has thicker cases which leads to smaller internal diminsions which then leads to a higher pressure with the same powder loads.. why is this confusing...

It means you can shoot both types of ammo, accuracy depends on the individual experience though. Some say it's the 556 while other states it's the 223, you have to test it out for yourself and find out.

5.56 wasn't developed until after Vietnam. Vietnam ended in 75. The 5.56 was developed in the late 70s and entered service in 1980.
@chrisrosenthal1210
@chrisrosenthal1210 5 месяцев назад
@@gavinbaker3886 Actually it's just that NATO didn't adopt it until 1980. Even though the early Colt lowers were marked 223, they still had the 556 long throat NATO dimension chambers. When the commercial short throat, steep laed angle "223 Remington" was standardized by SAAMI, colt started stamping 5.56 on their receivers. I think that was in 64 or 65. It's just that NATO didn't accept and standardize "5.56 NATO" until 1980. It had been around for a while already, 5.56 M193 was used all through Vietnam. NATO did require a bullet change in 1980 though. They felt the fragmenting properties of the M193 that we had been using for a decade was too inhumane, so they specked the 556 NATO to use the SS109 bullet.

So where on your barrels is it stamped? I got a BCA full upper with the side charging handle. Took it home and 1st round shot ok, 2nd round the shell jammed, cleared the shell, next round did the same thing only this time it was a pain to get the shell out. I was told it was a .223/5.56, but clearly it may be a .223 Rem only, but there is no stamp I can see on the barrel anywhere. Can you help me out here? I really don't want to shoot this or sell it to anyone due to not knowing if the next time it will be catastrophic failure, I don't want myself or anyone getting hurt. 5.56 isn't really that "much" hotter. It's not loaded any "hotter" actually. The only difference is the case wall thickness. Makes the chamber pressure slightly higher. Minutely...
@moosesimpson8625
@moosesimpson8625 2 года назад
There are no dimensional differences. The difference is in the neck of the barrels. And also in pressure testing. Higher pressure in a 5.56, but NATO also tests casing pressures in a different location. Thats why you assume there may be cycling issues, but really there's not, unless you're using a BCA, which can't cycle anything reliably.

Nope!!! 5.56 is NOT a hotter round. 5.56 and .223 overlap significantly in charge loads. Do some thorough research and you'll find the only real difference between the two is how and where they are measured for pressure!!! I have fired plenty of 5.56 ammo in rifles chambered for .223 and everything was just fine!! Might have to seat a couple 5.56 rounds a little deeper but that's not a big deal.
