Watch the Wayne Kieth video where he shows how he adjusts his timing with a cable when he switches over to woodgas. Timing won't change on its own bases off of fuel, its mechanical. The distributor needs to be turned to advance it to make get the efficiency up.
That's nice for vehicles like my Lumina APV that has a mechanical distributor. But I have a feeling that newer vehicles that are programmed as "Flex Fuel" vehicles will be measuring combustion impulse and adjusting timing to accommodate fuels with a different burn rate. I'm told that E85 has a slower flame.
