In this Kings Canyon National Park section of the John Muir Trail, I am thru hiking in the rain! While I walk by Evolution Creek and Muir Pass, rain, storms, and flooding slow me down a lot. Luckily, I make friends on the trail and it stops raining for Mather Pass.

I am certain that anyone who has completed that trail, can easily sympathize. I have not done any hike of this magnitude, I got mad respect for you. 57 miles was my longest, and that was for survival training in Alaska🤷‍♂, and I would never willingly attempt again....

Although, in said survival training, they did teach us to tether anything that is essential to survival, to the pack, which makes sense now that I think of it.

Maddie, I just watched video 5/7 and I have to say, I was shivering with you under that tree, cold and wet. I’ve been in that same predicament. But I must admit, since I already know the outcome, you survived and have since covered many miles in your van, I did have a good laugh. Then, of course, when the sun comes out you’re all happy, I’ve been in that same mind space also. I’m sure you’ve herd the saying, “Don’t stop hiking on a bad day”, and it did get better for you. Loosing your water bottle was a game changer, but how you overcame and adapted is wonderful. Looking forward to finishing your other JMT videos. Your honest opinion about gear, and your own mistakes, has taught me and prepared me for my JMT 2023.

Evolution Valley-That's a tough section of trail because once you're in there, you're committed. There's no way out except the way you came or the way you're headed. I too spent some terrifying hours stuck in a lightning storm probably a few hundred yards up the trail from where you were hunkered down. I've never been so worried about hypothermia in my life! July is the most beautiful month of the year to hike those mountains, but the afternoon rainstorms can be scary! Good for you for pressing on... :)

I have to agree. That camp near La Conte canyon ranger station near the Bishop Pass Junction I’ve always thought is a good spot for a zero day, better than MTR honestly. Once you commit past Bishop Junction you are committed.

There's no doubt that being wet for hours on end is a miserable, soul-sucking experience - I don't think people realize how cold you can get, even in the summer. Losing your filter was really bad luck 😞. So glad you got a sunny day in the end - those days make the difficult ones a little easier to bear. One of my favourite things about backpacking is waking up somewhere and washing my face in a cold mountain creek, so I totally understand how you felt when brushing your teeth! What a place Kings Canyon looks like with all those valleys and lakes 😍

I’ve worn exclusively Altra for trail running, road running, and hiking for eight years. Your experience is not typical. Give Altra a try again if you get a chance at a good price. They’re typically great. But avoid waterproof shoes just in general for hiking. They take too long to dry once wet.

Honestly, the only water on the JMT that I would have great reservations about drinking unfiltered would be the Lyall Canyon watershed, that is lyall creek coming down from the headwaters of Donahue Pass and all water north of that going into Yosemite valley. While I do bring a filter and use it. Somewhat, there are water sources that I drink out of without. I’ve known many old timers that have hike the area for 30 years with no filtration and never had an issue. But with the huge increase in traffic in the last 10-15 years filtering is a good idea.

To anyone reading this, next time you are hiking this section of the JMT, consider taking a layover day near the junction of the Middle Fork Kings and Palisade Creek, and hike DOWN the Middle Fork to its junction with Cartridge Creek and back. It is perhaps the most awesome canyon in the entire High Sierra, and maybe 4 miles each way between Palisade and Cartridge creeks. I consider the MF Kings to be the Sierra’s grandest river, and Devil's Washbowl to be one of its grandest places.

@BeerinBeautifulPlaces
@BeerinBeautifulPlaces 2 года назад
There were other people walking past the lake every now and then so I wasn’t in the skinny dipping state of mind! And yeah, that wasn’t the most pleasant interaction but I find that when people have to assert they’re an expert at something, they NEED to be the expert. Like maybe they’ve been bullied or put down a lot. So I was trying to bare that in mind while getting through that conversation!

you should be jumping in those water holes!! Do you recommend some sort of different waterproof shelter to bring? I wonder if using waterproofing spray truly helps keeping it dry? I have some, and used it for a kayak cushion but it didn't seem to help. The view you showed were amazing! That sucks about your water btl, I guess it is wise to bring a spare in case you lose or crack it? About time you jumped in that water! I bet it was refreshing but cold!
@BeerinBeautifulPlaces
@BeerinBeautifulPlaces 2 года назад
Most of the time, I don’t have time to take a swim or it’s cold enough to not want to. My tent never leaked on the inside, just had lots of condensation, which it seems to me like any tent would. I’ve heard mixed reviews of waterproof spray too! I brought water purification tablets as my back up in case something happened to my filter

I'm sorry for the realy weird question, but did you meet another hiker near La Conte and Palisade creek who was getting water from a small creek that ran across the trail? Put your socks and a light shirt in your sleeping bag footbox. The warmth from your feet will probably dry them out overnight. Works best with synthetic insulation as it passes moisture easily.

Good thing there’s no Bullet Ants in USA, one of the most painful stings in the world hence the name. I was carefully watching where I sat etc when I was hiking the jungle in Costa Rica and never wore shorts for that reason and others like ticks etc. Some National Parks like Corcovado do not allow any insecticide to keep streams clear of pollutants and you must have a park approved guide so you obey the rules. Love your journey, not easy but I like your attitude. What kind of pillow was it? I have a Trekology for quite some time and love it Teton has good ones too but I think theirs are self inflating, might be bulky for your pack.
@BeerinBeautifulPlaces

@@BeerinBeautifulPlaces wow, expensive but very good quality, I was looking into one of their inflatable pads but decided for a Big Agnes, they had a discount on a 4.7 R value that should keep me cozy in the mountains. Some companies have sales right now because of the holiday weekend, if you’ve finished the trail it might be worthwhile to check it out. Swayer might have it too to replace your filter, so sorry about it.

I was in Israel for 15 days and around day 13 I was ready to leave. It was a great experience that I will remember always but I was ready to leave. The restaurant food is very expensive and not very good. All restaurants are owned by Jews whether it is Chinese, Mexican, or French. Not to be rude but Jewish people cannot cook. I ate falafel sandwiches most days. The stores are very primitive, no supermarkets there. When I got back and slipped into my car I was happy to be home.
