On Mojogrip, we’ve showcased several different airplanes from 1 seaters to 6 seaters. Recently we’ve seen new entrants of 2 seater airplanes particularly in the light sport and experimental market. So today we are looking at 5 two seater airplanes that you can buy and build between $100,000 - $200, 000.
Here are the 5 aircrafts listed in the video.
1. Saberwing - This is a well documented aircraft on the channel, we’ve seen it and flown it. The Saberwing is a 2 place experimental airplane that is made of wood and fiberglass. The airplane can be built in less than 2000 hours. Kit starts at $32,000 and you can have a finished airplane for about $50,000
RANGE: UP TO 600 miles
SPEED: UP TO 160 mph
CAPACITY: 2 PEOPLE
PRICE: $50,000
2. Saberwing LSA - The Saberwing LSA is the light sport model of the original Saberwing. This model comes with a fixed tricycle landing gear rather than a tailwheel. It does carry 2 people and uses a 100 HP Corvair engine. Kit also starts at $32,000 and you can have a finished airplane for about $50,000
RANGE: UP TO 500 miles
SPEED: UP TO 130 mph
CAPACITY: 2 PEOPLE
PRICE: $50,000
3. Avocet AV24 - The Avocet AV24 is the newest experimental airplane to soon hit the General aviation market. Designers Steve Situm and Ian Burnham both have over 4 decades in aircraft design and kit builds combined.They are claiming to have designed an aircraft that’s harder to stall and much easier to build; build to taxi within a month.
RANGE: N/A
SPEED: UP TO 250 mph
CAPACITY: 2 PEOPLE
PRICE: $130,000 - $180,000
5. Rutan VariEze - The VariEze is a homebuilt experimental aircraft with a canard design, meaning you have 2 sets of wings. One in the back and another in the nose. VariEzes are not only some of the most affordable aircraft to build or buy, they are also some of the most fuel efficient aircraft in the market.
RANGE: UP TO 2010 miles
SPEED: UP TO 180 mph
CAPACITY: 2 PEOPLE
PRICE: $30,000 - $50,000

Hey Mike, Nice video, thank you for posting it. I been watching for a while, like you I love, love, love planes! Years ago I bought a Sonex A project. But family, work, and moving around a few states (CA, MI, GA) put a crimp in having a workshop to build a Sonex. Since those days they've come out with a model "B". A little larger inside, easier to build, etc. With same cruise speed and load. Kits are reasonably priced with options for 1 or 2 seats. Last time I checked they were saying you could get into the air with a 1 seat for around $23K (fus, engine, paint, interior, all.....). Schedule is opening up for me now, so I'm reconsidering what to build....I really appreciate hearing about all the things you're discovering!! You seem to really like the "fast glass" (as us old timers used to call them). What's your take on the cheaper, aluminum and pop-rivet options? BTW - A Sonex can cruise around 120/140 with a ~$4K engine

Hi Mike, I believe the lsa speed limit is at sea level at Max continuous power... So some lsa aircraft post TAS cruise speeds well above that at 8k-12k.

That sounds like the old joke about someone building a boat in their basement. I have heard of people doing that, and it sounds stupid, but most of them actually do have a plan on how to get it out. The most common way is they plan the boat / plane build to be done around the time they start on an expansion project for their house. They'll dig new basement space next to the existing one and break down the wall to get the finished project out before the new addition gets built over it.

I have heard more than one story about people cutting holes in their houses to get their completed projects out... whups!
@slimwilly573
@slimwilly573 4 года назад
I mean after putting that many hours into something I personally wouldnt think twice about breaking something to get what prob costed 1 maybe 2 divorces and who knows how many beers lol.. so either they have an idea of how to get it out or they dont care about the wall he or she is gonna cut out to get it out as long as it gets out, but that's also a sure fire way to guarantee that no one is gonna break in and steal it from you when they dont have a way to get it out lol

I once built a cedar strip canoe in a storage building that was somewhat narrow and the only door was near the end of the building. When I finished the project I realized that I wouldn't be able to angle the canoe enough to get it out the door. It only took about 5 min with a chain saw to free my new canoe, it was however a rental house and storage building.

Hey Mike, I love your videos. I’ve never thought of pursuing any flight machines until recently. When I watched your factory tour of Mosquito helicopters, the bug bit me hard (pun intended). So thanks a lot for setting me on a path to spend money I don’t have. But those mosquitoes look like they would put a grin on your face that would take days to get rid of.

Thank you for this review. Years ago I was following the experimental line up pretty intensely.. super intense! Dad and I used to visit Air Venture and stay the whole week. But life happened, a couple recessions, lost a business or two, lost family members (including dad)... Now, after approaching retirement, I can finally dream again. If your list, only the Long Easy is the only one I'm familiar with. Although the first one bears a striking likeness to an earlier kit that used a mono wheel.

The last airplane you discuss, the VariEze, is pronounced "very easy." That's because at the time, 1974-75, it was much easier to build than other plans-built aircraft. The N-number of the example in the video indicates that this is a fairly recent aircraft, built in June, 2003. It has several non-standard modifications, including the red paint, which is strictly forbidden. Red heats up almost as much as black. On a plastic surface the heat can actually melt the underlying structure!

120kt is 138MPH, not 132. Other planes you could build in this budget (and actually finish them, not just pay for the kit) are: Vans RV-7, Kitfox 7 (and most other Avid Flyer-based aircraft like the SuperSTOL), any Rans aircraft, any Zenith aircraft, Bearhawk LSA (a taildragger -- yes, LSAs can be taildraggers) and of course the Sonex.

I have built two Thorp T-18s, two Glasair TDs, a Rand KR-1, a Fisher Youngster, and I am currently finishing a Davis DA-2A and a Quickie Q-1. Obviously, I like to build airplanes. My most expensive plane to build was my second Glasair TD, which cost me about $35,000 complete, but of course, I had to build it. That TD is today worth maybe a little bit more than it cost. Generally, YOU LOSE MONEY on a homebuilt, that is unless you are building Carbon Cubs. The cheapest plane I have built was the Rand KR-1, which cost $1300 complete including the VW engine, which I rebuilt myself. Obviously, this is an extreme example, but it shows that airplanes don't have to be expensive if you have time and are willing to scrounge parts.
@blkicemike4857
@blkicemike4857 4 года назад
@DaveM,.. I do agree with you about no such thing as inexpensive plane.Although the $70k entrance I would have to disagree! Not tryna be a dik or anything!its just that I've seen some nice cloudhoppers {single engine carrying 2-4 passengers}under $20k. Yes a lil dated but low hours & excellent shape. I found a Cessna cub I 💭 think unsure exact name, it had seating for two people one in front of the other not side by side for $20k. The same lady owned another that carried up to 4 people total for $16k it was a 1978-80 year model but only had like 100hours on it! Wow 😳!! I thought this was too good to be true?? Turns out her husband died in a ski accident in Colorado 10+yrs back and he only flew the plane when they visited their vacation home there.So basically flew from eastern part of U.S (KY,Tenn,?)to Colorado once or twice a yr. He also kept the upkeep to very high standards in his hangar.Honestly, that's probably not a deal you'll come across daily, but,.. there's plenty planes for sale under $30k actually not bad looking at all. I guess it really comes down to what each individual is comfortable with

Depends what you want, I kind of want an ultralight being sold near me at $7,500. It’s not gold plated or anything but it’s a cute little bi-wing (18ft wingspan, 70 inch adjustable prop, 60 HP engine) in decent shape. Since it’s ultralight it wouldn’t need insurance/license or a lot of things so the cost is basically down to hanger fees (which if you live on farmland, it’s pretty cheap to hang it in a barn). Being an aerospace engineer I personally wouldn’t let any mechanic touch my car let alone a plane I would be trusting with my life (if a normal person can rebuild an automatic transmission, plane maintenance on something so simple as this type of aircraft really would just look like another day of working on a lawn mower). So really only hanger cost is deterring me from that. Otherwise multi-seat and yep, licensing and aircraft mechanics will really rack up that cost! I have seen some nice $8k all metal “experimental” (extremely by the books/generic design, but really well done) but they have bigger costs from maintenance and hanger fees (plus it was also 60HP except it weighed like 950 lbs!). I could make one cheaper myself, but really the cost of the plane itself is pretty low from what I’ve been looking at (plus I just need to save up for like 2 months to buy one used in good condition, and that’s probably faster than I could make one safely, with the benefit it’s been tested!)

Everyone wants "fast" the point of being slow 3:31 are twofold #1. The Landings are easier because you have more time (meaning for instance; more time over the runway). #2 Slow Stall Speeds translate to shorter Takeoff rolls.

Si, vous présentiez un " Projet électrique Volant " ce serait plus pertinent ! If, you presented a " Flying Electric Project " it would be more relevant !

Wait a minute! An LSA that requires a Private license? How does that work?
@thefreedomguyuk

They got that wrong. You dont need a PPL, you just need the relevant training and endorsement on your LSA.

Saberwing looks very low to the ground, seems like that could be an issue on cross-wind landings.

It’s a tail wheel type so respect a low crosswind limit or pay the price.

Instead of the variez, you should be talking about the LongEz. Bigger, better all around.

John Denver disapproves

I've heard his last words spoken directly to another person was Denver complaining over the fuel valve being fitted so that he couldn't reach it safely... Some peculiar decision-making there. "I can't reach the fuel valve when airborne.... let's not refuel before the flight...."

You never mention the Mini-Max line, that can be purchased for less than 10k! I bought my Eros, used, for $3,500, ready to fly! $9 per hour to operate! Can you find me one cheaper? All of these are at least 3 times more! $100,000? I would purchase a used production plane first! Why not make one on affordability? We can all dream of a Glasaiir, but we are limited by $!

Minimax doesn't really work well as a cross country plane

@@swelch140 I have the Eros experimental, with 20 gallons of gas and 5 hour endurance. Had it over Mt Saint Helens at 11,400 feet. there is video of it on my channel. It even has ADSB, and EFIS. Check it out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xOGkTK3zMH8.html
