Since wheels are rotating, it means they create a gyroscopic effect. A gyroscopic effect is what makes it difficult to twist and turn a rotating object (also one of the reasons why bikes become more stable at higher speeds). Now, the more rotating weight, the higher the gyroscopic effect is. Changing to carbon wheels shaves off so much rotating mass, and thus exponentially decreasing the gyroscopic effect which makes it exponentially easier to lean your bike into a corner, as well as get it back up and flick it into the opposite direction. If you just shave regular weight off of a bike, all you do is change the mass of the body that moves, but it has no effect on the gyroscopic counteraction that the wheels create. That's why it makes such a huge difference, and why people invest in carbon as well as forged aluminium wheels etc. It also means acceleration and braking is increased since you don't have to spin up as much weight - but the greatest difference happens in the cornering ability of the bike for sure - as well as the unsprung mass itself helps with braking and handling bumps and all maneuvers that have an impact on the shock and forks (which is almost everything you do on the bike). An expensive mod for sure, but quite possibly the most rewarding mod out of the box that exists.

Some of these mods go back decades. Some RD250LC / RD350LC / Suzuki GT250 X7 owners were replacing their heavy cast wheels with lighter spoked (wire) wheels for track racing and road because this saved a few pounds of unsprung weight, even lighter if they used alloy rims. Cast wheels are the heaviest wheels you can fit on any bike. Scott oilers have been around since the 1970's, though oil bath and gaitered fully enclosed chains last the longest. Dyno Tune has also been around since the 1970's though originally for cars. Same reasons as for bikes today, OEM settings are generic, never ideal. I had braided brake hoses on my 1977 Suzuki GT550B. It gave a massive improvement to the effectiveness and feel of the front brake system. A very old school mod indeed. Other simple mods are: Filling all the cable feed in holes on the bike's Molex (the industry name for the multiple connector blocks) electric system with silicon sealant to prevent water rotting the wire in the connector terminal. If one lives in an area notorious for rain (Seattle, Wales, Manchester, etc.) it'll save much misery a few years down the road. Tuning the front fork oil to suit the rider's weight. Lower weight oil if the rider is light, higher weight oil if the rider is heavy. If your bike nose dives easily when braking then the fork oil is too low a weight. Fork oil is also colour coded (5W is red, 20W is green, etc.). Fork oil can be mixed in ratios to give intermediate weights. There are tables for doing this. Racers do this.

$30 steering damper and fork clamp to mount it. Smooths out steering vibrations that you have, and tank slappers.
@Real_MisterSir
@Real_MisterSir 5 лет назад
Haven't ridden a bike with steering damper yet. Does it affect the flickability and low speed handling, or is it a gradual mechanic that only reacts when extreme movement occurs (such as vibrations or tank slapper as you say)?. I've considered getting one just to prevent potential tank slappers, but I don't wanna do it if it compromises the flickability and nimbleness of a bike in any way

@jonathanlorbacher2056

Where are you finding a $30 steering damper?
@HeroRR
@HeroRR 5 лет назад
@@Real_MisterSir It depends on the Steering Stabilizer... not sure where one would get one for $30, I think he meant $300. Ohlins is the best steering stabilizer hands down. But they are pricey and can be difficult to mount. Scotts and GPR are cheaper and easier to mount, but not as good as Ohlins. Some bikes, such as my CBR600RR have OEM electronic Steering Dampers. The way these work is that they are basically OFF under 20 MPH but once you reach that speed where on counter steering matters the electronic stabilizer stiffens up. This gives you high speed stability, along with low speed ease of use. I'm not sure how the other ones really work as I have no personal experience owning one. My friend had one though... a scotts... and I found it difficult to move the bars at lower speeds compared to my bike. There was an adjustment knob on it though.

That "direct to the calipers feel" you got with braided steel brake lines is for real. Rubber brake lines will flex a bit when you apply braking pressure and your brakes may feel a bit spongy, but the braided steel lines will not do that so they feel more firm and connected to the brake calipers. You can really feel a big difference on cars/trucks when you swap to steel braided brake lines.
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 4 года назад
I think the thing he should have mentioned is that the stainless lines aren't necessarily any more than the OEM ones. I was surprised that the Venhill lines I've got coming were essentially the same price as the OEM ones that Kawasaki sells. Not to mention the fact that I was able to get them in red with black metal at the ends which should look a lot cooler. From what I can tell, the rear brakes are somewhat debatable, some people like them and some people don't.

Plus one on the Scott-oiler. It is brilliant. My previous bike (Series I Ducati Superlight, in semi race trim, Dynojetted and ridden HARD, sed occasionally for racing) had an Aluminium rear sprocket installed in 1999, and I did not touch the chain or its adjustment AT ALL (OK, OK, I had to during tire changes of course) for 25K kilometers. When I got rid of the bike in 2015 the new owner who lived across the street from me had it for another 4 years and never touched the chain either. That 1999 chain was the last one I bought. My current bike (bought in 1994) got a new chain in 1995 and in 1998 and then it got a scott oiler and since then it never wore out a chain again... It's frugal too: If I had to estimate a bottle of oil easily lasts somewhere in the neighbourhood of 50K if the oiler is properly adjusted. Scott Oilers are THE thing to have if you ask me...

I miss he best upgrade I have ever made: Adjustable race foot pegs. Better grip and better (after adjustment) foot position. I would also include Öhlins dampers, but that may be a more "normal" upgrade, even if they cost more than the carbon wheels.

I think the "Mods"; most of them, could improve the Bike & Riding experience!! But, one thing I will say is not everyone can afford Carbon Fiber Rims (BST or other Brands)!! I wish I could put both a Front & Rear BST set on my 2002 Honda CBR1100xx Super Blackbird! That would certainly improve the handling on my Blackbird..;-)

Scott oiler, almost had me off my bike when after using the correct oil for 4 months and periodically checking , one day came into a left hand bend and my back end slipped , I almost came off , I thought I had a puncture or blowout , but no the Scott oiler decided to throw out that much oil it went all round the edge of my tyre , and I can assure you any second hand bike I buy that’s fitted with one , it will be instantly removed and binned ,, cheers for the video , Shane uk 🇬🇧

Does front wheel weight influence the risk of tank slapping? Less grip on the road if lighter means more risk for a tank slapper? I have heavy steel wheels on my stock Suzuki across and want to make it kickass but don't want to risk tank slapping. Does weight influence this specificly the front wheel?

Invested considerable chunk of my hard earned in BST wheels for my road bikes , both are 2nd Gen models , ZX14R and Hayabusa . Yes , considerable expense , but for me , that investment is well worth it . I truly love the handling and acceleration benifets these ultralight wheels bring . Combined with correctly setup suspension , and even big cc sport tourers can carve very well . You don't even have to choose carbon , any set of lighter weight wheels will be beneficial to your ride . If you plan on keeping your ride long term , well even better , then the purchase outlay can be worth it .

Top mod, sintered brake pads, almost free if you do it when you need to change your pads anyway, and I could easily brake with two fingers the back wheel just skipping the ground at the track. It offers the same performance on the road, but I don't brake that hard on the road.

@rigididiot
@rigididiot 2 года назад
I have done both (scott oiler myself, Osco for others) and I seriously wonder if the difference between those two is too large a step, if you should be working on your own bike... Sorry... They are both pretty straightforward to install, The scott oiler is "fit, adjust and forget" and can be hidden completely out of sight (if the bike allows it), the Osco needs to be in a place where the rider can reach it while driving. Scott oiler anytime for me. MUCH better, very consistent results.

Sorry mate, but I have to disagree with your 6th mod "Scott oilers". :-( Todays bikes have O or X ring chains which means the rollers are sealed, so the only reason you would oil the chain is to stop it going rusty on the outside. And if you don't have it set up right, you are throwing oil all over your rear tyre, "not a good idea" I have a V Strom. "granted only the 650" but it's just coming up to 34,000 mls. on the original chain. I rest my case. Totally agree with the rest of the mods.
@HeroRR
@HeroRR 5 лет назад
Thanks for the input! I never used one before but i heard some people raving about them. I heard there’s an adjuster you have to set extremely low and you want it on the outside so it doesn’t get on your tire.
@Pianissimo1970
@Pianissimo1970 5 лет назад
That may be true, but the o-rings still need lubrication, friction is the horse powers worst enemy, and if u dont lubricate ur chain u'r o-rings will crumble. Beside that, the rollers inside the link are not protected with o-ring
@tougerider1827
@tougerider1827 5 лет назад
I have used a Scottoiler extensively. I only replaced one chain in the 100,000+km I used it. It kept the chain in primo condition and made for one less thing to worry about. One big benefit rarely mentioned is the reduction in friction over the long term. Notice how your bike rides smoother and rolls further after a chain lubing? The Scottoiler ALWAYS feels like that. Downside, it can be messy and the oil needs to be fed to the rollers for best effect. Applying straight to the outer side of the rear sprocket worked best for me. Still got oil on the rear rim and some fine misting on the tyre but that never seemed to bother the tyre's traction. From personal experience, great mod! Thoroughly recommended. Disappointed you recommend a product you've not used yourself though. There are other auto oilers out there...

@@tougerider1827 I bet It's only about 1in 10 or even less that keep there bike for 100.000kms. Look at used bike sales, how many 10 or 15 year old bikes with less then 5.000Kss on the clock, but if it works for you enough said.
