Time Team's Dani Wootton takes a look at some of most amazing recent archaeological discoveries across the world. In this round up, we shine a light on fascinating sites and artefacts that add to our understanding of the people who came before us.
The discoveries include an incredible Bronze Age hoard, some of the world's oldest cave paintings, fossilised footsteps, Roman baths and more.

I love Dani’s enthusiasm, just love it! I get caught up in all her enthusiasm. These were excellent finds too. I thought the foot prints were amazing, but 45,000 year old cave paintings, wow! 45,000 years. Now I cannot decide. 🤣

It still boggles my mind how footprints can last so many millennia. I remember the Goldcliff episode, was totally amazed at those print survivals. These are much older. I'm curious now on just how were they made, what kind of surface was it when those ancient people walked on it.

I loved this - as a huge fan of timeteam for years and years im looking forward to its return - but this look into whats happening world wide was a great Way of introducing something from outside the UK - personally im in Denmark - and would love if we had a Danish time team - but alas…

Thank you Dani and to all the Time Team members who take the time to show us and educate us about these tremendous archeology finds from around the world! I have thoroughly enjoyed the programs of the ancient finds in the UK, but many of us live in countries far from the UK. This program shows us what is being found in so many other places some of which your viewers live in making them so much more relevant to us. I hope that younger generations get interested in archeology so some day what is current, will then be found and history will continue to be preserved. Again thank you!

I'm Australian, and knew of the kangaroo drawing, but the age of the Indonesian one is amazing, so few things survive the hot humid conditions over there, also amazed at the similarities between the two. Great update and can't wait to see your new series. :)

Dani, you say you're getting excited for the return of Time Team? I've been on the edge of my seat since I first heard you were coming back!! I can't wait. It'll be interesting to see how the advances in technology will expose the sites now compared to the very first episodes back in the 90's.

These are all fantastic finds. I was in Pompeii last week and it's magical, so much history. I saw they were still digging as we were leaving and was told they'd be digging for a long time. The foot prints were so much like the old Time Team episode and in the US, to cool. I can't wait for the new episods, cause I've watched all of the old ones a minimum of 3 times each.

Thank you. These are amazing finds! Fossilized footprints make such a unique connection between modern people and the past. Sometimes it's difficult to see the people behind a flint or a post-hole, but a footprint is so personal.

Great. Thank you. Couple questions: 1) why no images of the chariot from Pompeii? 2) I would have thought that the earliest known cave painting in Australia would have been much older than 17,000. Modern humans have been in Australia, I think, for at least 50,000 years. Thanks again for an excellent presentation.

I have seen some of the Aboriginal artworks in that area of the Kimberley and have heard about the wasp nest dating. Without doubt the art in the Kimberley area covers a vast period of time and dating has been controversial however it has been suggested that some of the very early crude animal images are up to 40,000 years old. I have also seen images there of Thylacine (Tasmanian Tigers) which are believed to have been extinct on mainland Australia 40,000 ~ 45,000 years ago. The Gwion Gwion art previously known as Bradshaw art is believed to have first began as early as 26,500 year ago. The most recent of the art may be only 2000 year old.

I think it's the story and the narrator's style which make it *more* captivating, that's was the magic ingredient that Tony brought... He brought the whole excavation to life. All the best and I hope the narrative journey is as captivating as it was before.

Not forgetting the Roman Lantern which was found during a metal detecting rally at Glemsford in Suffolk, and which is on display at Ipswich museum. Oh how I miss the PAS conferences at the BM.

It was believed that Australia was isolated but there is Aboriginal lore and artifacts that proved that the Kimberley area of Northern Australia often traded with fishermen from Indonesia. Who knows how far back this trading went but it is interesting to note the similarity between the rock art styles of the Australian and Indonesian discoveries. Of course, it's important to remember that millennia ago there were no countries, just different tribes.

One of the coolest finds for me was the oldest best preserved ski, found on a glacier in Norway. Seriously, check it out. Of these, the White Sands footprints are so evocative much like the time teams footprint episode.

It might also be interesting to note that the discovery of the footprints in New Mexico is pushing back the date of the arrival of humans. Until not too long ago, it was thought humans weren't on the Americas until 16000 years ago, but these footprints are proving otherwise.

The early date is remarkable although there have been other discoveries in south America hinting at an early settlement of the continent. Despite this I notice there is still some resistance from some in the archaeological community in the U.S. who seem to have an almost cult like devotion to the Clovis first hypothesis.

Well, it is quite a big change, and extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Tests can be contaminated, stratigraphy misinterpreted, etc., so there can be reason to be cautious. Having said that, it is exciting to slowly see that paradigm shift, and I'd love to see how that impacts the view of how humans came to the Americas!

@@actua99 While I like Sagan’s “extraordinary claims…” quote, (which is based on other people’s work) I do not find what the archeologists are saying about the foot prints in New Mexico to be all that much of an extraordinary claim. It’s just a new line of evidence that pushes the frontier of what we know and more data is needed. They are doing the appropriate science with the appropriate scientist using the appropriate methodology and appropriate equipment. Now if they said that the foot prints are proof of Noah’s flood caused by a temperamental deity trying to cover up his mistakes, are only 4,500 years old, they are of Ham and his child and that the ark settled in New Mexico, well then…that’s an extraordinary claim! (And fundamentalist Christians are already out to disprove the findings).

I believe it's important for us to realize even though the finds date back to Roman times and far beyond, we are not that far removed from our human ancestors in instinct and sophistication. Sadly, events in the Ukraine demonstrate our existing prehistoric roots.

The Aussie rock art dating gives us a true indication of the settlement of the land. The 46.000 year claim is about spot on.

17,000 for the Australian art, 46,000 for the Indonesian art. It makes sense to me. Both pig and kangaroo are good sources of food. Pleased they and the footprints 👣 survived to indicate humans have been here making their mark for some time.
