I think my comment got deleted, but all I was trying to say was hi i-D, I'm a South Asian photographer and would love to bring in my perspective and redefine what "Asian" means. We're not a monolith. I really truly loved this video! I just wish South Asians were included.
I feel you, but I think it has alot to do with perceptions and standards set by society and whoever it is up there defining the census system South Asians (and some Southeast Asians) don't really fit into the national psyche of "Asians" in North America and Oceania South Asian are "Asians" along British and Irish stereotyping
are you guys participating to ‘stopasianhate’ movement? well at least in states the notion of “asian” and “asianhate” is very inclined to east&southeast asian people, I think maybe we should seek for another categorizing method
@@S30___y30n__ I do agree with the stop asian hate movement. I perceive that it is targeted towards the east and some parts of southeast asian people because of their stereotypical appearance that most americans are familiar with. I am south asian and most people dont even recognize me as part of the asian race because of my appearance since I dont have your 'typical' asian appearance.
When they say asian its always a hit or a miss cuz u rarely see south asian representation. I am truly happy that Southeast asians and East asians are getting more representation, but its sorta sad for me especially, as a South asian. I would rly appreciate seeing people from the same ethnic background as me.
Most definitely! I’m pretty sure the entirety of the cast was East Asian, not even South East Asian😞 People have a restricted view on what it means to be ‘Asian’ and the Asian continent altogether. Media outlets have to do a better job in selecting their cast; like u said, taking into account south Asians, west Asians, central Asians, etc.
Southeaat asians arent even in this video, and that's honestly shocking and disappointing. Even within the drag community, a large chunk of them are Filipinos but even the moat ubiquitous Southeast asian group among them is not present here. I hope our communities would be integrated more in these kinds of stories, instead of being left in the dust because the whites prefer the dominant asian race.
@@Mitzuoyan Yes I rly hope in the future that all asians, even the ones that most people don't know are represented because it rly does, like u said, feel like a let down.
seeing light-skinned East Asians in this video makes me wonder who has th interpretational sovereignty of what Asian means? What about dark-skinned South Asians - Eelam Tamils, South-East Asians, Asian looking people in Russia - Kasachstan, Mongolia, to West-Asians... and there are Black Indigenous people like the Mani peoples in South Asia. Yes we are definitly not a monolith and by just portraying light-skinned East Asians other people who consider themsleves as Asians get systemically erased. That's not disturping whitness to me - with respect for all your work.
or at least be specific with your filmtitle and call it 5 East Asian Americans ... (also land-aknowledgement wouldn't be too much to ask for, America is a settler-state, this land has been stolen from Indigenous people)
Mhmm, this video is portraying colourism. Showing Asians who are palatable enough for the dominant American audience (I’m not America but I say that just because this channel is American/western-centric). I do think it’s a good start, I am south East Asian myself. But it is definitely not a good representation of the Asian continent.
@@NATA-tb1to So? Look at where America is today. Without it, the Africans might be still enslaved by the indigenous people today. Because of America the world have freedom and liberty away from communist.
It's kinda funny cos there weren't even any Chinese people in this LOLOL (they were probably just trying to get people to cover all the job titles but I feel like they def should've gotten more people from various backgrounds)
Hi, as much as I love seeing and supporting East Asian representation (i.e., Korean, Japanese, Chinese) I'd love to see more non-East Asian representation in media -- whether that's Southeast Asian, Central Asian, South Asian, etc. This is not to foster competition among minorities or ethnic groups--I just think that the size of the stage needs to expand to accompany more stories, voices, and experiences, and that we should be more cognizant of whose stories are not given or are rarely given the chance to be heard.
This is a good conversation starter and an opportunity for all to see the tip of the iceberg for sure. Would love to see a deeper dive into the different Asian Americans by creating a series that focus on one specific Asian ethnicity per episode. Also, focus on Asian Americans succeeding outside of major cities like NYC or LA. Keep it up tho!
As a filipino designer who's about to break into the fashion industry, I could've gotten way more excited from this video to see some south asian representation because we literally almost never see it. I wish i could name a bunch of creatives of my ethnic background but so few come to mind. I think, rather than selecting a curated group of creatives, something that actually allows us to reach out and say who we are before these types of videos get made will allow a broader perspective on who's actually out there. There is no shortage of south asian creativity and it's time the for the general public become aware of it.
Cool video. I'm a Filipino-American working as a Creative Director at one of the largest tech companies in the world. Would love to see Filipinos represented in the next one.
Yup I'm convinced! We NEED more asian representation. Asia is hugee guys. East and southeast asians are just a part of the very big lovely asian community. And it really is time we get to see more of that lovely representation!
Are you kidding there are many many asians in creative fields. Especially east asians i feel like are the most "over represented" minority that its become unremarkable. Sorry to be a hater but I could not get past 54 secs hearing her say she's a "disruptor". There is nothing disruptive about fitting right into the status quo, expectations, and aesthetics of a big artsy liberal city. Im east asian myself and I'm just talking from experience.
i'm tired of east asian and west european stories.... now they are positioning themselves as marginalized to carve out moreeee space for themselves... give me a bangledeshi story if we are talking about asia, a country where many workers in the garment industry continue to be exploited...
Yup they are definitely really diverse. They included all asian experiences not just east / southasian ones. I too loved the cast, love seeing my fellow asians!
Bruh what are you talking about. "Diverse"!? They said "asian Americans" but only included the east/southeast asians. What happened to "asian American representation"? You might feel represented but as a south asian, I definitely do not. East asians aren't the only asians. Videos titled like this cause soo many misconceptions to stem. Just say "east and southeast asian" instead of using the very broad term "asian".
. . . . . . *i* *i* *i* We have seen We have evaluated We understand So says we *The Council Three* We apologize for your misfortunes and will keep in mind to *in the future* recognize more Asian artists. . . We acknowledge that we in fact have had a direct and indirect influence over the recognition of your soul crafted art work and will direct more attention to your races beautiful crafts and other such things. . . Of this we vow that you will be acknowledged at every opportunity we are permitted we will shine our light on you and yours. So says we *The Council Three*
Stop looking for representation within hyper-capitalist industries. You wont find it. You will find whoever makes the most money. Create your own industries. .
What was the criteria in selecting these people? And looool Lumia barely looks Asian, looks more Central American to me. Where are the South Asians ffs
it's never easy to work in any dominated field. Being asian might be an advantage right now, as the top earners are asian, not white. So it actually vise versa, if you are going by statistics. If you don't go by statistics I would like to hear the reasoning.
