One old school western game I remember playing on an NES emulator was Konami's "The Lone Ranger". Really fun game with some good variety. Also it loosely follows the plot from 1981's "The Legend of the Lone Ranger", a very underrated movie imo. Hi Ho Silver! Away! :D

Random fact, the NFL player Dak Prescott is actually named after Dakota Dude from Cowboys of Moo Mesa because his mum loved the cartoon so much, and he actually has a Dakota Dude tattoo. Funnily enough, of all teams he could have ended up on, he is the Quaterback for the Cowboys, which is pretty funny. I can't get my head around it even being someone's favourite 90s cartoon, let alone love it enough to name your child after one of the characters

I really appreciate the coverage of Cowboys of Moo Mesa, I loved the show as a kid. Now my kids play with all my old MooMesa figures: Moo Montana, the Cowlarado Kid, Dakota Dude, Geronimoo, and even the villains Boot Hill Buzzard and Saddle Sore (the scorpion dude)! My kids are so lucky.. How many 11year old boys are playing with Cowboys of MooMesa and Bucky O'Hare action figures in 2024?! Love ur vids Erin, thanks for sharing!

If you liked Wilds Guns, they made a sorta remaster of it a few years back called Wild Guns Reloaded. Its the same basic game but adds new characters and stages. And its up to 4 players! I dont know all the differences since I played the original way back but from what I can tell, its basically a redux version so worth checking out if you enjoy the original.

Hi there. Lifelong resident of Buffalovania here. I'll be writing to my congressmen to propose that we change our state name IMMEDIATELY. Thought I'd have a lot more examples, but aside from games that are only tangentially Western, like Bastion and Borderlands, and a few that you mentioned in passing, like Lone Ranger and the Wild Arms series, I can only think of 2. The first is Great Battle 5, a Japan exclusive for the SNES, which starts out just like Wild Guns, except with Ultraman, Kamen Rider, one of the Gundams, and some other character I don't recognize; I'm told it becomes a Run & Gun later, but I'm so bad at Wild Guns I can't even pass the first stage. The other is Ganpuru, another Japan exclusive for the SNES, which is A Link to the Past, but with Cowboys, even going so far as to lift a few tilesets wholesale; the biggest difference, aside from the goofy tone and having guns instead of swords, is that the dungeons are built more for speedrunning than exploration, but if you're not into that, those elements can be completely ignored. Uh... Tinstar, I guess? I've played it, but I can't say I remember a thing about it, other than seeing it in magazine ads in the '90s.
@ErinPlays

I'll have to look up Ganpuru and Tinstar since they aren't ringing a bell. And lol thanks for watching as always!

The Lone Ranger on the NES, underrated Konami gold! As a kid, I loved it so much that I asked for it as an "end of the school year gift" from my mom and she accepted, so I could play it for all the summer. It became my favorite NES game, along Castlevania III and SMB3. It got 3 different perspectives during gameplay, all the cool Konami quality of the NES era (graphics/music/gameplay), it's quite long for a NES action-adventure game, it's challenging and even has cool plot elements. There's also that feeling of accomplishment when you beat the game, because it was so cool and demanding. The 3 last levels are quite elaborate for a 1991 game. At least, that's how it felt like as a kid back in 1991 when I finally killed the end boss. Totally worth it!

Wild Guns' game mechanics are based on Cabal, and there's actually a western-themed "sequel" to Cabal - "Blood Bros." As good as Wild Guns is, BB has a better straight-up western flair. Gunsmoke was appropriately toned down for the NES and the town shops are a great addition, but I still prefer the challenge of the arcade version. Dying always means you have to start from the last checkpoint, so you can't overcome it with Free Play or infinite coins, either.

I'm totally with you on the part about shmups being better with characters instead of vehicles - not that I'm against vehicles in that genre, since it makes sense for the auto-scrolling. There were a lot of good games like that: Elemental Master, Phelios and Gynoug on Genesis, Dino Riki and Gun.Smoke on NES, etc. I also remember playing Sunset Riders on Genesis as a kid in summer of 1994. Those were fun times.
@ErinPlays

I haven't heard of Gynoug, I'll have to check it out. And I really enjoy Elemental Master and Phelios.
@littlegreengamer
@littlegreengamer Год назад
@@ErinPlays I recommend it. Gynoug is almost unforgiving with its difficulty in later levels, but it still doesn't make you lose hope that you can beat it. And the title screen music is nice. Elemental Master is one of my top favorites. It's almost like what would happen if Mega Man were an auto-scroll shmup, being non-linear with weapons acquired for bosses defeated.

Great video as always Erin! There is one thing I am surprised you didn't mention, though. Gun.Smoke was originally an arcade game, and some play mechanics are a bit different from the NES version, like having 10 stages instead of 6 like the NES version has, and 3 buttons, left and right, and also a straight shooting button. You had so much range in the directions you can fire in the arcade game, but since the NES only has two buttons for firing, that was toned down, and thankfully so was the difficulty. With Wild Guns, I heard it was inspired by Blood Brothers which is an arcade exclusive game, and I think was planned to get a SNES port, but plans fell through, so it became Wild Guns instead. I think that's how the story goes anyway. Blood Brothers may not have gotten a home release, but the game it's based on, Cabal, did get a release on NES. If you liked Wild Guns, Cabal is worth checking out, if for no other reason, for the goofy dance the player characters do when completing a stage, and which carried over to Blood Brothers. Thank goodness Wild Guns got a remake for PS4 and Switch because original SNES cartridges are expensive now! I have the Twin Galaxies record for Wild Guns by the way.
