True, I just heard a recording of myself yesterday and I was so bummed. I notice I speak faster than I realized and I tended to you words such as UMMM, YOU KNOW, with occasional stutters.
I am a native speaker of American english, but I am working on learning another language. I found all your comments/tips to be beneficial no matter which direction the language learning goes. I have to applaud your tip of not speaking too quickly. I'm a Texan. Southerners do not speak quickly. Often when conversing on the phone with people of other regions of the US, they talk so fast, and I'm not sure what they are saying. I sometime ask them to slow down. I cannot listen that fast. LOL
I love the way how she communicates her ideas, and her pronunciation is flawless and really easy to understand, definitely the kind of person you need when you're learning

Yes.. And actually I found alot of people like her but those people are all teachers of various subjects and they work on there pronouncation cuz they know they are communicating with the world....
One thing that I love to do is not just imitate one person, but many. So we can filter the mistakes or bad habits and then get rid of them. It's not easy sometimes, but overall it works. Like watching the same words being spoken by a lot of different people.

HAHAH I have a story about one of those topics as well; when i started learning English I was trying to get some inspirations, so I thought it would be a great ideia to try to imitate girls who were talking about some type of content that I personally enjoy, like make up for example, and then, i dont know if you guys know but, a lot of these girls speak in a very catchy and kind of "valley girl way" and I started to pick up the fillers and their way to communicate. I just realized it when I recorded myself speaking in English and I saw with my own eyes (and ears haha) that I was speaking in such boring and fake way, and that's not who I am in my native language, which is Portuguese. Now I always pay attention about how I'm speaking, and the message I want to transmit to others.
haha I love this story!!! I'm guilty of this too... I have old videos of me speaking Spanish where I was trying way too hard to sound like someone I wasn't. Sometimes it's just about relaxing and enjoying the communication... not sounding exactly like someone else.
This is the first video I watch from you and I was so impressed by the way you speak and communicate everything so fluently. I liked it inmediately but then when I saw the bloopers I couldn't avoid subscribing. Wow that makes me feel like it's okay to make mistakes when you are speaking! This is the first time I'm watching this channel. A great video with many valuable tips, and they all deal with awareness, in some way. Probably the one I appreciate most, beyond the many communication tips about conveying our messages the most effective way, is the invitation to stay true to ourselves, to find the effective and appropriate ways to express who whe are, not to express somebody we are not. Loves this video, thank you! I was talking about this with my dad, why speaking fast in English if we don't talk fast in our native language. The important thing speaking correctly and make our message understood.
You are an exceptional teacher! You are telling ESL students what other teachers do not. A few more points: 6. Do not copy the nasal, suppressed, or guttural voice. It is not important. 7. Do not learn to speak English from movies, normal people do not talk like that. 8. At your profession/work, stay with formal English as much as possible. 9. Do not pick up one particular local accent; you may have to move elsewhere or work with people from many countries 10. DO NOT ridicule someone for not speaking English as well as you do; he/she may be much better than you in something more important in life. My anecdote: I learned German by repeating the news on TV. I got my first job just because of my formal German. The natives were really impressed.
Great video! Thank you... I just wanted to explain the psychological aspect of this issues. Learning a second language requires the person to form another personality. When you start to learn another language, your personality splits; so it is important to watch the development of the new one very carefully. At first, your new personality is so raw and flexible that it can be easily distorted by environment. The reason behind this is the fact that you can't really think formally in that language, and therefore you act like a 4 years old kid who imitates everything he/she hears in the environment. Once you are able to think about abstract ideas in that language, you will be able to control this process consciously and to filter inappropriate ideas. If you wanna think about it in your first language, you must do it actively, because it won't happen automatically. As I mentioned earlier, they are two different persons; I mean, literally! p.s. it doesn't mean that you have to form your new personality in accordance with the previous one. because the previous one is not the main one. the main personality doesn't speak. you are your main personality, not what you learned in your childhood. actually, learning a new language can help you to find yourself. your true self.
@@aleksandrnote2525 I don't remember how exactly I came up with this piece of philosophy. It has something in it. My personality has been changed over time. Radical change. So I can't remember the details. The main point is to find that one, not to ask others about that one. Because nobody can guide you better than yourself. I can say the real "you" doesn't speak (yet). It just is there. It is the very being that you are. It is a state of being, not doing. In fact, being and doing are not two separate things. The real you is where the duality breaks down. I don't know if I'm clearing my point. I am on a path, and obviously I don't know anything about it. I'm just trying to understand. So take my words with a grain of salt.
@@ansari1375 Interesting again! Being is doing, thinking and feeling to me, there is no being without these three things, is there? And I suppose, thinking is possible without a language, because there is always a real self present, even when one has not yet learned a language. But you are right probably in a sence - one forms somewhat another self while mastering a language, including the native one. Thank you for reply.
Thanks for the tips! Sometimes when I'm talking to someone in English, I tend to speed up my speech because I feel nervous and shy, and I end up getting lost in my words... but I'll try to slow down! By the way, you should start a podcast giving tips like that. It'd be really worth it!

What I know about speaking english isn’t about speaking fast it is the intonation the key since English’s intonation is completely different from other languages like Spanish, French etc so that could be the reason we say native English speakers speak fast but in reality their intonation is different from us so that we perceive like super fast speaking. That’s what I have learned since I start studying English two years ago
She really values communication people should definitely go with. This is a mantra of being confident of speaking, which really encourages me to do that.

I realized I've made exactly the same mistakes you've listed.. It's really hard to find a great native coach in here S.Korea thus I rather prefer to see various movies and news a lot. I had this video in my recommended and thank you for that. 💙 I speak softly, almost in every sentence I use fillers and tone of it is like rollercoaster. I will try to practice and get better. Reading out loud some text helps me a lot but get rid of using fillers will take some time. :)

Wow . You spoke very clearly and accurately. I am not a native speaker of English and I could follow your speech word by word. Unfortunately other native speakers don't speak like this specifically @Australia. They use a lot of idioms which make it hard to follow for not native speakers.

One common misconception that most English language learners have is they tend to believe that speed equals fluency.Fluency has to do with using the language in a smooth and easy way and not necessarily speakibg quickly.
Me: having accent, speaking too fast like a machine gun, mumbling, speaking too soft due to insecurity. Other people: what alien language is this dude speaking?

This is the best 20mins of speaking lession I had. Not only from language skill but also communication and presentation perspective. Very good advices and practical. Unfortunately I had all these bad habits. But now I know i have them and I can practice to minimise them.

Thank you for sharing such useful advices. I've started on an international university program recently and that was long time ago I used the english language. Those tips are very very helpful! I use the "you knows" and "likes" almost all the time. I feel that I speak too quick as well, and also the fact that I often try to imitate other people... that's because I am nervous and insecure about myself... I speak two languages fluently (spanish and swedish). Thank you so much for sharing those tips!
From my observation, I noticed that most of the modern English books are written in a very complex, abstruse language. They are very hard to read, at least not for a native speaker. Recently, I read the memories of O.J Simson "I Did it: Confessions of the Killer". I was amazed at how simple and easy his style was. I really enjoyed his writing. Well, maybe it was not he who wrote the book but it sounded like him. It was strange but I liked it. I would like to write like that.

Stefanie is spot on, I can't agree more with what she says. A language is really just a tool for communication. It is therefore advisable that languages are kept as plain and simple as possible. But this practically does not happen to languages around the world. People such as poets, literature laureates, authors, playwrights and linguists like to write flowery works using bombastic words which we have never seen in our lifetime. Even reporters tend to write news using rarely used words when there are more commonly used words with the same meanings. Languages have been used as a tool to impress rather than to communicate. Thus languages have lost their fundamental function as the tool for communication. Unfortunately.
"Like" is the best. But you're right...we gotta watch ourselfs, especially cursing.If you curse that should be a big deal, not a filler. Our words suppose to mean smth, but if we continue do this we'd get to the point where every word is a filler and nothing makes sense.

True, it's easier to curse in a foreign language because those words don't have an emotional imprint and they don't carry the same weight they would if you said them in your native language.
I love this! I know one of the most famous RU-vidrs in Morocco who pretends to be good in English, and keeps repeating "What the f***" as if he's saying something worth saying!
