I've got to say, although I've got very little experience with pinhole cameras, the simplicity of the process combined with the dream-like results has got me hooked!
I can't wait to experiment some more, and maybe even do some printing in the darkroom with some of my shots!
For a more in-depth article on my 5 tips for pinhole photography, as well as an overview of the Dora Goodman Scura pinhole cameras, head on over to the link below to check out the article I wrote for their website:

I think the best tip is "if you think you're close enough, get closer"

So true! It's really hard to judge how much your subject will fill the frame (or not!), so get in as close as you can!

Nice video, Jess. I recently got my first pinhole camera so I'm doing a lot of experimenting. My first thoughts are that if you're taking a view of something you definitely need something in the foreground to really make use of the amazing depth of field and give a dramatic composition.

These images look so sharp for pinhole photos! I do not have much experience with pinhole photography but these tips surely made me curious to try :)

They are definitely the sharpest pinhole photos I have ever made! I do have another pinhole camera that I sometimes shoot with, and the images do come out relatively sharp, but nothing like this! The fact that the Scura has a curved back probably has a lot to do with the sharpness, and it also reduces distortion, which is great!

Great tips! Been looking at the Scura cameras for awhile now. Any thoughts on the 6x6 vs the 135 version?
@JessHobbs
@JessHobbs 2 года назад
I only have the 6x6 version, for some reason I'm more attracted to a square pinhole image, but I do have my eye on the 35mm as a possible future purchase! I like that the 35mm version is panoramic, so it gives a whole other change in perspective! Thanks for watching!
@Frisenette
@Frisenette 2 года назад
Word of warning. Resolution drops a lot with smaller formats. That might be what you want. But might come as a surprise to some. The finest features size attainable is determined by the size of the pinhole regardless of format. Smaller pinholes don’t work because of diffraction. Medium format occupies a nice Goldilocks zone between resolution, lightfalloff at the edges, cost of material and cumbersomeness.
@Chrizzowski
@Chrizzowski 2 года назад
@@Frisenette Thanks for that. Makes sense. I'll probably use it mostly for landscape so the extra detail is always appreciated. Panorama 135 could be neat too but getting the horizon level without a viewfinder would be interesting I'm sure. Besides, can always crop the 6x6.

I have only just tried pinhole photography. I got a pinhole body cap for my Nikon cameras. So far every image is soft. Very soft. No sharpness at all. I have used it on all my Nikon film cameras and my Z7 with the FTZ adapter. Is there maybe something wrong with the pinhole cap. I'd hate to think that I need to get a dedicated pinhole camera to see acceptable results.
@JessHobbs
@JessHobbs 2 года назад
I've only ever shot pinhole images through dedicated pinhole cameras, so I really can't say if it's the camera or the pinhole itself. I do know that if the pinhole isn't laser drilled, or if any dust or dirt gets in, it can bring down the quality of the images, so maybe check to make sure the cap is good. Thanks for watching!
@petergoodrum1607
@petergoodrum1607 2 года назад
Check the, quality of the pinhole. I make my own with precision drills in hard temper pie dish foil polished after to remove burrs, thin out the foil and to get a really fine edged hole. Also for any given focal length there is an optimum size hole that gives sharp focus eg 100 focal length a 0.4mm might fall into that optimal category and say a 50mm focal length will be a 0.2 mm. These are only examples to illustrate my point others may have their own ideas on what works
@bgwhitney
@bgwhitney Год назад
My first few pinhole images were not sharp. I had my camera on a lightweight aluminum tripod so camera shake on a long exposure was the likely culprit as the photos are improving! I really need a sturdy tripod and need to be careful when tripping the shutter!
