Tom is a wise guy from Jersey. He’s a made man, I wouldn’t mess with him too much or you might end up in the freezer
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney
Never trust a guy from Jersey with a commercial freezer in his garage!😬

But then Alex could help Tom with cold weather cord flex testing…

The freezer is a waste of electricity. We all know that everyone from Jersey dumps their bodies in the Meadowlands swamps
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney
@The Lone Wrangler Not so much anymore. That was a good place in the 70s, but there's been too much development in the area since then...

Love Tom's reviews. Just be aware that many electric companies will give rebates for the smart chargers which can cut the price in half when signing up for time of use plans.

For the longest time now - over 6 months - the $200 "corded mobile connector" has been out of stock at the Tesla online shop. I finally realized it is available there as the $230 "mobile connector", which includes two adapters, the NEMA 5-15 for up to 125 volts and the NEMA 4-50 for up to 240 volts, and a storage bag. I had been waiting for the $200 connector. I finally decided it may be discontinued for the moment. The 2 adapters are for Tesla chargers.

I own a Tesla and have an Emporia! Emporia for the win! Got mine just over a year ago and have been using it to charge my MYP (that I took delivery a year ago today). As Tom said the whole Emporia lineup is really nice system to monitor your whole house usage. You can see your power usage from your EV charger, and up to 16 circuits by second, minute, day, week, month and year. And for fellow data nerds, you can export the data to drill down even more. I also like their WIFI plugs that also integrate with their power monitoring ecosystem.

Tom mentioned the two most common plugs for the Tesla, mobile connector that used to be included with their cars but didn’t mention that you can order any of several plugs and the mobile connector will adjust the amps to be appropriate for the plug that’s connected.

Love our TESLA Mobile Charger. Easily keeps BOTH of our TESLAs charged. We even have it throttled from 32A down to 24A, and it’s still plenty for our typical once a week overnight charge. In three years, it has never failed us. Beautifully simple and cost-efficient solution. Even has the North American Charging Standard connector built right in, so zero clumsy adapters! Plugs directly into the standard NEMA 6-50 outlet on a 40A circuit (we didn’t fall for the NEMA 14-50 scam since this outlet is solely used for EV charging).

UL listed, not just ul-listed parts, is a good idea for safety and insurance. I got the basic electrify America EVSE (discontinued) Easy control of charge rate is good ($) you should only charge as fast as you need to. Charge monitoring is nice if you don't have an app on your car that shows it. Clever use of an NJ corpse freezer!

If you have a Tesla and a Mach E which would you recommend the Tesla $230 charger and an adapter for the Mach E which is about $160 or should i get the Emporia and already have the Tesla adapter to j1772 Thanks

I know the cost may have eliminated it, but I am surprised the ChargePoint Home Flex didn’t make this list.
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney
As we mentioned, these are the best chargers for under $500. The CP Home Flex costs considerably more.

I really appreciate your video. I just ordered a Tesla 3 RWD and I don’t really know which charger to buy do you recommended me to order the wall and/or the mobile charger? I still will have to get an electrician either to get the 240V connection or to wire the wall connector I don’t do many long trips so the car will mainly be more for many short trips in town THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR VIDEOS I just subscribed to your channel
@JohnGeorgeBauerBuis
@JohnGeorgeBauerBuis Год назад
It sounds like the Wall Connector will be just fine for you. The Mobile Connector would probably be fine as well, as long as you have a shelf to rest it on so that it is not hanging from the outlet.

Regarding that Tesla charger, at the 9 minute mark: (it look's like a tiny generator) would that unit be capable of providing enough range on my 2016 Nissan Leaf SV if I ever ran out of battery and was say just 25 miles away from the nearest DC Level 3 quick charge? if it could, how long would it take the charge the leaf to go another 25 miles I live in Las Vegas and I'm vey worried how outside heat from June to September could leave me stranded, but these used cars are approaching the the 8K to 10K price with low miles now, so it's too tempting to not take a deep look and see if the pro's out way the risk,
@2cartalkers

Wow, all chargers should be safety certified, where are the Feds on this issue? What about NSF or UL certification?

Different topic, but…I am a bit baffled by the impact of low profile tires on EVs. It is generally accepted that low profile tires rob EVs of range by about 10-15%. This is due to the stickiness of the tires adding rolling resistance. That makes sense, but the same tires seem to improve fuel economy in ICE cars due to the same characteristics. How can that be? I must be missing something…right?
@netgnostic1627
@netgnostic1627 Год назад
Yes, that one has been bugging me too. Low-profile sidewalls flex less, which should cause less friction. I should look for a Mythbusters-type video where various EV tire & wheel combinations are tested under controlled conditions, with a tire engineer as an advisor to explain the theories behind it all, and to review and comment on the test results. Aerodynamics of the wheel play a large part in EV efficiency too, so careful attention would have to be paid to the wheel covers, so they don't skew the results. Maybe Alex could coordinate something like that!

My car has an onboard smart charger, why would I need an external charger when I have a simple level 2 cable?
@JohnGeorgeBauerBuis
@JohnGeorgeBauerBuis Год назад
It mostly matters if you need higher power or more adapters. If you have something that meets your needs, no reason to replace it unless it breaks, otherwise causes problems, or adds a new feature not included in your existing equipment.

Yes. I use a Blink at home with the J1772 adapter that came included with the Tesla. Works just fine. And that’s on an OLD charger (purchased 2012). I’m here looking for a replacement simply because it’s absolutely monstrous and I want to use my garage’s wall space for other things.

USA is the country with the most cars in the world. Almost 300 million cars! Obviously charging all those cars will not be possible for everybody at anytime, any day. Don’t forget that there is only 3 hours frame between NY an LA. Putting our eggs in one basket is asking for trouble. We need more alternatives to keep our petrol cars running with less polluants. Going all EV cannot be the only solution.
@dfgriggs
@dfgriggs Год назад
Putting our eggs in the fossil-fuel basket causes tremendous harm. You say that obviously these cars can't charge at the same time, but I would encourage you to research the topic. Car charging is one of the most manageable of electric loads. When was the last time we fretted about all turning on our electric stoves at the same time? It could be a problem, but in practice it is not. Car owners will be able to opt into demand-response such that all they care about is having the car fully charged when they need it.
@gabe415
@gabe415 Год назад
@@dfgriggs i guess we will have to wait 2040 when all drivers have their EV. For now every theories are good! Have a good day!
@jamesvandamme7786
@jamesvandamme7786 Год назад
Just about everybody will charge at night, with cheap rates, when demand is low. Also, seldom will everybody will charge all night, every night. This actually helps balance out the load on the grid. It will take many years for everybody to get an EV, especially the 50% of people with no driveway or garage. Thanks for worrying, but the engineers have this figured out. Don't forget that pumping, refining, and distributing gasoline now takes a lot of energy, which we will save in the future.

Hi Alex, the problem is that you are buying the electric cars in the wrong time. And That’s why you hate Tesla and VW. and you might hate more car companies if you continue to buy the cars in the wrong time
@EforElectric

That's a very interesting and mainly true point. I mean I did give Tesla until 2018 which is 5 years. I also gave Volkswagen 2 years to ratify some very simple mistakes. So there is that

This whole idea of charging your car is a disaster waiting to happen on many fronts, folks. To do it right you'll want a 240 volt circuit capable of 60 amps. Most homes are 100 amp service. As these vehicles get more popular can you imaging the house fires we're going to see by do it yourselfers wiring these up. We're not building more nuclear power plants -can you imagine the overloads we're going to see on the power grid. I'd much rather have an electric vehicle that's a hybrid capable of charging itself or stick with liquid fuel vehicles.
