I have been living in Davao for 3 years. A very friendly nice city with a couple of world class hospitals to care for senior ExPats. The cost of living is much lower than Manila combined with a low crime rate. Great malls. As mentioned in the video, Samal Island is close for a day trip or a weekend at The Paradise Island Resort.

I am glad you mentioned Davao. My asawa and I have a condo and other property there. Davao is safer than Calgary in western Canada where we are now. Next year we will be moving back to Davao permanently so my wife can be there to run a nearby beach resort she owns. As for the traffic, it is a lot better than the insanity that one encounters on the streets in Manila. In my humble opinion, Davao is the place to be.

Thanks Gio for choosing CDO as the number one best retirement city in the Philippines. It has all the best amenities every retiree is looking for just like Cebu and Davao but is less traffic and is less expensive. It is also strategically located a distance away from Cebu, Bohol, and Davao so traveling within these areas is very easy and accessible. CDO has also lots of things to do from nightlife to nature adventure that's why it's also called the "Adventure Capital of the Philippines." Plus the friendliness of the people being known as the city of golden friendship. The uptown area specifically is best for expats to reside overlooking Macajalar Bay. It is now growing and booming and will become the 4th metropolitan area in the country by 2025.

I was in CDO for a week last September. I really like the city. I may retire there as my girlfriend lives in nearby Jasaan. I stayed at the Centrio Tower Condos next to Centrio mall. Centrio mall, SM mall and the older Gaisano mall share 1 street intersection. I also met a girl at SM Uptown. The people are very friendly. I could easily have 5 beautiful girlfriends there if I was so inclined, and I’m old and ugly. I also like Davao and Dipolog in Mindanao. I was never bored in these places.
@jefflynch3946
@jefflynch3946 3 года назад
I have been going to CDO for 16 years. My wife is from there, so I have seen it grow and have invested in three condos downtown by Ayala Mall and one to live in across the street from SM Mall uptown; as well as a business (if buying gas or diesel in Mindanao, look for my stations VELOX ENERGY logo is a red panther). I like the availability of Western amenities and am not limited to rural living because of a monthly income of under $2,000, which appears to be the commonality of expats living in places like Valencia outside Dumagete. If you are limited on funds, places like that are nice. However, I like a good steak (from Australia) or a Turkish coffee, a Costco type store and even a coffee and Dunkin Donut now and then. Wherever you end up in the Philippines you will find wonderful folks. Our ETA for staying permanently is 7/31/24 or sooner if Biden’s clown show makes living in the US unbearable.

Cebu has an international gateway airport, ports where ships sail everywhere in the Philippines, good hospitals, lots of entertainment and nature sites. There are also pockets of western standard places and the mountain and nearby areas are very scenic. But mostly the people are "modern", accepting of differences, speak English and more independent minded than in other places. On the other hand, traffic sucks, the poverty is depressing and you'll marvel at the sheer chaos of the electric wires.
@lorcis1

If I went: Manila, Cebu, Subic are too big and maybe expensive. Dumaguete has comments about 'to hot', Valencia is really wet with rain almost every day during rainy season, Tagaytay sounds expensive and maybe to high elevation (?). I looked for a smaller, off the beaten trail city. Looked North and saw Aparri. ~60K, not as developed but it's growing and the government is putting resources into the area. New mall, etc.

As I have been living in Dumaguete for 30 years, there is something I don't understand about CDO. It is just beside the sea but turns its back to it. No waterfront at all, except for the port but that doesn't count. The waterfront in Dumaguete adds so much to the quality of the city.

Hi Gio, thanks so much for this video. It’s very informative, especially that I'm trying to convince my Caucasian husband to retire there. I was born in Mindanao, and my family immigrated to the USA when I was eleven years old. That was over fifty years ago. I've visited the Philippines twice and once with my husband, and we had a wonderful time. I think I know where Cagayan De Oro and probably will consider visiting there once this pandemic is over and gone for good! Take care and be safe!

For me Cebu is the best choice. There are a lot of shopping malls, international airport, restaurants, beautiful beaches, hospitals, great tourist spots, mountains for hiking, no problem communicating with friendly locals, government offices , schools instructions are in English and Tagalog.

Thanks for the shortlist. Whenever I check places out to retire in the Philippines people always put malls near the top of the list as a reason for retiring there. Coming from the States, I think people are "malled out" here. They have been losing business here in the US for years. Part of the biggest attraction for me coming to the Philippines is the individual personalities of all the independent shops----the kind that were in my home town and surroundings when growing up. They have disappeared and been replaced with big box stores and online shopping. Maybe the malls there are an attraction for the quality of shopping so I might be misjudging them as a reason for wanting to be near them. Your thoughts?

It is true and I agree w Mr. Ron's comments. In addition, it is very hot and humid throughout the year that going inside a mall is a welcome break from your walks and commute under the scorching sun and is cheaper than paying for aircon electric bill at home. It's a past-time called malling, something "chill" to do. You will find many independent non-chain shops from rinky-dink to artisanal, hand-crafted, as well as local mom & pop services (e.g. tailoring/alterations, handwashed laundry, shoe repair, bicycle repair, computer repair, internet cafes, etc).

I cant understand why almost every expat talks about "malls" in PH land like they are some type of cool or great hang out due to restros or department stores or electronics... I dont think the people that rave about malls had enough of "malling" in the 80's and 90's in the USA and the crowds giant parking lots loud noises and buy buy buy mentality of the USA ... if that is the reason for expats to consider a place in PH as a "great" location ..more power to the mallies.. and it is alive and well in "retro" Ph land.. as for me .. tropical beaches ... local food and down to earth friendly locals is what I value about the Philippines.... you dont need to rush off to big polluted crowded cites and malls to find great experiences in the Philippines or friends and locals and nice folks on either the female or male side of life ...if you are a lonely expat in search of companionship :) my top 5 list is the province of Rizal , Subic area, southern Cebu island, northern Cebu island, and the provinces west of CDO ..in no particular order..all low cost clean friendly and safe... :) scratch the polluted cities if you are interested in real PH lifestyle

Hi Gio, sitting here in Butte, MT freezing my tush and breathing the forest fires. Can’t wait for the Philippines to allow tourists back again. You know my personal favorite is Bayawan. I have a story about how tight knit the people in the Philippines are. My brother-in-law has a blog, The Sky Is My Garden, on Facebook. He’s a widower, and met a Filipina, D, from Bayawan, who’s lived in Manila for years, through his blog several years ago. He went to the RP to meet D and is now working on getting D to the US on a fiancée visa. A friend, S, of my girl friend, E, friended my BIL’s fiancé, D, a few months ago. With me so far, ‘cause now comes the close knit part. D got in touch with S to talk about E’s aunt, A. A had recently died in Bayawan. It seems that when A and D were young women they boarded together (lived in the same boarding house) in Bayawan. In the US we talk about six degrees of separation, but in the RP I think it’s more like two degrees. Just something that struck an old man as interesting.

Here in US malls are closing or for sell or they’re talking about turn into apartment.Most people here don’t shop in the mall anymore they mostly shop on line.Groceries and department stores don’t have cashiers anymore we check our own groceries and we order our groceries by app and we just pick it up and if u live in the city they’ll deliver it for u

Hey Gio, a good top 5, The Davao sounds like good place for medical at my age, but Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental uptown seems very interesting, a little bit city and good housing, and within reason to the beaches and islands ? Still hate the fact that I don’t know when the hell I’m gonna get to get over there, if this keeps dragging out I think I’m going to try Isla Providencia and San Andres, or on land on the coast of Colombia. The only thing missing is the no age spread difference pass we Get in the Philippines , and that is hard to ignore :-(

@@GiointhePhilippines glad you like Samal Island. I have land properties there, but unfortunately I fallen out of love of Mindanao. I grew up close to Davao but my husband from New Zealand doesn't like to retire in Davao. He likes Bohol or Cebu. I've been to Cagayan when I was a kid, I'm bit surprised about your descriptions about Cagayan. My husband and I we travelled to Camiguin Island and we don't think we can retire there, the place is very small. My parents originally from Bohol, so every time I visits Philippines I always end up spending more time with my extended family in Bohol. I like Bohol but definitely not around Panglao. I prefer Ubay area. When this pandemic subsided we will definitely visit CDO and Iligan.
