I have my 1994 Giant Cross Nutra that I put some Avid Shortys front and back replaced the Shimano Acera set with a used ultegra 48/31 I picked up for a song at an estate sale. Added a new fork with some drops and a suspension seat post. This bike is heaven holy crap CROMO IS AMAZING! Sure it's a bit heavy but it's so compliant without feeling mushy that with the suspension seat post I almost feel I could take some "real off-road" stuff

@Jose_Hunters_EWF_Remixes
@Jose_Hunters_EWF_Remixes 4 года назад
Mildly interesting. Been touring for 30 years, probably a stronger rider now than ever. Gave up on panniers and expensive gear long ago. Use a trailer and sterilite plastic closed crates, which are water proof, inexpensive, super tough, and easy to replace. A trailer is a super simple device, it's just a plank with two wheels, and so its quality is determined by the quality of those two wheels. Designed and implemented by own hitch because I found most others totally inadequate Expensive gear makes your stuff more attractive to thieves, so you spend your time totally worried when you leave your gear behind for a day trip or short excursion, instead of enjoying life. Of course, it requires one to become a fairly good mechanic, though no one is more mechanically inept than yours truly. But even old dogs eventually learn new tricks Even a aluminum Schwinn has an adequate frame once you start replacing the garbage components as they wear out in the first few months. I bought a $400 retail Schwinn 29er MTB (with disc brakes) 7 years ago, put probably 70K miles on it, bought for $118 on clearance from Target. Gone through at least 7 drivetrains (cogs, chains, chainrings). In fact, the only OEM gear still in use is the fork and front wheel. Stop wasting $ on bicycling jewelry. I'm no hobo, I bought a Cannondale tandem for $2500 in 1990 (that was a lot of $ back then), but then I wised up. So now I watch amused while the tools who ride bikes that cost $7K think of themselves as real bicyclists

Why do people use drop bars for touring instead of loop bars or straight handlebars?
@vincentaurelius2390

Drop bars are essential for speed touring and good for taking on a strong headwind.

I will stick with my Bacchetta Giro A20 touring recumbent because it is geared far better for touring , and at the end of any day regardless of mileage, I am still sitting in a comfortable chair with no pains in body parts like I did for the first 37 years of riding diamond frame bikes ! If you have a problem with peer pressure don't buy a recumbent. Like speed with your comfort , buy a recumbent.

I am not familiar with the Panamerica highway , but there are some nasty ,treacherous roads all over America with individuals driving them with the attitude that they own the road. yeah cycle with a 5500 to 7000 dollar bicycle around the world (2000 dollar ++ on gear , tent, sleeping bag, laptop, camera ect) that must feel good if you sitting with family's in other countries who make a dollar a day. Or your sitting in a little dust village with your bicycle were there is almost no food and the people have almost no money to survive but they help you out for a place to sleep. Then you can stay save and sounds with your 6000 dollar bicycle next to you and tell a cool story how brave you are. LOL But you can always ride for charity while cycling, to balance it out and then you seem te be a very social and concious world adverture cyclist for the people in your country. Enjoy the belt, rohloff and pinion, hydrolic brakes, 29 inch wheels and give all you freedom, trust away, and put your touring adventures in the hands of a couple of people in some companys because it so easy to repair on the road that pretty wise and concious for you to do. Spare parts can be send everywhere on the world LOL next DHL point is maybe 900 km ahead and then you need to wait for your stuff but he thats oke. But hey anyways it won't brake , i never ever heard bad story's about these expiensive bicycles ;-). And besides that there are 6 point on the world that can service your rohloff so you golden all top top notch specialist who know everything from bicycles.LOL And me and some other peopel know that when i wrote this criticle thing there is a big change it will be attacked by the expensive bicycle brand cult, or companys who search the internet to attack and destory everybody who is criticle about their bicycles. 100% Psychological warfare going on and that all for a bicycle. Their must be alot on the line here why do they spend so much time and money on controlling the internet reviews?? Think twice when getting sucked into buying these supersuper expiencive bicycles. What are you really getting in to? What are you joining.... because by buying these bicycles your buying yourself into a relationship with a company and people that you don't know. All because it looks and seems so nice to have. Almost to good to be true. And all these expiensive bicycle brands do the same thing, they all fish in the same pond with the same type of bicycles... and they almost all use the same strategy. So that you know a little bit of that side of the story. enjoy your travels.

@@dennisvanlith sorry that you don't like my comment Dennis. Why that reaction on my post that was 100% honest? You could also post that you appreciated my perspective on buying a bicycle. because I think it is very relevant information for if you looking arround for a bicycle and your planning to ride for years. It is good to keep what i just posted in mind before you pay 5000 dollars right?. good to look at it from different sides right? strange that you think i am a troll. Now i think you are one of the people from the expiensive bicycle cult i was typing about. Cognitive dissonance going on? why aren't you making your own channel? I think there are alot of people who are to afraid to talk negative in public about these expiensive bicycle brands because they are afraid and feel the pressure that is put on them. Like you are doing in a way now you could also be interseted and thankfull for the inside i just gave about bicycles. instead you want to push it away and want it deleted. why do you care so much? And who dares to speak about these brands negatively in public ? Alot of people who had these bicyles and sold felt the pressure that was put on them to conform at the idea and the will of the brand. IT is psychology very relevant when buying a products and also expiensive ones. again sorry that you don't like it. Maybe a idea to study it a bit?? what ever you do good luck with finding your dream bicycle! And hopefully the borders don't stay closed because of coved so we can fly and travel again and meet other kinds souls. God bless you.

For adventure touring bikes, I prefer flat bar bikes so much more than drop bars. But the trend for adventure touring bikes at least here in the US is towards drop bars lately. Even Giant is phasing out the flat bar version of it’s Toughroad here in the states & no longer offer the SLR1 version, only the SLR2. Favoring the drop bar GX versions instead. Of the bikes in this list, my dream touring bike would be the Koga World Traveller S. If budget were no concern, I’d get it with a rohloff gear hub & carbon fiber belt drive. But right now my budget is more in the Giant Toughroad area.
@dennisvanlith
@dennisvanlith 4 года назад
If you really want to take a adventure on a bike that’s build to withstand the elements. Please go to a more higher standard build bike. The Koga Worldtraveller-S, Santos Travelmaster 3+, or Any of the stainless Steel IDWorkx bikes are made like tanks. And are unbelievable indestructible. I’d take one of these bikes on and gravel and off-road adventures, any time. But get ready to pay big. Starting at around €5000

I think the move to disc brakes is a mistake for bikes that will not see offroad service. They are more complex to service and they don't dissipate heat as well as a rim brake bike. Because the fork must be strengthened to accommodate the reverse torque a disc brake creates, more road shock is transferred to the rider. I'll stick with my cantilever brakes as they are super reliable and have never failed me.
@christjoeng
@christjoeng 4 года назад
Thanks for pointing that out. I have a Magura HS11 hydro rim brake and feel under dressed around XT disc brakes, but when I test drive them I feel more comfortable with my rim brake. it has never failed me in 10 years of riding my bike and it hasn't even worn out the rim altough I have been riding it 10k+. it's ultra reliable and has little to no service. I guess, I will stick to rim brakes too.
