The 5 greatest uses of Classical Music...in a Kubrick film! There's even space for honorary mentions...
For the sharp-eared amongst you, I've had to replace much of the original audio, to avoid the video being blocked.

I remember when I first heard The Blue Danube used in 2001 at 12. I didn’t like the film back then, I’m sure many people still don’t. But even myself was in awe of that moment. Today now that I see 2001: A Space Odyssey as one of my favorite films, I recently rewatched it for the first time in theaters, and seeing and hearing that sequence really did tear me up this time. Cinematic heaven is how I would describe it.

For film fans, they know more about the classical music via Kubrick films. Meanwhile, I am the opposite.

The decision to use of Also Strath Balhustra (or however the hell you spell it) was so spot on that it has kind've eternally destroyed the piece's right to exist as a piece of art in its own right.

For the best use of popular music in a Kubrick film, I nominate the instrumental version of "Try a Little Tenderness" in the highly erotic midair refueling scene during the opening credits of Dr Strangelove. Brilliant and hilarious! Also, this aerial ballet is an obvious predecessor to the "Blue Danube" scene in 2001.

Before 2001 virtually no one knew of Zarathustra. Now virtually everyone knows it as the theme from 2001. Nothing in cinematic history has ever merged as have these two unrelated elements.

I love the video and I love your choices, but it still causes me literal physical pain that not a single moment from clockwork orange is in the actual top 5 😂

If Mr. North enjoyed the film... anyone can.

You did not disappoint! The music in "Barry Lyndon" was exquisite and served the narrative (not to mention the carefully composed painterly shots that recall Constable and Gainsborough)! And "2001" as well! I remember that a few years after the movie came out, Eumir Deodato released his jazz-inflected electronic version of "Also Sprach Zarathustra". No doubt brought to public consciousness by the Kubrick film. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RJKsp9_L24Q.html

If you mention Kubrick's 'Barry Lyndon', you might perhaps deign to mention Leonard Rosenman, who was the musical director, an Oscar-winning composer in his own right. HE did the adaptations, not Kubrick! I think that might be apt? 2001's score was a temp-track, put there by the music editor. This was a TEMPORARY score used to guide the actual composer, and in audience previews for editing decisions. The UNUSED actual score was by Alex North, the fabulous American composer, and two complete commercially released recordings exist. Kubrick kept the temp track instead because he felt it worked well. He didn't tell poor Alex who turned up at the premiere to find his score gone. But should Kubrick get the credit for a faceless music editor's good choices? As regards the Ligeti, Kubrick's wife alerted him to it. Barber's adagio was undergoing a revival at the time the Platoon movie was SET in the 1960s. It's poignant.
