Can’t say I ever made any massive auction mistakes back when I was in the trade , but I still cringe at one occasion I made myself look a complete fool. I was attending an auction where another trader I knew told me he had a car going through ,and asked me if when it came into the ring would I pay it particular attention, I agreed and when the car came in, I did a great job of looking around it, looking really interested and then asked the driver to pull the bonnet so I could lift it up, he released the bonnet and it was at that point I realised it was a rear engined car. I looked up and half the auction hall including the auctioneer were laughing at me.
Only ever bought 1 car at auction in 1988. Needed a tow car. Bought a 2.3gl v6 cortina. Sunroof and Auto. All 4 doors holed through rust. 66k miles. Was an ashtray inside. Paid £80. Bought 4 scrap doors, hand brush painted it. Serviced it and ran for 5 yrs. looked a complete shed but drove like a limo. Towed my caravan everywhere. When that went got a 2.8ghia Granada a La sweeney. Beautiful motors
Year’s back, we’re at the auction, all chatting away, suddenly one of the other traders, says”shit, my car’s in next”, and off he scurries to bid up (😳) his car. We stop to listen in, bidding is strong, he’s got a member of the public on the hook, but he’s greedy and chokes it (wins his own auction). Except he didn’t. His car was 3 cars further back, he’d bought another trader’s (identical) car. He went on to choke his own too, so ended up with two identical old nails he didn’t want….😂
Hi, great advice, love your channel 👍 When I first got my licence I didn’t buy new I just went to car auctions to buy a £300 run around with a long mot, hardly ever put through for a new mot when the old one expired, I just went to auction to buy another runaround and scrapped the old one, the last car I bought in an auction was a mk2 escort back in the day , (80s)I paid £300 from the auction in Westbury , it had a dent in the rear wing but did me for work, of course I had to put a janspeed exhaust on 😂. I’m thinking now of dealing in runarounds , I have premises of such so I can do one car at a time and I can put my hand to most things, just to dip my toes in the car dealer world , just as a hobby with a little profit , don’t want to be a “trader “ as such, Look forward to the next episode 👍
In the late 70's I was in my early 20's and had started buying cars at dodgy back street auctions in lancashire, and also buying spares or repairs cars from the local paper which meant being at the newsagent that got the paper first . Mostly I did ok but must admit I did buy a late Alfasud with no reverse gear from Auction in Burnley one night . I did find a replacement box and swapped it out but made nothing on it .I never made the mistake of buying an Alpha at auction again , or a car with no reverse ..I made other mistakes but not those ! What was your first auction buy ? mine was a Triumph Herald, I must have been15/16 years old and it was £3 , yes really and I drove it home !🙄
I bought an alpha sud from brighouse once, it was 3 years old , got it home and realised you could put your fist through both inner wings it was that rotten.
Buying a car back from some stranger who bought it from you.....big mistake!! When I sold my Fiat Strada 105TC to the guy it was mint, when I bought it back I had to stop driving it straight away as a front disc had split it was so thin. As you say.......head must rule heart!
Hey Joe,great video and we have all done daft things at auction ie....buying and selling with a mate he is at one door and me and the exit bidding against each other ,getting auction fever,buying a car to sell on and and keeping it! one good tip is getting friendly with drivers and ask where,who it came from which driver drove it in and how did it drive as 99% of there cars are driven in by the auction staff. going to the same auction over the years i have become good friends with a guy who works at the auction and tells me stuff to avoid

It's happened too many times with me especially if its something your really looking for.. I can't find any small Cars for Sale here in Ireland. The Price's are going Crazy and that's if you can find what I'm looking for. If you ever decide to come over for a Visit to Ireland then let me know and there will be a Bed waiting for you both. Where was this video a few years back before I made countless very expensive mistakes? The auction house I usually use now does in-person and online, if I am going for it online without seeing the car I now use the room bids as an indicator of whether it's any good. When the people standing next to the car aren't interested there's a reason and the auction houses do well out of internet buyers who don't fully realise what they're getting. I've lost money on really nice cars and made money out of absolute dross.
You've got to be quick on your feet if somethings cheap, saw a quasgui before Christmas, it stalled at 1500,7 seater as well, quick look round, asked driver to rev it up, what's clutch like, bid 1550 and it was fine, 2k in recent receipts as well.
Don't know if you've seen, cinch are on a big loss, along with wbac and bca, all the same group, looks like you cannot continue to stuff people as they've been doing, also miss sold car finance is going to be the next ppi thing, maybe finance commissions will be clawed back from dealers (?)
Totally right about cars you like, I stick to bread and butter stuff, but get the occasional interesting one, bought a mint spider, actually nothing up with it and in partial to a Mx5, but yes the buzz soon fades if you blow money or its a nightmare car, good thing tho is with the Internet you'll always find someone for it, I sold a mg tf that I'd got stuck with the other week, took 5 adverts tho (!)
I like no mot ones, just check it's not had a recent fail, or if it has you can fix it, you'll get it a fair bit cheaper, you'll struggle to find nearly full advisory free mot, as your customers require...
@@ShiftingMetal outside Bawtry auction in the day it was a major police action outside, pulling everbody, obviously not many people would be legal, I had a dolly to pick them up, was OK till I dropped an FSO off it on the A1
