KeyForge Grim Reminders has seen its fair share of contention and controversy, and today, I wanted to share five things I would change about the set to make it just a little more polished! Don't get me wrong, I love the set, but there are a few things that, if tweaked, would make it all the more satisfying.

I don't think we would want archive hate in GR though, because only gives more tools in GR to deal with other sets. But more archive hate in future sets yeah I agree. One thing I don't see a lot talked about is GR has quite a lot of artifact control (reclaimed by nature, glimmerspore, spontaneous awakening, gegrrokuu sapper, etc.) which makes sense because of the curse artifacts. But especially with all the recursion it gives GR a lot of ways to deal with artifacts that would be able stop its shenanigans (like etan's jar, quixxle stone, annihilation ritual). Fortunately GR doesn't have a lot of scaling aember control and less control/disruption cards than some other sets, so it has some weaknesses.

I suppose I fit into the 'GR hater' camp, lol. I've cooled off on the set a fair amount and don't actively hate it the way I used to, but it's still my least favourite set. My main gripe is the distinct lack of counterplay for many of its combos. Look back at the Gangernaut combo and how it could be mitigated by simply playing creatures. Meanwhile in GR, combos like the Dr X, Ironyx Rebel and Xyp simply can't be stopped unless you have very specific tools to prevent them from all hitting the board, and even then your opponent can probably play around that because of the sheer number of recursion tools in GR. I personally think GG should make some important errata to the set and then vow to be more careful in future, with some key ones being: 1. Winds of Death either doesn't let you archive your own creatures or only let's you archive if you're not haunted. (Not sure which would be the best solution.) 2. Dr. X puts a Mars creature _into_ play ready and doesn't play it. This would heavily curb Ironyx Rebel shenanigans. 3. Witch Queen's gifted 'Destroyed' abilities only trigger when it is not your turn. This would prevent the infamous combos using Waste Not and Kangaphant. 4. There's a nasty combo if you have both Multi-Dimensional Rescue and Missile Officer Myers that essentially lets you draw a whole bunch of cards since a) MDR won't be purged when used through Myers' Scrap ability and b) Scrap abilities don't count towards the rule of 6. Just make it so MDR gets purged. I just hope Aember Skies reaches a happy medium of being powerful and having fun combos without reaching absurd levels. Time will tell!

Beanstalk should've said 'Friendly Giants enter ready and enraged' and had no action ability. That would still be powerful with Brikk Nastee, but not be broken

That would definitely work!

Right, or just have its second effect, but no passive, would also be cool! And frankly, it could be limited to Deck (not Deck and Discard) so that opponent doesn't have to see the same Giant over and over again.

Completely agree with everything said. And I have decks with some of these cards. Every single point is true.

I completely agree with all 5 fixes!

I think Key Abduction is the problem, moreso than Winds of Death. When Winds of Death "enables you to drop a bunch of creatures from the same house" - your opponent gets to do that first. Where multiple WoD enable an even easier/more consistent KA or many-creatures-in-a-turn benefit, the errata could be just completing the cycle: "Purge each card from your Archive. Then, archive each creature from both players' discards. Then, destroy each creature. Then place the cards you purged from your archive this way into your Discard." (Last sentence optional, depending on whether or not we mind multiple WoD enabling huge self-purge.) Beanstalk is one of the most broken cards ever. Consider that Knightapult is good while affecting one creature, and not allowing you to tutor for one(!) I like your summary and look forward to facing you in R2 of the ABR #11 finals, for Sealed Alliance - the coolest format. :-) Maybe we could agree to a set other than GR? Maybe a throw-back like CotA? :-)

Interesting thoughts! And yeah, comparing Beanstalk to Knightapult really does just highlight how insane it is lol! Looking forward to facing you in ABR! :)

Rebel also allows for stupid Memrox Combos. With Rebel you can Memrox for 30 in a turn. I would add to the the winds of death point that mass recursion is too easy. Well and Island letting you return 6-12 cards or so is Mega broken as well

The recursion is wild this set! I was listening to a podcast episode (the Sloppy Labwork one), and they were saying that pre-GR sets had around 15-19 recursion cards, whereas GR has 60+! And lots of them recur lots of stuff at a time, it's crazy!

I mostly agree, other than Beanstalk - in my personal experience I’ve never found it too oppressive; I’d much rather see Brawling Grounds reworked, especially because of decks where it shows up in multiples

Wow, I've never seen Brawling Grounds in multiples, that does sound insane!

Winds of Death* should only archive your opponent's discard pile. The archiving should be a downside for a powerful boardwipe.

That would be an interesting fix too, I could see that!

@@aembermedes very silly me accidentally making it Winds of Exchange tho 😅

God I hope GG listens to you. I also love GR but I have to agree, there is a lot of stuff with no reasonable counterplay.

Broken combos always existed. Brig and Genka are sick, bit the community seem to focus on GR only. I applauded the nerf of Ecto, because that was absolutely insane...but the rest is not stronger than some dear old fashioned combos, except for some very rare untamed tricks.

So Mars is either too weak or too explosive?
@aembermedes

Honestly, I personally think Mars in Winds of Exchange hit a pretty nice balance! I think they were mostly underpowered in CotA and AoA unless you got some VERY specific cards, and GR Mars is really pushing it, though (besides Ironyx Rebel) I think they're great. But WoE Mars seemed pretty centered to me!

I have to say that I heavily disagree with you on this one 😅 Those changes would only be relevant to lowering the average power of decks in the set, making it a bit more compatible to the average power of DT or so, but in the same time would ruin the fun plays and combos of the competitive format.. right now all of these combos are super fun ways to enter competitive play! and against strong decks of other sets these cards are not broken at all and more like on the same power level as what you feel with competitive decks from MM and later sets.. I feel that these things let competitive play be much more vibrant and cool than what we see up to this set and changing it will make it somewhat more boring than it is .. If someone thinks it's to powerful a set in the same way DT was a bit weaker, again, talking about the average of decks and not the strong competitive ones, than simply don't include it in sealed format with other sets for now .. I honestly believe this set introduced amazing decks and cards and mechanics to competitive play and restrictions like these would kill many decks that do such amazing inclusions to the format.

Very interesting take!

The "fun" combos are not very fun when you're on the receiving end and feel like no matter what deck you're running, you can't do anything about it unless it's a mirror match and you can just draw your combo pieces sooner. If you want that type of card game, you're better off playing Yugioh. There are plenty of GR competitive decks out there that don't use degenerate bs like WoDKA. The set would still be fantastic (and probably STILL one of the best sets) if it were to remove/fix the gamebreaking cards.

it's funny when meta discussions happen when a game has no tournaments. TBH, card balancing and design should be the last of our concerns when there is no bright future on the horizon. GG actions only made the game worse on any level: alliance is a failure, 2-loss out tournaments are a failure, no roadmaps and missed opportunities are failures, more product is a failure, more premium product for stores will be a failure -no shop pays in advance stuff they'll get IN MONTHS-, organized play doesn't exist and that's a failure... So... enjoy the game, the powercreep, the powerspike and whatever: GG doesn't care.
