In Jazz Guitar, Chromatic Licks are really a huge part of what we consider the jazz sound. But you can use chromatic passing notes and enclosures as devices to create different kinds of surprises in your solos. This Guitar Lesson is going over 5 different examples of how you can use chromaticism and chromatic approach in your playing. The examples are both in a Modal setting and on a II V I.
The video covers
- Adding color with chromatic passing notes
- Suspending chord tones with chromatic enclosures
- Creating forward motion towards the next chord
- Outside sequences and parallel movement.
Content:
0:00 Intro
0:23 Overview - Modal and II V I examplees
1:25 #1 Adding Color to Solo
3:46 #2 Chromatic Phrases for Forward Motion
5:12 #3 Suspend a Resolution and create tension
8:04 #4 Shifting Intervals - The "Pat Metheny lick"
9:39 #5 Outside Chromatic Ideas - Side-Slipping

These are some tasty licks and you explain the use of chromaticism really well. This is really beyond my capacity to play right now but provides something nice to stretch into. Thanks!

Jens, I can't imagine how you manage to put out such a high-quality, action-packed, 150%-useful video every single week, but you always do! These chromatic approaches to melodic improvising add so much color to your playing, contrasted to the arpeggios and scales I can barely apply. I was wondering: If I watch all of your videos, will I get an honorary guitar-god degree of some kind? :)

Thanks! I do my best, so it is really great to hear that you like the videos! I am not sure if there is a price fro watching all of them? Maybe you will gain a Danish accent 😄

Jens! Would you please elaborate more on the use of pentatonics ala Montgomery & Benson? You touched on this & it was 🤯

Who is your favourite when it comes to using Chromaticism? Guitarist or other another instrument 👍🙂

Hi Jens, I would say Scott Henderson. Especially when he moves around some king of pentatonic stuff ... I 've sent you an email some days ago about a jazz guitar app, did you check it ?

Hey man i love you work and just like started jazz guitar soloing can you make a video on comman jazz rhythm Thanks a lot keep making great videos :)
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 5 лет назад
@Dark Seven Master The best thing you can do is to start to learn some solos and bebop themes, that way you can get some feel for the rhythm. Maybe check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8fCF_us-dg0.html

Charlie Parker, and more recently Michael Brecker.

one of the best vertical players in jazz is George Benson in my optics, if you change the speed to slow such things are practicable of course...24 per notes bar!!!Lol. times 32...

Have you ever done a video on fingerstyle chord Melody? Maybe along the lines of what Charlie Byrd or Gene Bertoncini played??
@JensLarsen

I do have a few videos on Chord Melody on the channel, but in general it is stuff I do on Patreon 🙂

Jens, once you get these examples comfortably under your fingers in the keys given, would you recommend applying them in a regular circle-of-5ths pattern, or focusing on certain of the most common keys? or neither? also, what video is that Metheny clip from if you don't mind sharing?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 5 лет назад
I would not try to practice the phrases in a systematic way, just isolate the chromatic ideas and try to write your own licks with them :) The Metheny video is this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S9c1F4o_doc.html

Why not do a video about vertical playing, like how to sound mor elike a saxophonist, wouldn't be On Green Dolphin Street be a great standard to demonstrate such on? Vertical on the neck I mean to be able most of the time by sextoles be able in one bar cover at least six strings and three octaves to more sound like an saxophonist, scales arpeggio's or something in between and maybe on the important spots of the tune(highlightspoints) bit you could practice such over all the charts...also pentatonic over three octave could be effective maybe(aslerations..)

Do you have a video analyzing Metheny’s use of chromaticism?
@JensLarsen

Not only on his use of chromaticism but there is this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CUtjnC7S7kk.html

Hey Jens, could you imagine how boring a lot of music would be if it wasn't for chromaticism using steps, and some slides and/or bends !?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 5 лет назад
On the other hand a lot of great music has no chromatic passing notes, like a ton of classical music 🙂
@shipsahoy1793
@shipsahoy1793 5 лет назад
Understood but there is some interesting technical things going on in classical music if you look for them; when I tend to think of music from an analog, unquantized perspective, music has an infinite range of pitches between octaves ;-).
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 5 лет назад
Sure, I was just thinking about how most Mozart is without chromaticism compared to bebop.
