Learn jazz guitar and learn how to make music with what you learn.
Videos that show you how things work, and also how you use them in your own playing because what is great about learning Jazz is that you become able to play Jazz and make music.
In 2014 I was happy working as a jazz guitarist and touring with my Band Træben, but I was mostly teaching Metallica, Coldplay and AC/DC. Of course there is nothing wrong with those genres of music, but I really wanted to teach Jazz so I started writing some lessons on my website. After publishing a few on Ultimate Guitar, I was adviced by Chris Zoupa to start making RU-vid videos (if you like the videos you should really Thank him). As you can see that turned out to be a lot of fun!
where did that Bb7 in ur IV-IVm-I come from & why is it suddenly a "min subdom"? I played it .. chose voicings that resulted in nice smooth voice-leading .. but where did that Bb7 come from & why is it a "min subdom"?
It's a Fm6 with a Bb in the bass, and because it resolves like that with the exact same voice-leading. it is a minor subdominant function. I can find a video that explains more if you want to?
@@monoswinger Yes,b but that also shows that the "cycle" is not very strong. What makes this powerful is the parallel moving of the II Vs. If you make it Fø Bb7(b13) it won't sound that great, and Bø E7 is also a bit weak in there.
@@JensLarsen yep, I've totally got you, I just wanted it to be mentioned, at least in the comments - as in different situatons it can be a working concept - just: an example: play Bm7b5-E7 as a soloist, or upper structure sub, over Dm7-G7 can be a very nice variation, or mindset-shift, if you need something like that :)
Jens, I think I am too old. 74. It's getting harder to memorize things. Hands sometimes ache. I believe learning jazz is a lifelong thing and I don't think there are enough years left in my life to become any good. It would be like a dream if I could know enough and have enough skill to play with a small jazz combo. For many years I played in rock and pop bands. But it seems like making a transition to playing jazz would be impossible. I remember about 7 or 8 years ago and I attended this party and they had a jazz band, all young college age guys, sax bass and guitar, no piano, no guitar. I remember thinking later I wish I could have backed them up.
If you don't feel that you can achieve what you consider a minimum then you should indeed not learn. If you think that you would enjoy the process regardless of how many concerts you end up playing then you should.
if you wonder why there are no bends, that means you would bend , therefore bend your note and bend the bend-police' knickers in a 'bend' . If you're not famous, no one will give a damn and you'll remain "unfamous"; if you're famous they'll call you an innovator and you'll become more famous. But most importantly: PLAY
Excellent well played, you’ve got it dialed in!! Sounds great, the first is my favorite, I guess there’s something about the way you play it, I can hear how it is used in so many of the songs I love
@@patrickkirby7612 Hello, my god NO. I mean exactly the opposite, most of all that Jazz sucks, because to much jiberish and not enough real melody, and why tell backdoor, certainly to be complicated and boring, instead of iv bVII I.....!
@@patrickkirby7612 At the same time I say "make more jiberish and go create melody with it" or "False note is the beautifullest thing sometimes" ...Or other things like that I say !! 🤪👍
I don't think I really understand how I apply these cadences to a song. Would I need to tell a bassist beforehand that I am going to change the progression? Or is this for when you are solo/accompanying a singer?
Blues for Alice. Bar 5 is the IV chord because blues. Bar 6 is a ivm7-bVII7 progression (the backdoor 2-5) Parker uses it for chromatic movement from the IV to the II and then hitting you with the V of the parent key. It's flippin' brilliant. Please correct this if this is not what is happening.
I have a boss katana $500 stage amp and it suites my needs perfectly fine for not being a touring musician. If you tour and fear damaging your amp, then the fractal is for sure the way to go. I can get just about any sound out of my boss amp that i want.
@@JensLarsen I do agree that the speaker inside the cabinet feels thin however if you run it through a computer with a pair of good headphones it sounds killer 😁 but that is just my personal need and it fills the need very well and that's really all I can ask for. I run it through my computer and have a pair of audio technica mx30 headphones to play it through, suites my needs very well absolutely no complaints from me
Our mouth can get us into trouble and negative people who think jazz is boring or out dated but I know that is a lie because beauty is earned by good technique make sure we get gradually better because it's a goal thanks man
Thanks for this. I've been taking jazz guitar lessons for going on 4 years now. It keeps my mind working and I'm always looking to improve and learn something new. I'm 70 and I find that jazz is life in all its colors
