I look at 5 different shots and ask, "are cinematic?" Whether you use a DJI OM 3 4 or 5, a Pocket 2 or a Zhiyun gimbal, or just like smartphone filmmaking, this video is for you.

I’m learning so much. There’s a lot of technical things to know but I like how you pair the technique with the characteristic it can have on the story.

I like when a pan is used as a reveal. Pan while following a person or moving item. As you turn you time it so the person is in front of the reveal and then stop the pan and let the moving person reveal.

interesting to break down the types of vdo shots and their names and purposes. Also, you're style of presenting is sooooo laidback and kool. I hope you get lots of American RU-vidrs watching so they can learn your style as well.

So glad I found this. Thank you for posting. I'm an amateur aerial and land based videographer with a DJI drone and DJI OM 3 and I find the aerial cinematic shots far easier to compose, control and edit than I do the land based gimble work. It's that I struggle with so this has helped no end.

Great video with lots of useful tips and ideas. I'm just getting started in film making. At 70, not sure how much I'm going to achieve. Interesting that you mention Filmic Pro as there appears to be a LOT of unhappy users now that Filmic has gone over to a very expensive subscription model.

Extremely good examples for a successful application of the “roving”/pov shot are “hardcore Henry” (2015) and Blair witch project (1999).

Hey Simon, excellent work as always! Question. Do you use or own any mirrorless camera for filming or is it just smartphones nowadays? I'm thinking about getting one but I don't have much experience or a high budget. Been doing some filming just using a S20 and a gimbal. What do you recommend? Another phone or a budget camera? Thanks for the work, it's really great
@SiHorrocks
@SiHorrocks 2 года назад
I've never owned a DSLR or mirrorless camera. Everything I've shot for this channel comes from a smartphone. When I'm filming myself I usually use my Note20 Ultra and the iPhone to demonstrate

What mic do you use when narrating over the video? I love all your videos by the way. I’ve seen a lot of tutorials lately and yours are by far the best. Do you use the insta 360 one RS at all?
@SiHorrocks

Hi Simon. Delighted I found this chanel. Just a quick question. I'm guessing you prefer creating videos on a phone rather than a gopro. I have both, but I'm looking at buying my 1st gimbal for a family holiday (non adventurous). I'm leaning towards the Samsung as I love the bigger screen
@SiHorrocks
@SiHorrocks 2 года назад
you're leaning towards a Samsung + Gimbal? Never had a GoPro but I've just finished a video on the Insta360 GO 2. Very versatile but not as good quality, of course. I think it's probably similar to the GoPro in that you will not get as good quality, lens options, options to use various apps and so on. A smartphone is a full filmmaking studio, a GoPro is just a camera.

Thanks so much for these tips, they’ll definitely help me make my shots more cinematic. I had a question that I was hoping you could answer - I currently vlog with a Canon EOS 200D, but I’m looking try out using an iPhone 12 Pro Max with a Rode Video Mic Me-L and a gimbal. What gimbal(s) would you recommend that could hold that set up (where ideally the mic wouldn’t hit the arm of the gimbal)?

@@SiHorrocks Good to know! I’ve been looking at DJI OM4 SE and Zhiyun Smooth 5 as potentials that could hopefully work with my Rode Video Micro on a cold shoe mount instead of buying a ME-L which by the looks of it won’t function with either of the gimbals properly

More inside-the-box thinking. Stop telling people what you have learned from others that thought they knew everything too. Photography is like food, music, sex, even drugs they are all subjective. You have your single perspective... that's apparently been shaped by emulating what others before you have done and think, that's fine if you want to follow, just stop telling people that they shouldn't lead. Photographers should do what they want and not worry about a single myopic perspective. Especially in a world where it cost virtually nothing to snap a picture or video... working with film is another matter, but that constipated thinking doesn't need to be dragged along with digital camera innovation. Stay safe.

I've always found the video's on this channel more "outside of the box". Even though I've had a lifetime of interest with "all things A/V", Simon offers refreshingly hands-on, practical presentations devoid of too much technical theory. It's a unique balance, and he offers this free. - (sure, there's the option to become a 'patreon') - but the amount of effort he puts into these YT tuts at no charge is so generous! I've learned stacks and have never felt that he pushes his own view. I get an insight into his thought processes, then take on board the parts that resonate with me. We're so fortunate to have someone like Simon who's prepared to open up his experiences to us. And he has such a pleasant manner as well.

@@sonic7digiteyes209 Well, it's a good thing that his box is big enough for you to fit in. You can take that one of two ways Mr. anonymous, maybe it's not "his box" you're thinking about. Nice, edit though... I guess after 7 hours of drugged musings you decided you hadn't been sycophantic enough. Kudos princess.

I don't normally make comments but just wanted to offer another perspective here. Because Simon's offering something for free, I'm thankful for that. I don't take on board everything he says - only what adds to my skills. Even if I don't agree with some of his views I'm not going to crucify the guy.
