Traynor is my favorite and I never heard of them until today.

sarahdelano they’re Canada’s answer to Marshall and Fender. I use two vintage ones from the late 60s. The one to keep your eyes out for is a Bassmaster. It’s basically a Bassman/JTM 45. All hardwired with amazing transformers.

In addition to what Kevin said, Traynors are built like tanks. Pete Traynor used to test his amps by dropping them from 2 floors and just swap out the broken tubes out and they would work just fine.
@bflo1000
@bflo1000 5 лет назад
They are also one of the most reasonably priced vintage tube amps watt per watt. Never played one myself. IMO so is my Bugera BVV 3000; unless it doesn't hold up.

Great to see the inclusion of the Traynor in this video. They are an under-appreciated brand. Pride of Canada! All of these rigs sounded pretty respectable.

IMO Traynor is a bit on the trebly side. That's the only problem I have w Traynor bass amps. I do happen to prefer the pricier amps in this vid to the MUCH cheaper Traynor & Fender, but any of these rigs will do for guitar.

Amazing how different people have different preferences. IMO they weren't even using the best Fender. The black faced or blonde Fenders sound better than the silver to me. Also the Marshall is different than most Marshalls. Much w more bottom.

Johan, I'm continually amazed at the effort and quality of the content you provide entirely for free on your channel. The gear, the no-nonsense comparisons, the complete lack of mindless chat, and the highly original approach you take - it's so continually refreshing and honestly leaves most all other RU-vid gear videos in the dust. I'm utterly surprised that some guitar gear mag hasn't poached you (and your associates) to provide content for their publications - although I hope that never happens! Sincerely, thanks for all your time and effort. :)

Hiwatt -- really warm and smooth. Great rhythm tone. Fender -- fairly balanced and articulate, though I can see why some players wanted to hot-rod them for more distortion. Orange -- sounds great on its own, but it would get lost in a live mix/band setting! Traynor -- sounded really clear and punchy, although I think it lacked some bottom-end. Would cut through the mix for sure. Marshall -- a little bit of everything, but it sounded pretty hot in this video, like it was going to feedback and blow up at any moment, hahaha.

The Orange or80 does cut through the mix, hell an Or30 cut's through the mix at any but the largest bar. The Orange has more dynamics if you cut the volume down 50%.
@adamwatson6916
@adamwatson6916 6 лет назад
Gordon Tubbs I'm a traynor user and your right they are not a big bottom end amp . very punchy and mid focused with clear top end . I have i traynor ycv 50 watt combo and one thing I didn't like was that the bottom was a bit too thin. switching out all the tubes helped . put some tung sol 12ax7 in the pre amp and some gold lion kt77s in the power section and that helped thicken the bottom and pulled back the mids A touch so now it's much more balanced sounding. before the mids and treble were drowning out the low end. much better and fuller now. traynor amps also benefit greatly from heavy magnet speakers . tried a 20 watt ycv with a greenback and the bottom end farted out like crazy. they definitely better suited to the h speakers.

Oranges have way more lows than the other amps, so can be too much when using a neck or middle pickup (looks like strat middle to me here) but that is why oranges have an extra lows control called FAC besides the bass control, so they must have had that set to most bass instead of cutting bass when using strat neck or middle, if he cut the lows on the FAC that strat would have no mud yet still sound deeper than all the other amps, or if he used strat bridge, it would sound deeper bass than all the others and no mud even with highest bass settings.
@RocknJazzer
@RocknJazzer 4 года назад
@orangewizard - yep I use the FAC bass cut knob on my 70s orange all the time, using that you can get it actually LESS muddy than most any other amp, as it can cut the lows and low mids so drastically you get a very cutting mud free tone. Also it seems Johan almost always sets his marshalls with bass on 0, and maybe on his other amps too, so to not reduce the bass on the orange too is not a fair comparison. But yes oranges since they can be set for more bass than most any other amp, as well as because they have a very full midrange (not midscooped tonestack like most amps) they can when set with too much bass get muddier than most other amps, so it takes a bit to learn the control settings to avoid that.

Johan, I love your videos -- as always, this one is fantastic. I especially enjoyed the intro to this one; my partner often smiles and knows I'm watching one of your vids when she hears the "let's go!". For what it's worth, during these shootouts I think it would be valuable to change the order of the amps (during editing) for each riff, so as to make comparisons across amps easier. When they're in the same order each time, we can only really hear how each amp sounds compared to whatever has been presented directly before and after it. Regardless... thanks, and keep up the good work!

I have the same Traynor. Mine is from 1972. I I have been using a 1968 Rickenbacker 330-12 with it since I got the amp. I paid $500 Canadian for it. It needed some work in 2011. That took 2 weeks and $280. It has been a great and dependable piece of hardware. Makes my Ricky 12 sound amazing as it should. And as I am Canadian I am so proud to say my Traynor was made right here in the Toronto area.

Surprisingly: Orange (fuzzy breakup enthusiast here), Marshall, Hiwatt/Fender Tie (almost included tie with the Marshall, which is even my favorite amp from experience) very surprised! Biggest surprise, however, is seeing so many people liking the traynor. No disrespect intended, but I just wanted to paint that thing green and throw it in the ocean. But that’s just interesting to me, personal preference. And then we don’t have to fight over the same amps on the used market. Great video, great playing and awesome gear choices as always.

stellar video. confirms how I feel about all these amps. the hiwatt was my favorite for the led paul tones. but what surprised my a little is that I preferred the traynor for the fender tones even more so then the fender amp. the Orange was o.k but I have never been grabbed by the Orange sound. it's just a bit to fuzzy sounding here for me. the traynor is the sleeper here it's every bit as good as any of these amps. they are built like dump trucks and they are affordable you can get vintage traynor for a fraction of these other amps. in from Canada and any traynor I want to try is just a walk up the street. their modern tube amps are fantastic as well . built like tanks and in North America to boot and not in Asia . and they sound incredible . you can get fender vox and marshall like tones all from the same amp . very versatile and that take pedals as good or better then any amp out there and all of their amps can be had new for under 1000 dollars and they kill everything in their price range. the traynor ycv 50 watt crushes the marshall dsl in tone. very jcm 800 like tone. although i plan on switching out the stock vintage 30 for something a little less harsh like a creamback to make it a little more vintage.

Marshall, Hiwatt, Fender, Traynor, Garnet, Ampeg, Sunn etc. I still own around 25 amps and have been through probably around 50 over the years. The Traynor YGL3 Mkiii will hang with any of them. I had mine modded for 6550's and had a very minor "plexi" mod done to it. It put out around 130w, I think it's the best amp for guitar or bass that I've ever heard.

This is one of your best videos ever! I thought that all of the amps brought something interesting to the table that was different from the others. I personally found that the Bassman and the Hiwatt had more in common with each other than any of the others. As far as a best sound, it really just depends on what your need is for your particular song or mix.

He was using Sound City I believe before Dave Reeves' Hiwatts....SoundCity amps didnt handle the abuse of travelling and moving very well, and constantly needed repairs. So it was said. The Bassman was much earlier I think. Then Marshall after Hiwatt. The gain was what everyone was looking for in that genre of music back then. If Reeves hadnt past away, he was moving towards more gain as Marshall was probably his biggest competitor back then. Hence the OL versions not yet produced. After Daves death, the company kept production running until the money ran out, ( Biacrown era... same company, same people, legal had alot to do with this change ) and in this period, they did put out the OL versions of Hiwatts. Because Hiwatt was badly in debt, Partridge Transformers stopped delivery, and Drakes were now used, ( exrta gain stage before the sound stack ) This was an original design by Reeves that was still being considered before his death. I consider the standard DR's AND the OL versions, up to 1984, Reeves era. Sorry for the rant.

Blaydrnnnr that's right if you look at some photos it looks like he used a mix of sound city and hiwatt I'm not sure if it's on the rsrrc it looks like Pete's has a sound city amp with a hiwatt branding you can tell because the controls were different on the genuine hiwatt. sound city had round knobs hiwatt had chicken head controls.

Depends on the years of course. It says in 1969, Pete was using Hiwatts exclusively, with a custom head built just for him. (CP103 )Eventually he went to the stock version DR103W's... Great video of the WHO at Isle of Wight 1970 with a wall of Hiwatts behind Pete. Its funny that Free, ( Paul Kossoff was the whole reason I ever started playing ) were VERY young, and hadnt made a ton of money yet from the label, so they were still playing Koss' old Marshalls, while the WHO, Moody Blues, Tull and a few others got to run the newer amps..Hiwatts....in either case, I have Hiwatts, SoundCity, and Marshall, a couple Fenders, a Vox, ... and 6 pairs of mid 70's fane speakers to go with the Hiwatts and SoundCity amps... Cant ever have enough. But Marshall was the go to amps of the day. The more gain, the better...plus, it was no secret that there was a "sound" that EVERYONE wanted. Marshalls fit the bill.

The HiWatt sounds like the Stevie Ray Vaughn sound with the strat to me! Traynor sounds the brightest.

Traynor-good presence and articulation Hiwatt-a little more honk than the fender Orange-chewy with a hint of fuzziness Fender-great low end character Marshall-a blend of each...just right

My faves: Hiwatt, Marshall, Traynor. Bassman 100 was also surprisingly good. Orange was just a bit soft on the attack, but with lots of harmonic richness. Not a bad one in the bunch, really. Thanks for the video.

Marshall has my vote. In fact I got a Marshall MG 15 amp for my birthday 4 years ago. Plus I also have a Korg G3 guitar performance processor and Ernie Ball Jr volume pedals that I plug my Squier Stratocasters into.
