Thank you Marie. I am so tired of being yelled down by the essential oil brigade whenever I try to warn people about inappropriate use of essential oils, and companies that promote such use. Natural is not bloody harmless….ask any box jellyfish(the most venomous animal on earth)
YES! As a chemist with a BS degree, I always share awareness of the dangers of the "natural is safe" narrative and those who irresponsibly push it. They are taking advantage of the ignorant and have absolutely no guilt or shame about it, as long as they get clicks and sales. Lye is natural as well, so are we just going to pretend it won't burn the skin off your bones if you were to spill more than a drop on you? If someone says you shouldn't use an ingredient or product simply because you cannot pronounce it or you've never heard of it, RUN. We have to use the scientific and/or chemical name for almost everything these days when labeling or sharing ingredient lists. It's the law in practically every country that imports and exports. "Sodium hydrogen carbonate" sounds like something you wouldn't want to eat until you realize it's just baking soda. Google also exists, so just because you've never heard of it doesn't mean it's not safe. Educate yourself using REPUTABLE sources, not Karen's blog on how making a homemade vapor rub cured her son's covid. These people purposely mislead you because their brand missions wouldn't make sense unless they did!
@@SaturdaySoul that’s true, the mlms are very clearly just out for the money, but the thing I find hard to deal with is their “true believers” that trot along practically begging their “great leaders” to fleece them, and no amount of fact can change their (for want of a better word) minds. It’s scary, cos I’ve seen them bragging about applying straight eos to children, or taking eos internally!!
@@SaturdaySoulI’m not sure they don’t care, I think it’s more that they jump into this stuff with profits in mind but they don’t have sufficient knowledge and understanding of what they are using and selling.
I thank you too Marie. I have been teaching safe and clinical aromatherapie since 1992, so I am a kind of a dinosaur in our industry (did my diploma back in 1990 at the Shirley Price College). I wrote 10 books, one of them is a comprehensive reference book now in its 7th edition. That's the reason why I find this bad practice (which is now becoming more and more common in our industry) so annoying and appalling. And so dangerous. Especially when essential oils are applied on innocent children. So a video like yours is soooo precious!
I used tea tree oil undiluted on my face for pimples a few years ago. I ended up in ER. My entire face swelled. Body swelled. Eyes shut and hives from top to bottom. Spent a week in my bsmt with the heat off to bring the hives down. 🔥
Yes and dilution doesn't work with water. It's shocking how many people think you can add EO to water, shake it and spray it as if water and oil mix. One has to mix it with oil or use poly 80 which makes it soluble in water. @@kathypelot2187
Another huge DIY mistake I see is many people making bath salts and sprays (from natural body sprays to bug spray) are not adding Poly80 because they want it all natural. They also stick a label on there to shake before spraying as if doing so will mix the EO into the water based product, it doesn't, it just makes the drops smaller. Water and oil don't mix period! So people spray themselves and get hundreds of undiluted drops of EO on them that can burn their skin, worse if they then go out in the sun. With bath salts a customer will slip in the tub as the EO coats it. Poly 80 makes sure the EO's mix with water leaving no film in tubs and no drops of undiluted oil on skin.
I'm so glad that someone else mentions about poly 80! I used a small percentage of this in my body scrub, so my body scrubs are not oily and slippery in the bath! I've used body scrubs that don't contain it and they are gross! Just an oily mess in the bath!
I was at a veterinary hospital (my dog was getting chemo) and I noticed a young lady crying in the waiting room. She told me that she'd been there since 4 a.m. when she'd rushed her dog there and that her dog had tea tree oil poisoning. They didn't know if he was going to make it or not. I felt terrible for her. Then I remembered all the times I had used tea tree on and around my dogs thinking it was okay. Fortunately, my dogs never had a negative reaction (that I know of), but I never used it again.
Thank you so very much . Everything you are talking about is so true . I have a lady I follow who actually wrote a book on the dangers of essential oils. They are absolutely not all pure and can become reactive in so many different ways . For all us newbies it's important to know what we are dealing with . Less is more when it comes to bottled essential oils . There are good and bad places to purchase from so we all need to stay safe . Thank you again for your informative video. I love your content , knowledge, , and kindness in the way you approach your videos . Yes I subscribe to your channel and have almost all your videos saved to my library . Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with us . Have a great day ❤
I legitimately had someone argue with me that they can use essential oils straight with no carriers. They were so adamant that what they were talking about was facts 🤦🏻♀️
The only one that you can do that with is lavender on burns Lavendula angustifolia. All others, dilute. I did the lavender on a couple blisters made from Bacon grease splatter on my arm. I put one drop on each blister within 5 minutes of them developing. I waited 10 minutes then reapplied the same way. No more blisters.
This was an extremely helpful video. I watch all your videos and take notes on almost everything you say. I am starting my own business and you are the best go to for all my information. Thank you so much for all your help and education on just about anything I have questions on. You are truly the best and most informative I have ever come across.
Thank you for this informative video. I burnt my hand with an essential oil that took a couple of months to fully heal. It was so painful and I regret not wearing gloves.
Thankyou so much Marie. Along these lines I was wondering if you might be able to help with a video or blog outlining exactly how to properly understand the IFRA website. I have tried and for some reason can't find usage information on it. I'm sure I'm missing something and feel so stupid, but I really want to stop feeling like I have to rely on information (often wrong or incomplete) from other random sources. I want to properly understand the IFRA guidelines and how to read them for all essential oils. Thanks again and I hope you can help, I have asked other youtubers to no avail. xx
Thank you! We gotta remember that a lot of these compounds are derived by the plant to defend itself from predation. Great, amazing, but also... plant weapons! 🪴
Loved this! Not sure what I did but my skin totally broke out in itchy bumps and my eczema flared way up. Not sure if it's the essential oils, fragrance oils or one of the surfactants I used or something else entirely.
I have worked with essential oils over 40 years! They are incredibly, but must be respected. I see essential oils added like crazy to soap, without the recognition that there are differences between the companies!! Such a HUGE difference. I have extremely high quality EO and use them very low amounts, then can add some a little later AFTER the soap has completely cured. You really are terrific. Thanks for all you do!
I just came to this vid from her lip mask video, because the tea tree oil face wash I bought had separated in the bottle, and the little bit I had used burned the hell out of skin around my lips. It's been three days since then and it's still really, really swollen 😭
That's probably a question for the regulatory body in your country that is in charge of that stuff-why don't they require it? I'm guessing essential oils are in a broad "not food" category, so expiry dates aren't even considered, but that's just a guess. Check out the Tisserand article I linked in the free partner blog post for some more information on knowing when they've expired :)
Hi Marie! I was checking the Colleen Rothschild viral tinted eye cream and i was wondering if you have anything similar for diying on your channel! Or do you think that i could basically add mica to whatever eye cream/ under eye gel recipe? Sorry for the totally random question! Thanks❤
Yes all amazing information. I have a question though, what do I do if I cannot find the maximum usage rate for specific oils? Where can I find a list for all essential oils. I looked over the IFRA website but I couldn't find it.
I've shared more info and links here: www.humblebeeandme.com/essential-oils-in-lotion/ :) TL; DR: Tisserand and Young's "Essential Oil Safety: A Guide for Health Care Professionals" is an excellent resource, though it isn't inexpensive. New Directions Aromatics has excellent data for the essential oils they sell that can work well as a reference, too :)
Thanks for the video! I’ve been using disposable plastic pipettes to transfer my EOs into my the body butter containers. I can control the drop size and count as well as provide a level of consistency. I feel this is a safe method of dispensing the oils.

Literally the same thing as essential oil. The only difference is that fragrance oil is manufactured by humans from the same molecules that plants use to make essential oil. If you’re sensitive skin person you should avoid using anything fragrant topically
Fragrance oils have made improvements over the years, and some are actually safer to use than essential oils, i have fragrance oils that contain no allergens, whereas my essential oils blends contains a long list of allergens
When I started my skin care formulation journey (when I was diy’ing in cups and spoons, and grams) my skin suffered . So, For now, I avoid them like the plague😅
