Marie, you've said same thing I have. "Since I've done away from commercial products . Body hates preservatives. Lol" but in all honesty, others do same. Nature is best.. keep explaining, I'll keep listening.. another piece of puzzle put together.. thanks
As a black person I dont mind the oily, and heavy formula, as we get extremely dry skin. Thank you so much for the info, I have learned a great deal and will be applying this knowledge to my neck batch.
This is not a generalization.they simply said they don’t mind .as I am also black with EXTREMELY DRY SKIN SO AS SHE SAID I DONT MIND NEITHER STOP BASHING PEOPLE WHO HAVE A DIFFERENT OPINION
A tip for greasiness is arrowroot powder . Add to your body butter batch and it will cut down the greasiness of bodybuttters Also it’s a difference between whipped body buttter and regular body butter One is more fluffy like depending on how long you whip
@@SongBirdSingsSongs use half a teaspoon . It doesn’t take much . I don’t really like it and stopped putting it in my recipe. I use black seed oil and argon oil as my carrier oil and it goes on like butter and doesn’t leave greasy feel . Best recipe i have made . Black seed oil , Shea butter , argon oil ,few drops of vitamin E if you want
@@QiyeTLyriQue you can add any essential oil you would like . The black seed oil won’t over power the essential oil . I have a RU-vid channel called @feelsofreebodycare where i make different skincare products for my business. If you go there and select the whipped body butter video there are links to an essential oil dilution that will tell you how much essential oil you can use with your carrier oil . Your carrier oil will be the black seed oil in this case .
I live in a humid climate (FL) and I have never considered how that affects the moisture of my skin (I have dry skin). Also, I was always taught to apply lotion/body butters when I'm freshly out of the bath. That truly does lock in all that moisture
Scale down to 25g to fine tune your formulation. Scale up to mass produce it. Fast absorbing, well-scented, non-greasy creams with soothing and hydrating properties are my favorite. :)
Being impatient & not whipping my body butter long enough to make it fluffy & creamy has been my mistake!😕😆, but I’ve also discovered that adding a tablespoon or so of aloe Vera gel to my body butter helps with the hydration aspect of it.☺️💜
one thing i cannot stand is when people call shea butter "greasy". They just don't know how to use it. I apply while my skin is still damp from a bath or shower and let it absorb into my skin. I don't use a whole lot because a little does go along way
I also made the big batch mistake😅 I actually like "heavier" body lotions, especially with coconut oil. I love how glowy my skin gets and how it provides moisture throughout the day. I'm still working on formulating an emulsified lotion with butters, oils and water/gel.
It is VERY challenging having the conversation with individuals about adding a hydrating cosmetic to their daily routine vs using a cosmetic simply meant for sealing in hydration. It has a lot to do with the lack of understanding or miseducation. I truly appreciate this video. Thank you♥️
@@HumblebeeAndMe great video Marie! I was curious...I've been trying to find those mini saucers that I have seen you use and show in your tutorials ..would you mind sharing where you purchased them please? Thank you in advance! Keep the great info coming! Have learned a lot from you!
@@morpro4u those glass bowls she uses or the almost flat glass round but slightly hollow things? The first she mentioned in a video, the second I know from the lab and it is called a hourglass.
@@morpro4u those are watch glasses. Did the translation wrong, sorry! (I am Dutch). You should be able to find them under watchglass especially from lab suppliers
Hi everyone i am 16 years old just started a skin care line and i made a mistake with my very first product i didnt balance the oils and did not melt them down that made my face scrub to oily and it leacked it was a mess , after watching many vidoes i learned research should be done and thank you for the video
My first making it, I made enough to fill a 4 Oz jar and it was SOOOOOO thick. I ended up rewhipping it and adding more liquid oils which ended up taking that one 4oz jar and spread it to three 4oz jars and I still had a little extra in the bowl
I definitely made the mistake of not realising how oily they can be and also assuming that lack of water is more hydrating. The good thing about formulating is you get to see your theories play out and then see why they don't work and that then leads to more reading and learning about truths. And I've made the big batch mistake a few times.
I'm addicted to making my own skincare products but I'm poor lol so if I come across a recipe that calls for large batches of the ingredients, my mind starts calculating the cost of replacing the little I already have and I just reduce and reduce lol
Mistake 7 : not knowing about emulsified butters. I will probably never used a whipped butter again. They just sat on my skin, Emulfied butters are the future. PERIODDDDDDDD! Great vidoe thanks sis
Wow. I wish that I had found you earlier. YES - I did all of the above. I live in a dry climate and suffer from persistent, itchy, uncomfortable dry skin and am very dissatisfied with off the shelf remedies thus the DIY formulas. Love your down to earth, common sense approach. Liked and subscribed. Thank you.
My first was a whipped body butter that turned to a weird dry/crumbly consistency. It was also greasier than I wanted so for some ungodly known reason I kept adding more and more IPM. I don't know what I was thinking 🤪🤦♀️ When I applied it to my skin it made the craziest sound like I was rubbing sandpaper pieces together, so bizarre! Can you believe I also gifted some it to a friend omg cringe! I haven't made another since. But I do like the sound of the emulsified body butter. Think I'll give it another go 😊
I just made a big 10 pound mistake today myself. The Shea Butter itself was Ah-MAZING to feel, to work with, the natural color was a very light tannish after processing that was pretty enough on it's own and didn't need anything to color it so it looks just stunning all bottled up, so what's the problem? The scent was so obnoxious it was nauseating. It wasn't bad or moldy or anything it was just over the top with scent and no product scent in the world would have helped it smell better but and I stuck with it and it's all bottled tonight but there was just no way I could sell that batch to my Customers because it flat out stinks! I also accidently got some on my coffee cup and I assure you that it tastes even worse than it smells so I can't make any lip products with it either but I came up with a brilliant plan and after a little research I solved the problem... I added a light amount of raw dried Lavender Flowers in the mix with a little Almond oil and a little Garlic Oil that I pressed & processed myself a few weeks ago for a Home Remedy and blended everything together and labeled it as Whipped Skin Cream for Dogs. I am serious! Shea Butter is 100% safe and effective for dogs skin conditions just like it is for ours. I kept it light on the Lavender which is beneficial for dogs with anxiety & sleep issues, a hint of garlic which is a great flea repellant in SMALL doses and a dab of my "secret ingredient".. too much Lavender or Garlic either one is toxic to dogs in high doses so I went way light on these ingredients but it was enough to make it smell a bit better. It's safe & effective for the pets and it's working on my dogs itchy spot already I haven't seen him digging at all since I put it on him. My point is that as long as the problem isn't harmful to anyone or you didn't get a bad quality product, there is sometimes a way to resolve your problem with a little creativity. FYI, I sent a small newsletter/poll to my current local Customers to get some feedback earlier and I got an overwhelmingly positive response that my Customers would be more than happy to pay up to $15 for a jar of an all natural chemical free safe Whipped Body Butter Product specifically formulated for their dogs and I was even asked about a product for other animals too.. I may be onto something here :) It appears that I am actually going to make profit on this obnoxious smelling batch.
I love your videos! I’m gonna read your blogs to learn more. I bought Raw unrefined shea butter to make lip balm for the first time and it smelled awful! The smell is strong and it smells like bad cheese or something . I thought the best shea butter to use was unrefined or was it because it was raw? I used like 8 gr of it and 20 gr of cacao butter but the smell of the shea butter took over. I ones before made lotion bars and used probably unrefined shea butter and cocoa butter it it smelled chocolate like which was what I wanted the lip balm to smell like.
OK, clicked this link thinking "Hope this is better than the last 10 crappy videos of people with no ACTUAL knowledge babbling".... but no... You are on point! Great information and I learned a lot! Thank you!
Happy to be a pleasant surprise :) Don't forget to check out my blog (humblebeeandme.com) as well-I've been blogging since 2011 while I’ve only been on RU-vid since about 2016, so there are a lot more formulations on the blog. The blog is also where my totally free ingredient encyclopedia and FAQ live, and they're both packed with tons of super-helpful information ❤️ Happy making!
I cannot believe your knowledge. It is just incredible. I am 64 and making my body butter for the first time! I am trying your Cocoa Butter Bars. So excited!!
I love those videos❤. The weird thing is that im soo good with the "hard" water products but im soo bad with the anhydrous products😳. I can make the best cream, serum, mask, hair mask.. But the body butters, lip balms and balms are soo much harder for me. Im definitely learning allot here 🥰.
All wonderful reminders. I happen to prefer emulsified body butters. I love the rich feel of the butter, but the significant boost of moisture I get from water and glycerin! I also love even the smallest amount of esters in mine. I notice in the winter especially, I need a great deal more water on my skin and in summer I need a touch more oil. Just what I've observed for my own skin. Thanks Marie for all the thoughtful info!
My biggest mistake was to make huge batches. To add to this, not understanding the ingredients well.. I remember thickening my body butter with bees wax.. and the final product tugged along my skin making my skin feel worser.
Regardless of whatever you make for the first time. Is best to do small batches. I learned that mustake too. I made this natural toothpaste and ended up not being good for me. Because it requires a lot of baking soda and it damaged the enamel of my tooth, and got spool sensitive, so I ended up throwing it all away. 3 bottles that I made.
Am with you siz I get extremely dry skin especially around the elbows and ankles so do most of my friends, aunties etc so like you, most of us favor oilier luxurious creams. Those who naturally have moisturized skin are lucky and shouldn't bash others.
Hi, i see you left this comment a year ago but maybe you will see this. My black neighbor asked me if I know anything about black skincare, I was trying to question her on how her skin is different than mine but she basically said "I need a lot of lotion" This lady has been a godsend to me in my personal life and I would love to make something special for her.
Omg i was number 1! And this was back in 2013 i had two young kids, I remember smothering them in the body butters after a bath🤣 their hair and skin was so soft but i hated it for myself and knew i needed to make improvements 😅
Have you derived a great formula for use on face only; that is to reduce or prevent nasolabial and also another one to be used on dry hands caused by frequent soap washing? I am in my late 40s now. I've tried many products and does not see much improvement. Thanks!
I don't like the cocobutter scent and not fond of a heavy scented shea butter. To me it smells like olives (which I love... to eat) It is just way too strong. Found this out with my first body butter. The family girls I gave this to for Christmas last year liked that chocolate scent which over powered even the shea. So, good. For me, I added peppermint EO which made it smell like a peppermint patty which was way better. My 2nd batch I did not use cocobutter and I love it!
I can relate to you when you said that your first time making body butters you made a kilo and it didn’t come out right. The other day I was making my first DIY hair butter and I used all of the ingredients I payed so much money for and then the butter did not turn out right and I didn’t know what to do or how to fix it so I ended up wasting a kilo of butter and then flushing it down the toilet. I was devastated about wasting all the product and money used to make that butter. Then I made another batch with the little bit of product I had left and it came out very oily and kept melting so that was also saddening. This video was helpful just wish I would’ve seen it sooner. Thanks.
I've been wanting to make body butter for a while, thanks for the tips! I've worried that the body butters would leave oily stains on my clothes. Can you talk about this, or point me to a past blog post? Also, I saw a question about applying with sunscreen. Is it possible to make a sunscreen body butter?
So many good tips! Made my first 50g batch yesterday and it seemed lovely, super whipped, not grainy but also stable and holding its shape! But then this morning I went to use some and it almost has like a skin on top? It’s soft underneath but not nearly as soft as it was yesterday. Where did I go wrong?
Just get a small kitchen scale just because some of the ingredients may weigh more than others… Therefore a cup or a tablespoon of one ingredients may not be equal to another. so I think it’s better to go by weight you know?
Thanks for all the info. Do you have a video of how you learned to formulate? I've been considering enrolling in a Formula Botanica course, have you heard anything about this company?
I'm SO GLAD I watched this video before I dove in! I have TBI & I'm struggling to spell your "favorite butter", there are a few possibilities in Google but not sure which it is. "Komatsu"? "Kokum"....help? Also, Do you make your own face cream?! If not what do you use? *New subscriber* you'll get to know me by the endless list of questions my brain damage comes up with😂❤❤❤
@@MissBodaciousBuster youre welcome! Did you make it yet? That ones kinda pricey, i saw a tester pack on amazon for like 5 different butters, with this one and i wannna try it too! It has murumuru too and i want to try that in lip products
Hi! Can someone help me please? My emulsified body butters always grow mould after a couple weeks or days. And I always use the right amount of preservative. Does anyone have any advice to offer please?
Thanks for the tips Marie ❤️❤️❤️. I love the idea of an emulsified body butter, and I would love to add shimmers( my highlighter basically) into mine for that ✨glow✨. I would like to know, how do I layer it with my sunscreen? should the body butter go first and then sunscreen last? seems like the heavier product(the body butter) should go last though, I'm not sure.
Which one helps with the slip? Your blog post says cetyl alcohol twice. Both for slip and to raise the melting point I’m not sure if that’s an error.. or if it’s supposed to be cetearyl alcohol
It's not a typo :) Try both, though-see what you think! And watch the deep dives I did into both cetyl & cetearyl if you haven't already :) Happy making!
I’m pretty much down packed on my ingredients supplies. But as a new and solo entrepreneur in starting my business, I can’t seem to find a vendor that is willing to supply me with 400 tubes. I was told by one that their lowest quantity is 20,000 tubes. And the other one said 10,000….I don’t want cheap clear plastic tubes, I keep trying to find a way to create my own custom bottles. I have the design format but can’t find a vendor. Do you have any suggestions as far as the bottles/tubes go. It’s not to say that in the future I wouldn’t make bigger order, I definitely will, but I just can’t seem to work that out financially while having paid for a trademark, supplies and equipment/filling machine. Would really appreciate if you could give me any insight or websites to give my inquiry to. Thank you.
I know I’m commenting under a body butter video lol, but the tubes I’m looking for are for lip treatments that I will be using shea butter etc in. Love all your videos haha!
Hi! I'm afraid that as someone who does not sell, I really cannot offer any insights/advice on having custom packaging made. I know from my background in graphic design that it is very expensive, and generally not something newer brands choose to invest in from the get-go.
Thank you for spelling cupuacu for me! I wanted to google it but had NO CLUE where to start! I kept listing to the name over and over again hoping to crack the code!
So how do you figure out a 20 to 25 gram batch. I don’t know how to Do the figuration. It’s just so confusing to me. I’m not good at picking out recipes. Four with sugar scrubs or body butters

@@morpro4u I actually already tried before asking my question here (1-2% of total formula,) 😊 and I am pretty satisfied with the finish feel on the skin (and I mean, everyone knows the benefits of oat on the skin). Its smooth... but I asked Marie if she would advice it because I am concerned about the preservation. I wonder if it will need a preservative because of colloïdal oatmeal 🤷🏽♀️
Yea so, I added just a few beeswax pellets to my first body butter a year ago and didn't realize the pellets weren't all the way melted when I refrigerated it to cool it down. Needless to say, the whole batch left wax pellets all over you wheb you used it 🤣🤣🤣 I've gotten WAAAAAAAYYYYYY better at formulating since then 🤣🤣🤣
What about hydration from the inside? Speaking of drinking water? Fact is, that if we don't drink enough water (at least 2 litres per day), than the most hydrating lotion or serums will not help a lot because the problem is from the inside out.
Hi Marie. I absolutely love your channel and thankyou for all your tips and tricks in helping us doing fantastic diy's. I just started to make creams for myself. I live in Gauteng, South Afria and our summers are very dry with cold winters. I saw on one of your blogs, you have a lotion that you made, but can you please advise me on a hydrating facecream for older women?
I just started and my first time doing it was small amount, but it turned out so hard I couldnt even press a knive in. Second time was much better, it turned out really great. Im in love with my first made body butter. My boyfriend loved the smell of nuts in it. He said that he would recommend it to his workfriends, who are working in construction. Because he already love it so much that his hands were little softer turn before and that he never experienced this before. So im already exited to do more. Im also a webdesigner and making my webshop already. That is how excited I am about it. So Thanks, this kind of wisdom really helps me with my process! ❤
Hey .thanks for the video..am planning to start a body butter business..which butter is best to use.. refined or unrefined butter..coz I don't want the smell to be irritating
Thanks for sharing your videos, Marie! I enjoy watching your tutorials. About the oil is superior and water is not mentality, that's not me 😁 In my case, I just don't know how to work with preservatives and so I skip formulations that require water. I don't have access to preservatives mentioned in most DIY videos that even if I want to try the recipe shared by a creator, I end up just watching the tutorial and then find some other recipe with no water and make that.
I need help. I want to make an emulsified body butter. How do i know how much water i need. I also want to add glycerin but I don’t know how much water is needed
I'm afraid that's a great big "it depends" :) I recommend watching my deep dive into Glyceryl Stearate (and) PEG-100 Stearate + my video on spreadsheets to get started! Happy making :)
Hi Marie thanks for the information shared. However am looking forward to using cocoa butter, mango butter avocado butter and almond oil. What should be my measurements for a little batch as a beginner.
I'm not ready to add water because I am not comfortable with the preservative ratio. I not good with math. Maybe later this year I will experiment with water.
I wish i had found this before i tried my first batch. I used Shea and mango butter , jojoba, grapeseed and coconut oil. Added arrowroot but it was still greasy so i added more. I did whip it but it turned out like refrigerated butter, not fluffy. Sure it melts but I expected it to be softer. So i added more of the oils and now its greasy again. I thought it had gotten hard because i put too much arrowroot powder in it but i dont have any more.
I’m an absolute newbie. I found your channel searching ingredients from a label of a fantastic (for me) body butter that was light, non greasy, absorbed well with a light non objectionable fragrance. I assume it can’t be equal parts of all ingredients listed. I would have loved to find the cook and buy it from her/him, but no amount of searching has yielded any results.
Is this just me or is this not common sense about hydration and applying moisturizer when you get out of the bathtub, shower or after washing your face? I was taught this from birth…
Another mistake I've made is waiting until the last minute to make a dozen or more Christmas gifts. Mine don't come out as well when I rush the process.
Hello dear sis. Would like your say on preservatives on our butters we prepare to the market, is it a necessity that without it the product goes bad, please advise
If you end up with a grainy product can you reheat and let it cook again? Just not with the fridge this time 🤷♀️ Or how do you fix that mistake after it’s made?
I had a scent problem. Git fine product and wuth its iwn natural scent and gave an extra scent to it what made it terrible stinky 🙈. I tried a honey cream and felt it became gready, like with small pieces in it. I tried to warm it up once again, but nope. The oroblem is i used fresh honey and could reheat over 40 degrees. I would loose all the healing power of the product. 😩
Girl! I am you decades ago! I did the EXACT THING AND tried fixing 1 lb of a shea coconut oil mix! Totally stuck with a foot greasy year supply of just awful stuff! Thank you for the tips! 😢
My blend is staying liquid, i started with equal parts butter and oil but after staying liquid i doubled the butter thinking i had to much oil but its still liquid the next day...any advice?
Is it okay to use diffuser oils in your body butters just to add a little fragrance? Also, which butters should be used; raw, refined or unrefined? Please help!
Hi! I always link to places to purchase all the ingredients for my formulations in the free partner blog post, which is linked in the description box below all my videos ❤️ So, if you're watching one of my formulation videos, scroll down and click for links. Sometimes those links break because they're always off-site links, or sometimes the store I've linked to isn't in your country. That's why I also have a giant page of places to shop all over the world, which you can find here: www.humblebeeandme.com/resources/. That page doesn't have every country in the world, but it does contain all the online stores I know about. If your country isn't listed, that's because I don't know about any online stores in your country. You could try looking for a local Facebook group for people who like making soap & other cosmetics-they may be able to recommend places to shop. And for some more discussion on ingredients, I recommend these FAQs: www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/why-dont-you-only-use-ingredients-that-are-easily-available-globally/ www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/what-ingredients-should-i-purchase-when-getting-started/ www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/is-there-one-place-i-can-buy-everything/ www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/why-do-you-use-so-many-new-fancy-hard-to-get-ingredients/
My first I'm not gonna lie, I nailed it. The 2nd time same recipe different results😡 I was so mad! The difference was I didn't let it cool before putting in the fridge so I had to start over and it worked.👍🙏🤞🤞🤞🤞😂😂
Water should not be used as a skin moisturizer. Fats are essential for skin hydration. Using water is not necessary. I just moisturize as soon as I get out of the shower. But this is a great video. Very true about the cooking.
If you're moisturizing as soon as you're getting out of the shower, you are moisturizing with water-the water from your shower :) Hydration is defined as "the process of causing something to absorb water." You simply can't have hydration without water. Both oil and water are important for skin health :)
Hey! Can I get you Ig so I can call you? I was wondering what could go in my Raw cocoa butter more oil like and disable better? I have 10 lbs of raw cocoa butter.
Thanks for the tips you shared; however as some of the comments indicated I think oiliness is a personal preference. I tried using arrowroot but one of my customers said she prefers it only as she has dry skin!
Omg i just now found you after i think I did it wrong. Mixed mango cocoa unrefined with some jojoba oil whipped and it was silky smooth. Its how now cooled and again rock hard. How do I keep it whipped and soft? Please help
