Finally, after 3 long years, we can return to Canada via the Remote Area Border Crossing (RABC) program! We head out on a 5-Day backcountry canoe fishing trip to Quetico Provincial Park in search of Lake Trout for just two days before the season closes. On October 1st, we continue on to fish and explore forest fire burned areas of the park that were ablaze one year ago.
Part one is our first full day in the park and we have the second half of the day to target these Canadian lake sharks. The wind makes fishing very difficult on the main body of the lake, but we hide from the wind behind a peninsula and fish a very productive pinch point chocked full of lakers.
Day one is more than we could have hoped for with more than a dozen lake trout caught, some bonus smallmouth bass, and a gorgeous sunset to end the day. A hearty lake trout and venison dinner cooked over the fire, beneath the Quetico sky filled with stars, was the perfect end to a near-perfect day in the park.

I woke up this morning with a notification that a new video from you was up, and I knew it would be a good day! :) Thanks for the work you put into these videos, and thanks for taking us "city boys" who dream of life in the backcountry along with you on your exploits :)

That is great news! A little sunshine on a cold dark winter day. Thanks for the support! I love putting these together and will continue to do so. PS: I was a city boy once, too. Follow your dreams!

Awesome series! If you don’t mind me asking; how do you portage with all of your sonar and camera equipment without crushing the unit and knocking the lithium ion batteries around?

Thanks!! My kit is actually pretty small, only weighing about 6.5lbs including the lithium ion battery. Here’s a video with the rundown of my setup: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_e5RpiVbqQo.htmlsi=HNSk7WRK8lVLhgNU

Another great video! 👍. What make of drift chute/anchor are you using? Did you like it? It looks like it got in the way when landing some of the walleye. Recommendation? Thank you. -Randy

Thank you!! I love using the drift sock, it’s invaluable for slowing down the drift and stabilizing the boat. I’ve since shortened the leash so the fish don’t get caught up when landing them. I can’t remember the brand, but I bought it at fleet farm for like $40. It’s the smallest motorboat sized they offered (12-16’).

@@therealfarwater Thank you for the reply. Much appreciated. I guess the question I should have asked is your drift sock 18", 20", 24" wide or some other width? I suspect a solo vs tandem canoe will react differently along with the wind speed and canoe make that will factor into the drift sock performance. I know from experience that a Wenonah Spirit ll catches more wind than a Souris River Quetico 17. And to me there is a safety trade off in how slow you want the canoe to be vs having some drift sock give in case you get hit be a large wave. I am thinking an 18" or 20" for a Quetico 17. Your thoughts?

For this video, mostly my GoPro 10. My main camera is a Panasonic GH5 but I don’t use that while in the boat, just around camp

I may have mentioned this to you before but get yourself an ultra light bent kayak paddle from Werener. They often have factory blemish for sale. You may have mentioned you are kind of a purists with canoe paddling.
@therealfarwater
@therealfarwater 7 месяцев назад
These are Wenonah carbon paddles that only weigh 13oz! I’ve debated the double blade, but I’m definitely a purist in this respect. I’ve gotten very comfortable with a canoe paddle and love the art of the complex strokes
@golfish8589
@golfish8589 7 месяцев назад
I bet you would gain at least 1 mph . And paddling in all wind directions will be much easier. Find someone you can borrow a double blade from and report back. I told "Lost Lakes" to make the switch. He had already purchased one. It just hadn't appeared in a video yet. He turned me on to the Amok hammock system . So so comfortable. Even my stubborn brother likes sleeping in them

Yeah-using barbless hooks can be frustrating, although I was thankful the one time the back treble on my vibrato ended up in my palm. Is your jigging rod just a medium action?
@therealfarwater
@therealfarwater 7 месяцев назад
Medium light extra fast. It is my walleye jigging rod. I have a heavy bass baitcasting rod for jigging and casting larger baits.

I’ve enjoyed all your videos, thanks for taking the time to make them . i think I’m ready to try a sea anchor. Are you happy with the one you have, who makes it and what size do you suggest for a tandem canoe? This video is the first time I’ve seen leadcore line being used. Is this a regular part of your arsenal for trout? Thanks.
@therealfarwater
@therealfarwater 7 месяцев назад
@@markvonhagke4978 thanks for the support! I can’t remember the brand of drift sock, but I got it at fleet farm for like $40. It’s designed for small motorboats 12-16’ and was the smallest size I could find. We don’t anchor and fish anymore, the drift sock is perfect for drift jigging walleye and trout. The leadcore was a failed experiment, I would not suggest using it in the BWCA/quetico. I got too many snags and ended up breaking off multiple times on this trip. I use in-line trolling weights, anywhere from 1-3oz.

@therealfarwater

This weather was near perfect-we might have found higher concentrations of shallower fish if the water temps were 5 degrees lower, but air temps were ideal in the high 50s and low 60s. This was after the Ranger station had closed for the year so we were able to use the Basswood River EP
@steves2154
@steves2154 7 месяцев назад
Interesting - did not know you could do that. How did you pay for your permit and get the self-issue one? Opens up possibilities for sure!
@therealfarwater
@therealfarwater 7 месяцев назад
@@steves2154 please don’t take my word for it, consult an outfitter before you travel outside of the open remote ranger station season. It’s my understanding that you can mail in a permit ahead of time or fill one out at a crossing point that offers self service, like Prairie Portage. Bring a credit card, pretty sure only Visa or MC, and fill one out similarly to a day use for BWCA. This, of course, is after you’ve gotten all the other documentation (RABC, Ontario fishing license, ontario outdoors card, passport/passport card). I am not sure if these ‘out of season’ permits are available online, again, call them or work through and outfitter to make sure you’re covered.

No worries; am dialed in on it... looking forward to seeing more big lakers, and to open water for paddling...hopefully that's less than 60 days away.
