I am obsessed with all things Boundary Waters, Quetico and Backcountry Fishing and canoe camping. I love to share what I have learned and teach others the glory of backcountry canoe travel, camping and fishing. There is definitely a lack of information out there for those who seek to chase trophy fish in the backcountry on foot or from a canoe, and I plan to fill that void.
My goal is to make these extremely remote locations accessible to others through the sharing of my own personal experiences exploring these undeveloped spaces. Please subscribe to my channel if you are interested in learning more about the pursuit of wild spaces and the feisty fish that inhabit these untouched locations.
I really enjoy watching your videos! I am bringing my nephew for our first ever trip to the Boundary Waters next week. 9/22-9/29. We put in on Snowbank and take out on Lake One. I planned to base camp on Insula and day trip to Alice and Fishdance. Do you have any advice on where to locate fish /techniques since we won’t have any electronics? Any other lakes on that route that you really like? Thank you!
@@ryanfarrar9863 thank you for watching! Right now, I would look for weedlines and moving water for fish. Wherever you can find green weeds, fish will be nearby. Insula and Alice are both fantastic multi-species lakes worth fishing. The water temps will likely be dropping in the next week or so, so trolling deep diving rapalas (15-20’) should be effective, too. Good luck!
Really liking all your fishing vids, but this one is a double-like! Just bought a new Northwind 18 since my daughter is getting interested! Can’t wait. Already have a NW Solo.
I really appreciated your 'timestamps' of the trip. Planning a similar trip along the same route and it helped get my head around the distances and times for a duo.
@@PurpleFerret you’re welcome! Be careful using us as an example…we move A LOT quicker than your average duo. Most people stop at Agnes after a long first day. Most people also don’t start before sunup…
@@therealfarwater yeah we're not as experienced - and while we intend on starting a bit before sunrise we're planning to stop on Agnes and break the trip into Lac La Croix up so we can fish Agnes & Boulder River a bit before heading into boulder bay
@@PurpleFerret excellent! Sounds like a great plan. If the fishing is slow on Agnes, I’d move on to LLC quickly-tons of great campsites and excellent fishing. The water is always a couple of degrees cooler there, too, so if Agnes is slow it may help change the bite/fish mood. I was in Quetico this week and the water is warm and the blueberries are popping. Find moving water and you’ll find fish. Have a blast! Wear your lifejackets!
@@dannyb6968 for this trip, we traveled up Moose Lake, Newfound and Sucker to Prairie Portage where we paid to get a tow up and over into Basswood. You can also head in via fall lake and do the wheeled portages into Pipestone and Jackfish Bays but you need a lightweight boat with portage wheels because there isn’t a truck portage to carry you over. If you’re interested, I’d call Vosburg’s on Moose lake, they can set it up for you.
Use a Rapala Deep Tail Dancer in the Purpledescent color. Purple is the last color to disappear in the color spectrum. When fishing deep, if the fish can still see the lure they will hit it.
Hey I'm just curious what locator battery combo you guys are using for canoe trips. Id like to get some sort of sonar/gps combo for pack trips but am have no experience with the smaller units
Another great video! 👍. What make of drift chute/anchor are you using? Did you like it? It looks like it got in the way when landing some of the walleye. Recommendation? Thank you. -Randy
Thank you!! I love using the drift sock, it’s invaluable for slowing down the drift and stabilizing the boat. I’ve since shortened the leash so the fish don’t get caught up when landing them. I can’t remember the brand, but I bought it at fleet farm for like $40. It’s the smallest motorboat sized they offered (12-16’).
@@therealfarwater Thank you for the reply. Much appreciated. I guess the question I should have asked is your drift sock 18", 20", 24" wide or some other width? I suspect a solo vs tandem canoe will react differently along with the wind speed and canoe make that will factor into the drift sock performance. I know from experience that a Wenonah Spirit ll catches more wind than a Souris River Quetico 17. And to me there is a safety trade off in how slow you want the canoe to be vs having some drift sock give in case you get hit be a large wave. I am thinking an 18" or 20" for a Quetico 17. Your thoughts?
Awesome series! If you don’t mind me asking; how do you portage with all of your sonar and camera equipment without crushing the unit and knocking the lithium ion batteries around?
Thanks!! My kit is actually pretty small, only weighing about 6.5lbs including the lithium ion battery. Here’s a video with the rundown of my setup: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_e5RpiVbqQo.htmlsi=HNSk7WRK8lVLhgNU
Thanks for watching! I am taking a big Quetico trip this year-May 9-22nd to chase lake trout and walleye, mostly. We’ve had a warm winter with very little precipitation-believe it or not all lakes have been ice free for at least a week now!
Pretty impressive! Beautiful day to be out on the water. Your comment about being on "a 450-rod portage in between some lake and some lake" made me smile! Which did you enjoy more that day, the swim or the lunch?!? Thanks for sharing videos of your trips.
Gotta be on big water to find them this size: LLC, Basswood, maybe Knife. Use big baits: spoons, tubes, crankbaits. Best chance is probably to paddle around with a sonar and sharp shoot them in deeper water
A few more years and we will be making Minnesota our final destination! I've never been to the Boundary Waters but have already fallen in love! Cheers and enjoy!
You took a very long way from Rebecca Falls to Curtain Falls. I was trying to follow along with my McKenzie #29 and couldn’t. You may have added some additional portages in your journey.
We intentionally took a detour through some lakes we hadn’t seen before to check out the fire damage. That took us past curtain to Rebecca where we stayed on night, then back to Crooked past Curtain again…sorry, I know it was confusing, I just didn’t want to announce the name of the lake we had spectacular lake trout fishing the first two days of the trip
Awesome videos! Love bwca! Ive been going every year for the past 20. Would love to see how your camp is set up, and cooking. Its always interesting how everyone has there one way of doing things.
Thank you for watching and thank you for the feedback! I plan on doing a lot more filming of "camp life" in the future. I got a really nice tripod I am excited to bring along and get more comfortable shooting footage with my main camera, rather than just the gopro footage from the boat. Here's a tutorial for how we cook our trout: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9509EhIk3J4.html
Hey FarWater, I've been watching your videos for a while now and really enjoy them. I spent a few years in northern Minnesota when I was a kid and my family took multiple canoe trips to Quetico. We launched at Pickerel Lake and would hit Bisk, Rawn, and Art lakes, catching walleye, northerns, and smallies. Those are some of my favorite childhood memories. Anyway, thanks for recording your adventures - I've enjoyed watching you fish the north country.
Thank you for watching and sharing your love of Quetico! I hadn't visited the park until I moved up here in 2019 and I'm absolutely hooked (pun intended)! I've got a lot more Quetico content coming your way!
A simple drift sock designed for motorboats. This is the smallest size I could find-designed for motorboats 12-14’ in length. It has been a game changer for us, much more effective than an anchor and infinitely easier to use

Why did you not use entry point 1?. Shorter distance canoing and shorter portaging distances? Nice video but not sure it would be worth the effort for so few days. Still being there is all that counts though. Love your videos though. I have learned a lot too! Going in June. Can hardly wait.
EP 1 is Trout Lake-I think you meant EP 16 Moose River North?? It’s not always about taking the easiest route. We’d never been to any of the lakes between Pawnees and Agnes, so we wanted to see those before hitting up Oyster for lakers. Our trips are often ambitious and intended to cover miles and haul packs over difficult portages, which we find can be equally rewarding
