If you love Behind the Scenes Photography videos.. then, this is one to watch!
The BEST trip of my life. This is the most insane video I have ever made. Over 130 hours of editing, finally done! This is a MUST WATCH! Let me give you the full backstory…
Two months ago, I woke up, grabbed my cell phone off the nightstand and was on Instagram (as I generally do in the mornings). I saw a feed of images that were taken in some amazing locations, and I admit... I was envious. I am sure you all can relate with that 😊 So, rather then being bitter or feeling like I am “stuck” with what I have, I took to my Instagram “story” and made a series of videos expressing some ideas for some styled shooting out west in the desert. To my surprise I got a very nice response and had one of my former brides DM me expressing interest in going and modeling her amazing Berta wedding dress (one of the top designers in the world). This was HUGE! From there, I contacted a friend that I know very well out in Las Vegas who is a model, and a very successful business woman. She was able to share my plans on her IG story, and instantly I received DM’s from local models who were interested in working with me. These were some of the top models out in Las Vegas, including former Miss Nevada! Next, I decided to reach out to a few people who have expressed interest in attending a workshop of mine. I got two guys from Canada (Peter & Tom) and they were on board and helped cover a little of the cost involved as this was now becoming a pretty big trip. Shortly after this, I shot the Profoto B10 Review Video (see my other video linked above) and my good friend Maria who was the model in that video expressed interest and also wanted to go to Las Vegas and shoot with us! So, she came too! I called my good buddy Joe in Vermont for production / video help, and he and his wife were also down to come. His wife Whitney found an AMAZING makeup artist out there, and she instantly became a part of this dream team too! All in all we had 5 amazing models (4 are featured in the video), and 4 days of back to back shooting from dawn to dusk. I rented a big Air B&B we split the cost up, got a few big SUV’s and rocked out what was one of the most epic weeks of our lives! It was constant laughter, fun, shooting, learning, dinners & drinks.. none of us wanted to go home. I would be lying to you if I told you I did not crack a tear at the airport on the way home.
So sit back, remove all distractions and come along with us on this truly incredible trip! You will love it, and may even learn something. If you are interested in coming along with us for next years trip.. shoot me a DM on Instagram. That’s the best way to get a hold of me.
Thank you!

Such an epic experience Travis! This video is insane!! I love reliving each of these shoots and hearing your commentary. From the perspective of the student, Travis is an amazing instructor, great guy all around and super knowledgeable. If you’re considering one of his workshops, don’t hesitate, take action. You won’t regret it.

Great video. I discovered it because I noticed a comment you made on another site asking about whether permits were required at the Nelson Dry Lake. I am assuming the shots you took with the flowing dress and fabric, after the shoot at the ghost town, were at the lake bed. I live in Phoenix and have been to the ghost town and obviously driven past the lake bed. Anyway, I am curious, did you need any kind of permit to shoot there?
@travisharrisphotography
@travisharrisphotography 4 года назад
YES! We needed to contact the town of Henderson, NV and get a permit. It was around $250 for the day.

@travisharrisphotography
@travisharrisphotography 4 года назад
Thanks so much. The starburst effect happens when you have the lens stopped down a ton. So you can try f/16 as a good starting point. It's different on every lens, best with ones that are wide.

Hey Dean! Thanks man! yeah, I know. lol. Truthy, if I went back.. I would prob. not get one for the flat bed area. But, the Valley Of fire there is no way around it. Plus, the other thing.. is because I am on RU-vid, and people always want to cause problems.. if I were ever to be reported, I would need to prove that I had a permit. This is the other reason I got them.

I love watching you work with bright desert light and often a single B10 - it gives hope to us poor shooters w/o a full crew and a generator!! What lens are you working with when you are close to the models- fairly wide it seems (and I love shooting with my 17-35 - not everything has to be an 85 from further back!).
@travisharrisphotography

Hi Travis! Great video and very informative. You have photographed in HSSL, I think and on the lenses was a polarizing filter? Recently I own two B10 Plus, but I have no experience with HSSL yet. If the flashes (do you both operate in HSSL?) Are operated, then the Akus will not have a higher power consumption. Best regards from Munich, Charly
@travisharrisphotography
@travisharrisphotography 4 года назад
Hi Charly, A little confused on the question.. but, I will try. If you use HSS than yes, both lights would be effected, as this is activated on the remote. But, yes, HSS draws more wear and tear on the flash tube for sure.. so I avoid this at all costs.

Hi Travis, beautiful shoots and great locations, thank you for sharing. 2 questions: which filter do you use on your lenses during those shootings ? And I often feel not to have enough power with my 2 B10, especially in HSS, and I’ll have to bring the flashes often to near to the subject for my taste, any suggestions? So the permits were only for video purposes right? I've always wanted to go to Nelson's ghost town but everytime I want to go, my plans end up changing :(
@travisharrisphotography
@travisharrisphotography 5 лет назад
For Nelson's you don't need any permit. Just pay hourly. It was more costly for me, because I had a large group with me. But if it's just you and a model it's not much at all. The permits were required for the valley of fire, and the dry lake bed. This is where the cost and hassle came in.
@bsm1th99
@bsm1th99 5 лет назад
@@travisharrisphotography I'm surprised the valley of the fire and dry lake bed required permits. One of these days, you need to travel here to Arizona. Lots of awesome locations. I could even set you up with some local models and MUA"s.
@travisharrisphotography
@travisharrisphotography 5 лет назад
@@bsm1th99 Yeah, the Valley Of Fire is the most strict place I have ever seen. There was ZERO chance to walk around there with any type of pro setup. Rangers patrol everywhere, and they did in fact check on us during the shooting. The Dry Lake Bed would be possible maybe without a permit, but.. when your flying across the country for all this.. LOL, you dont want to take any chances. Also.. FStoppers did a post last year of a photographer that was sued for posting content at the Valley Of Fire and Red Rocks without a permit, and they forced him to take it down! So, this can haunt you eve after the fact too! Definitely would love to check out AZ!!

The only thing that worries me about choosing a B10 with Magnum over a B1 with a 5ft octabox is the uneven skin lighting between the upper and lower body of the subject as the magnum doesn't appear to throw a wide area of light. Tough call to be honest.
@travisharrisphotography
@travisharrisphotography 5 лет назад
I'm very happy with the results. A 5ft Octa is not practical for most work. Even in a b1 it sucks way too much power. I would never use a modifier like that for shots like this. But with that said you may like that look. If you want to use this I would consider the ELB 1200 from Elinchrom.
@charbelb6661
@charbelb6661 5 лет назад
@@travisharrisphotography I've used an ad600 with 5ft octa in bright Dubai sun with no issues, comparable power from a b1 I'd assume
@travisharrisphotography
@travisharrisphotography 5 лет назад
@@charbelb6661 yeah you will see in this video Peter and Tom used that for there shots. It's got a little more punch I guess. But the b10s were also perfect in my shots. Part of this is the fact I don't personally like big soft light when I'm using the hard sun. I like to match hard sun with hard mods. I also love that sharp contrast and pop I get. That's all. For sure I would go for a elb 1200 if you want this kind of power with a big 5ft bank.
