5 Easy No-Solder Earring Designs: A Silversmithing Tip

This tip shows 5 different easy silver earring styles that are economical to make. There are tons of variations as far as designs for these go. These are simple to make, so are a suitable beginner project. The materials for these can vary, but for these ones, I used mostly 18 gauge round wire, some 20 gauge round wire, 18 gauge and 22 gauge pieces of scrap silver sheet. The overhead to make these is low, so you can make some decent profit by hitting that lower price point for your customers.
I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. Thank you very nice video and a quick and easy way to make some earrings no solder ,also given me a idea how to use up some of my beads that have laid dormant since doing silver smithing and other bits I could use ,thanks again from the Uk 😊

Thanks for this video. You'll probably laugh when I say why. I'm currently living with a demonic dog (actually very fearful). Goes berserk at any unusual noise, as in: hammering.... soldering....latest problem was when I stepped on her squeaky toy by accident. That was a BAD one. (We are working on training her and getting her evaluated.) Anyway, the video sparked ideas for variations on those non-soldered earrings, so thank you very much!!

Hi Chad! I am noticing that your content is very fun, creative, and interesting, all that good stuff, and very commerce centric. I am going to lovingly butt in with a thought: There is a glut of "hand-made" jewelry out in the world, especially since the pandemic, which reflects a lack of experience. I am a strong proponent of learning how to do a craft well before attempting to turn that creative skill into a job. I feel that it does no one any favors - especially the customer, to offer unskilled work to buyers that reasonable want and should receive skilled work. Long story short, I encourage beginners to get some skills before even thinking of selling. It's an integrity sort of philosophy. Practice practice practice! Plus, it's FUN to make just for the sake of creating. Why rush into unloading those cool just made pieces? 🌺 The fastest way to turn a joy into a slog is to make it a job. Ps. Love these earrings!

That is a fair point and well put. On the other hand, one of the factors that helped to encourage my growth was knowing people wanted to buy my creations, and so I strove to make improvements in what I was producing. I think it’s fair to say one shouldn’t sell their work until they have reached a level of competence where they are producing a quality piece of jewelry that will stand up to long term wear and tear. I am a big proponent of making things just for your own well-being and mental health as well. There will be some crossover content to appeal to both audiences, beginners as well as experienced sorts looking for sales ideas. This is a good conversation to have. I agree insofar as one should ensure that anything one sells is “fit for purpose” In other words all burrs filed down, earwires smoothed off, stones securely set, and all solder joints are secure. Once you reach that stage tho, I think selling is a good thing. It gets you out of the “maker” mindset, and into the buying publics mindset, which are two very different things. You also get to meet the people that are wearing your pieces which is usually huge fun. You can also advise when you sell in person. I had a lady looking at my other line(which is crochet and tatted jewellery) She was very taken with a pair in a merlot coloured thread but kept shying away. I discovered by a bit of gentle enquiry that she thought they were different sizes…..I was able to show her that they really weren’t and advised that sometimes crochet pieces will do that and how to fix it. She bought two pairs. I actually really enjoy selling….my only issue right now is that the cost of materials is skyrocketing, and although I really don’t want to price my pieces out of the market my hand is being forced.
