Making A Filigree Sphere: A Silversmithing Tip

This video tip shows me making a sterling silver filigree sphere from 20 gauge silver round wire. I could see making earrings, pendants, or even rings featuring these. Making one of these is a little challenging, so this would be more appropriate for someone with significant soldering experience. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder with the exception of the last solder joint. My flux is My-T-Flux.

You always hit my Jewelry spot. I love making really detailed pieces like this because I started my jewelry making with wire wrapped pieces, which takes a lot of attention and detail. Beautiful piece as always. I LIKE CHAD.

Very nice work. Not sure if someone already suggested it, but you might want to use filigree solder (powder): you can place ALL of the little pieces and then solder them all at once. Much easier and faster too.

WoW- this is really a great piece Chad, A lot of soldering but worth it. Again a good one to practice my pick soldering on, sill haven't mastered it yet, I seem to go back to wire solder. BUT I keep trying, you just always make it look so easy. I'm also glad to see you are growing in subscribers. When I found you, I think It was around 400+. You are a very patient teacher with an easy voice to listen to and keep interested IN. My creations are more South Western but I always love new ideas. Thank-You for being you.

Love this, may be easier to create a frame to be consistent. Just don’t solder onto the frame! 😏 So many designs opened up with this idea. Thank you

Very neat idea ! I think your the king of pick soldering ! I hate using a pick so i tens to cut my solder in thin strips and use it like wire. I find it easier but it doesnt always work. Beautiful sterling ball !

That’s fun :). I’d try it if I had a dapping block but they’re ridiculously expensive here. Nice heat control too, and tbh I can imagine a fair few blobs whilst soldering that if I tried it. I’m kinda notorious for melting fine wires, which is odd given that a lot of my jewellery is made of tiny pieces lol . Never been known for doing things the easy way lol

Occasionally I realize I’ve been doing something the hard way for years and have a “duh” moment and find a new way. Not sure if my way of doing this is the easiest:)
@gregbesch773
@gregbesch773 Год назад
You can easily make wooden dapping blocks with carving chisels, and if you don't have carving chisels you can easily make your own from old metal tools, a torch, and files...

Very cool, Chad! 😎 I wonder if a frame (circle) would be a helpful way to set up this kind of piece; placing all your pieces inside. A tool maker I know of makes and sells a set of frames (pricey, though) made of titanium. I've had great success with just using some copper sheet I had to make whatever frame I want - and just make sure it gets nice and dirty and oxidized so nothing sticks to it. Its a cheap workaround instead of buying the latest expensive new gadgets. Of course, sheet titanium is cheap, too. Great project once again - refreshing. 🌺

Hi Chad 😊 I love this design! 😍 I was wondering if I could put a sapphire in the middle and then solder closed? I know sapphire can be heat treated, so I was thinking it would be ok. My partner just brought a sapphire mine at the Willows Queensland 🇦🇺 so I was thinking of designs that would work with the lower quality stone! Any advice would be appreciated! 🙏🇦🇺😁
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing 9 месяцев назад
Hello Natalie:). I haven’t had a lot of success with exposing stones to that much heat, but I know some people even cast stones in place, although I think those are synthetics. You might try one of the online jewelry forums to see if someone has some experience with that and can better advise you.
