I'm 54 and bought a 2024 YZ 125 and a 2024 Husqvarna TC 250, and a 1991 Kawasaki KX 500 and it's very scary. That's why I got the Husky and Y-zinger. I love them all.
I hear you there mate, same age , got a Sherco SE125, the Yam was my 2nd choice, with all these tuning tips , makes me think i should have got a YZ like yourself . 125s are real 2t fun though. Cant stop riding it.
That is music to my ears,have not rode in 20 years just up and decided to put a depo down on the 2021 yz 125 at 43 and was all starting to second guess myself lol. Cant wait till it arrives and I can knock the rust off and get back in the groove.
Interesting to hear so many people getting into 125s, especially the YZs. I bought a brand new 2019, added a GYTR exhaust, VForce 4 reed, VHM head, GET ignition and taper bored 38mm Keihin with STIC and it goes very very well. I love the thing.
threw on a fmf system and vforce reeds and my 2016 rips hard, best bike to learn on that's for sure true, really helps me excel my skills to different levels!
Why you need is a 38 Keihen air Striker and a STIC metering block. No joke it will make your bike an animal. You won't believe the gains that you will pick up. Anyone I know that has used it on there two stroke says they won't ride their bike without it
2 strokes sound amazing. 4 strokes sound like huge ATVs like farmers use. 2 strokes are Eddie Van Halen, George Lynch, and Randy Rhoads. 4 strokes are Jack White of the brown stripes aka The Skid Marks. No comparison. Steve

i had 2004 yz 125... great fun.... but i also found i was kinda always between gears either too low or too high... and always needed to change up on the ramp which was very un-nerving.. mid range is the cake for the junior clubman like myself... too fat and old now...good vid
I've had countless bikes over years an years 250s 450s 200s 300s an more but I keep going back to a 125 lol 😆 If you can ride a 125 2 stroke well than you can ride any motorcycle. My Dream bike is a 2006 rm 125

got a yz with the VHM head, v-force reeds, full fmf pipe system and a couple of other things like a new piston, ordering a new lectron billetron 38 carb, it’s definitely gonna rip
I just bought a 2001 yz125 today and I'm terrified of it. It's so freakin fast! I dont know what alls been done to it but it'll do a wheelie with no clutch poppin!
Without spending a dime on aftermarket parts, you can really wake up a late model YZ125 by gasket matching the cylinder and cases and, reducing the compression squish height to around 1.0mm
which squish measurement the VHM head have ? (lowered compression one), does it value to buy one or just ajust the squish an OEM head for amateur riding ?
love the feed back from nev, and i could listen to roland all day, but come on,if roland wants to give me a GYTR kit for a yam 125 ill do 1.20s all day around that track with that doughnut timing it on a phone , at least use a lap timer to get some sort of accurate timming otherwise you could be going backwards , i could tell by rolands face he might aswell be pissing in the wind
Have you guys looked into Ceramic bearing in the crank and transmission. Not to mention the wheels. Call WWB World Wide Bearings in the US, Cedar Grove, NJ. Big power gains.
YZs are popular because Yamahas are the shit. Period. Motul 800 is good but, Klotz supertech is absolutely the most amazing premix for pump gas. I run Motul with c16, but with pump gas at my altitude it smokes more than i like and doesn't feel as consistent as klotz. I have a 2018 yz250 with a 300cc big bore kit, hot crank, weisco high compression piston with top secret ring specs, pro circuit works expansion chamber with a r304 silencer, vforce reeds, ported and polished head by me (this is my 12th yz250 and im a BMW mechanic by trade so i know what im doing) and a bigger mikuni carburetor. I ride anywhere from 3700-5700 feet above sea level, i race the 30 and over pro class, im 6'4 240 pounds, and i run her EXACTLY at 36:1. The thing is a monster. I own a 2012 yz450 as well and my 2 stroke hangs right with it through 3rd then i click 4th gear and start walking away from the thumper.

How's the durability of the bike with those mods? I have a 2008 yz125 and want to clean up the power with more bottom torque, over rev would be nice also
Lol...... Brilliant video.... 125 ed banger i absolutely loved my 2 stroke days and their way more excitable than 4 strokes...... Unfortunately now at the ripe old age 48 ive turned my bk on 2strokes and become a traitor now i ride a crf250r i almost hate to say it but i love it far less hard lol
Very interesting video. I really like this kind of testing and Nev is an awesome rider to do it. I have one question. I assume that there was a bit more mods done to those Mikuni carbs than just only needles, main jets and pilot jets? Many Mikuni TMX 38 carbs needs a throttle slide mod on the intake side and some main jet feeding mods (drilling four holes to float chamber emptying plug groove). At least my Husqvarna TC 250 2018 with this same 38 mm Mikuni TMX got very good results from these two mods and correct jetting. For some strange reason these two simply mods are required and not done by factory if you want that your bike runs great with Mikuni TMX 38. For example carb float chamber has those holes already, but for some strange reason Husqvarna decided to fit a plug without those main jet feeding holes.
Awesome video. Have you guys done/ can you do a similar video for the yz250? Most of the videos out there on the yz250 take a shit heap, chuck some parts at it and make it look new. There aren't many modification videos out there. I'd love to see a test on a 265cc kit or long rod kits or anything but making a clapped out 250 look fresh.. cheers mate.
Send it to a good engine builder who can port it and set up the head for more top end, and spend a good amount of time getting the jetting dialed in. Keep fresh tires on it and if you want to spend the money on a pipe and reeds they will help, but you’ll get much more from jetting it right and porting it for more top end.
@@mossoconnor4417 I have a few yz250s and an X. The yz would be a great bike if it could pull stock gearing. Ive been toying with the idea of running the x' 3rd gear and the x' 4th used as a 5th on the yz.. that gap between 2nd and 3rd on a yz is a pain and 5th tops out a bit fast. The yz would the the best bike with a shorter 3rd and a 6th gear.. I have all the bits(reeds, pipes, flywheels, jets, heads, sprockets, seats and foot peg mounts) i have a good set up but havnt yet nailed the sweet spot all round. Hence the thought of a 265 kit.. i like the X too, but it takes a bit of work to wind her up. Maybe, 295 kit the x and port the snot out of the yz...
Jared Healey Honestly you don’t really need to go up in displacement, the stock porting is all just midrange hit and you can get so much from some top end porting and a good head set up. I don’t really know much about modding transmissions but I totally agree, a 6th gear would be freakin awesome. Always what I loved about my yz125, even with a nice low first because of the sixth gear it was still pretty fast. I’ve always felt that the stock gearing is a pain, if final drive is set up for top speed the lower gears are a pain and it gets a bit gappy, and if you gear it low to cover the lower gears you just run through them to quick I think with more top end and maybe even a flywheel weight to make it hold each gear a little longer and not spin and rev out to fast it might make up for it being a bit gappy with tall gearing. With more usable overrev you’ll be going faster and probably be back into the midrange when you shift rather than having to short shift and getting those awkward shifts where you either go flat on top or shift early and don’t quite have the torque to pull the higher gear

I have found whenever I install a V force Reed block i have to up jet my pilot. I've experienced gains in the lower to upper mid range grunt. Cool video. Thanx
@@gentleman8464 buy a range of pilot jets and main jets. See whats in your bike first. If you cant tell as a rider if you are to fat or too lean, then take it to someone who does.
If anyones still in this comment section, please give me a run down. Ive rode for a very long time and just picked up my first 2 stroke, 2021 YZ125. It doesnt have the best idle and I believe it came with a few screws for the carb, any tips on how to get the idle good without potentially messing up the bike, it has 0 hours on it. Should i give it some time to really break in before everything feels proper? Thanks.
