@@tupelo7210 I've had it for nearly 5 years now and the pick up is starting to have a little bit of fuzz but I've found that to be the case in a lot of the yamaha electric cellos. The tone of the svc 110 is better than the svc50 but the tone can be improved with pedals. Overall just wanting to get something new. Svc50 is a good start for learning to work with electrics but after a while everyone will move on. Hope that helps😊

I would suggest either the Yamaha 110 ( the most acoustic sounding even into a direct line/audio face/sound card) or the NS Design - as this is the quietest one of the lot, but sound a bit more metallic into the audio face. This probably won't matter if you are adding lots of effects. The NS is harder to get comfortable with. Let me know what you decided x

Thank you for the comments Robyn! It is a pleasure! The Yamaha cellos both come with a set of Helicore strings. The Cecelio cello strings are unspecified - but definitely a cheaper set. I like the NS custom strings - they sound good on those cellos. I would actually recommend buying a really good quality set and putting those on for a warmer sound. In regards to bridge height - the NS strings are set up very close to the fingerboard for easy playing, but for me this is tricky as I am use to putting pressure on the strings to create a bigger sound with my acoustic cello - so the habit spill into my electric playing. The other cello have a similar bridge set up to the average height on any acoustic cello. Of course this can be adjusted by a luthier to your preference - same as with an acoustic cello. On the electric cello - you have amplified sound which requires less physical pressure - if that makes sense :) Easy does it. The cellos are only made in regular full size. Hope that was a helpful reply :) X

Hi Florian! Thank you! I totally agree. Unfortunately I only had access to the one NXTa model, but would love to try them all when I have a chance.

I'd choose the cheapest, an ipad, the FabFilter bundle, and time to build your own sound out of whatever you have. It is generally easy to make a harsher/metallic instrument sound mellower than get a nasal/dull sounding one and make it richer (such as the brown one that has no body in this video). Tbh I liked how the red one sounds, and considering price I'd try that one, or any second hand cheap one first. Acoustic cellos can vary a lot in sound too. About mixing... I only have acoustic for now, and a Schatten piezo pickup. Without mixing it doesn't sound very nice, and actually the Schatten for bass sounds better when you put under the wing of the cello bridge. Since I bought the cello one after trying what the bassist had... Go to FabFilter Q, cut the frequencies below low C, lower the high end with a shelf, add a dynamic limiter to the low end (piezos are too punchy) - you can do this inside the FabFilter equalizer, and add minimal reverb (close, clear, 50ms, 25~30% mixed with non-reverb sound), thats already 90% good. After this you just tweak until you find it. With the dynamic dots you can even fix things such as open A string being too metallic or whatever. This will give you a very good 'base sound' to which you can later add other effects such as more reverb if you feel like it. FabFilter skills is much more important than which electric instrument you have IMO.

The NS Design NXTa does not have a headphone jack - or at least not that I used or found :) The only output/input is for a quarter inch jack cable - not sue if you have an adaptor to a normal headphone jack if this can be used for headphones? I wonder. I didn't try this :) The Yamaha has a quarter inch jack as well as a headphone jack. I would be keen to try the NS end pin option to feel what this is like!

@@Dorette_Roos Helicore Strings are a fantastic match for Electric Cellos (NS Design Cello Strings by D'addario are rebranded Medium Tension Helicore 4/4 Scale Cello Strings that also have for extended Range Cellos a High E & a Low F) or for just about every Cello cause the sound is a good balance between Complexity & Clarity. The thinner gauge (w/ the Stranded Steel Core) will make a big difference in playability, & the response is so fast that you'd be like "Everything is there".

@@Dorette_Roos The Yamaha SVC-210 actually sounds like an Acoustic Cello cause it's semi-hollow bodied, meaning there's a little resonating chamber picked up by the Piezo Pickup (aka Contact mic) to make it sound more real. Friction Pegs are in fact so outdated that Tuning & restringing is a pain in the neck, especially w/ Fine tuners which are rather heavy. So w/ Geared tuning keys (the Double Bass Type Tuning keys designed for Cello) not only allow you to get rid of the Fine Tuners from the Tailpiece (or swap it out), but by pulling out a String Winder (like you'd do w/ a Guitar, Bass, or any Fretted Instrument), this will make Re-stringing & tuning a Snap. It reminds me of this:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TIjY7dk8hGo.html Restringing a Clavinet, where that instead of weaving the Strings through the Yarn which gets rather crusty, they use Clavigel which makes restringing a Snap.

@@Dorette_Roos The SVC-210 is way easier to carry than an Acoustic Cello because it's a Travel Electric Cello that folds up. A Boss Kantana Air will allow you to play anywhere you go plus it's wireless so the Transmitter makes it even more compact, & sits in a special charging jack. Restringing & Tuning w/ Friction Pegs is a pain in the neck, but w/ geared tuners & a string winder restringing & tuning becomes a snap.

In regards to ease of playing: I find the Y110 to be easier to effortlessly create a good sound and feel good under the fingers. It is definitely an 'easy to play' instrument. Sound quality is amazing on both - but hopefully the new video can show the tighter sound on 210 vs relaxed sound on 110 better.

I've been holding off on purchasing one or the other for some time now trying to collect as much information as possible on the matter, as I don't have a music store holding either one in stock for me to physically try out in a few hundred mile radius... I'll need to purchase one online and I don't have a clue on which is better suited for me. As I mention in the video - most cellists need to get an end-pin extension to bring the cello up to a comfortable height to stand. The end pin that comes with an electric cello is not long enough - unless you are quite short - like me. I would suggest contacting a luthier or steel works company to make an extra long one - rather than adding a second piece on to the existing endpin - this could make it less stable. One of my colleagues is about 2 m tall and has an extra long endpin that works well for her!

Obviously the sound quality is everything and I know this can make a tremendous difference. I've heard others playing the same SC-210 you are playing here and it doesn't sound half as good as yours because your amp is so good. I'd like headphones that allow the same quality sound. I think the main effect you are using is available through the instrument itself, without an effect from the amp, right?

With the NS Design - one does not have a left side shoulder on the instrument - so you can easily move the arm (and hand) up to the high registers without lifting your elbow or changing the hand position. Making it more comfortable and easier to play very high passages. Does this explanation make sense? :)

All were in stands, though, so the shoulder issue was not present. I thought the NS felt easier / better to play (not being an actual cellist here; I'm a saxophone player).

@@Dorette_Roos They also have geared tuners like a Guitar because friction pegs are rather delicate and obsolete. They do make Guitar style machine head tuners for Cellos that have a robust look to them due to their knobs pointing down from the head stock at a 90 degree angle.

Hi Shaofan Thank you so much! No its not - the SVC are slightly more resonant than the NS when unplugged. The SVC 110 particularly so. The SVC 210 is a bit quieter but very similar to NS. Maybe you can try a "soft" gauge A string? That should give less sound. Let me know!

@@ProtipoAl Aha sorry I forgot to update that. I brought the Artino Cello Practice Mute and it fits very tight to the bridge of NXTa. The bridge of NXTa is thicker than the classical one so I would recommend a flexible rubber mute instead. As for the sound, it did reduce the resonance a little bit but changes the tone as well.

Hey Patrick! I would recommend learning cello on an acoustic cello if this is at all an option. I would definitely not recommend the NS for a beginner - this will be too challenging :) The Yamaha 110 is the easiest and most comfortable to play. Or even the cheaper Yamaha 50 version - not part of the review would work well for a beginner. The Cecelios are physically not very comfortable - but as a beginner - you can make good progress with learning notes and basic technique. Hope this helps!
