Here are the 5 things that I ask EVERY new guitar student. These questions are crucial to me in order to understand where the student is coming from musically, as well as personally. Please click "Like & Subscribe"!
I play rockabilly upright bass and am 47 years old, but I started on guitar at age 14. A few years later switched to bass. When I was first first FIRST playing a friend of my dad's came over to the house. A great (bedroom) blues guitarist. One of the first things he mentioned was how I held the guitar. I held it like a block of wood. He told me to hold it like a lady, or cradle it like Michael Bloomfield. I never forgot that. Interesting when I picked up the bass I always had issues with it. It was never comfortable. The fact is I wanted - from day one - not to play guitar or bass guitar but upright bass. I would watch local jazz bassists and come home and try to imitate them on the guitar, like standing it on its peg on the floor, just playing 4 strings. When I converted to upright in 2019 (100%) I was just all over her! LOL We roll, rumble, cradle and I see it as an extension of me. I move, she moves. Also, for the first time, I enjoy playing bass.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Truthfully, is there a better instrument to play other than upright bass? No, and I wish I could thump away like you all. I love rockabilly. I lived in Minneapolis for a while and it was sort of a mecca for rockabilly/psychobilly bands. Jack Knife & The Sharps and Vibrochamps are 2 that I remeber well. In rockabilly, you upright players get all the attention too! Appreciate you sharing your story and thanks again for commenting.
