The fact we can’t even get subsidized loans blows my mind.
@BrisaMarie
@BrisaMarie Год назад
Yes!! I soooo feel that!
@pholbrook2277

That’s because the subsidized loan is considered need based aid. If there is no need based on income, then students would be awarded unsubsidized loans. There have been situations where graduate students in the past were given subsidized loans.

I think this video is great because personally loans is one of the scariest things about college for me. So a good breakdown in this is cool, thanks.

I made a comment about Plus loans and included Parent plus. Your video came in while I was busy reviewing loans for work. Then I realized you were talking about Graduate plus and thought i deleted the comment. I work in financial aid and award all types of financial aid. I’ve worked in higher education for 24 years hearing about financial aid never gets boring to me.

for the direct PLUS loan, do they only offer the amount of your tuition? or can they offer more based on what your living situation will be?
@BrisaMarie
@BrisaMarie Год назад
Hi! so they offer you the cost of your attendance (minus any funding you received) so they do not consider your unique living situation. HOWEVER the cost of attendance is a number created by each university that does consider things outside of just tuition like housing, travel, food and things like that! of course it is just an estimate but usually they are fairly reasonable amounts. I hope that helps! Thank you for commenting!

If we’ve used fafsa throughout college (no borrowing money, just Pell grant), is it true that we only have two years for fafsa during grad school? I heard something about a 6 year limit for something relating to fafsa, so does this mean we can only take federal unsubsidized loans the first two years of grad school and resort to grad plus/private loans the last two?
@BrisaMarie
@BrisaMarie 11 месяцев назад
Kind of! Grad students have our own funding pool (Federal loans) but it is different than the limits of undergrad. Now I am not a financial expert or like a professional on federal loans so this is just from my experience, so definitely double check with your university or loan provider. But I took out unsubsidized loans in my masters and first year of my phd and didn't have any problems. BUT I think regardless of the funding you use in undergrad you have to use the grad focused loans ... so I imagine the 6 year limit is if you go beyond 6 years in undergrad. but in grad school if you technically have 2 years left, I don't think you can use it. AGAIN I am not an expert so please double check with one! But that is my understanding!

Are the maximums you mentioned per year or true total? I just received my award package and I want to make sure I have enough to cover the extra year I might need!
@BrisaMarie
@BrisaMarie Год назад
Hi!!! So yes!! However they will all depend on your package and what your school allowance is. In many cases the government generally offers the maximum but your own university can create its own cap/maximum so its important to check with your financial aid office to see what your accurate maximum is!

Hey there! I need help with two questions. My graduate program is exactly 20,500 tuition per year which Im guessing will be covered by the unsubsidized loan which is capped at 20,500 a year. I need to afford rent and living expenses after that, and I was hoping that the Grad/direct PLUS loan would be able to cover those things. But after watching your video, would I even be eligible since they only cover the cost of tuition for my program? Where/ how can I afford rent if not with the grad plus loan? Private loans?(im not planning to work during grad school :( )
@BrisaMarie
@BrisaMarie Год назад
Hi!!! No worries! The plus loan would cover those things. The cost of attendance includes tuition cost and the cost of living expenses like housing, food, utilities and more! So you should be covered by federal loans, but I always suggest talking with your financial aid office to make sure you get the most accurate information possible!
@jorgeaugustomontoyaflores264
Hi there, I filled out the fafsa form and I got admission to UW. My question is, do I need to fill out a new form to ask for loans? or how is it work?
@BrisaMarie
@BrisaMarie Год назад
Hi!! So generally once your fasfa is completed your school will determine how much you are eligible for. Each school has a different process but generally they will contact you with that info somehow and then you can deny or accept the amount they offer. From there you just need to make sure you sign a loan agreement form which I think is at the student loan government website and then it'll disperse thru the school. But definitely reach out to your financial aid as they will know the timing and details of it all!

Hi, I need some assistance from you. So I applied for the Unsubsidized loan and my college received it but is yet to confirm the amount of aid to be provided, the maximum loan that I can get from it is $20,500. However, my program costs around $59,000 for 1 academic year. Since it's not enough, should I apply for the grad plus loan requesting $38,500?. Also, when should I apply for a grad plus loan? after my university notifies me regarding the aid provided via Unsubsidized? or can I apply right away?
@BrisaMarie
@BrisaMarie 25 дней назад
Hi! So I can't give financial advice because I am not a financial expert and every circumstance is different. Plus each school has its own requirements and policies. But I can tell you what I did and what some options may be. I requested all the loans I could my first year just to make sure I had enough money. THEN after my semester started and I had a TAship and a job I was able to retroactively reduce my loans to only EXACTLY what I need. So in that way I didn't have to take all the loans I asked for and my loan amount was able to decrease. But had I needed it, I would have had access to the maximum amount. I think when in doubt it is alway best to speak directly with the financial aid people at your institution but that was how I handled it. I hope that was helpful.

@@BrisaMarie if you don’t mind me asking: did you get or do you know someone for sure got the grad plus loan during the PhD program? I just want to be certain. I did masters in accounting and finance and got the grad plus loan during both of those periods. I am planning to do PhD, but getting different information from different sources regarding this particular matter, thanks again:)
@BrisaMarie
@BrisaMarie Год назад
Yes I did!! Lol though there may be better funding sources out there that can help you pay for grad school. (I do have an entire playlist about funding your phd - ru-vid.com/group/PLY-K7nK2wQ2W_vndUK2C-ZaIB2j4boUV4 ) but loans are definitely an option that I had to use my first two years. :) thank you for asking! Let me know if you have any more questions :)
