What drum beats are equally difficult for all skill levels? Where no matter if you’re a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player, it might be a struggle for most drummers to learn?
Here are five beats that most drummers struggle to play. And what makes them more difficult than other beats? Is it an unexpected stop, unique sticking or a hi-hat opening in an odd place? Let’s take a look:
50 Ways To Leave Your Lover
The Rosanna Shuffle
The Funky Drummer Beat
Cissy Strut
Ain’t Nobody
It isn’t enough to just play the notes in the right spots. It’s also about the feel and the groove. Every beat you learn that was played by another drummer will be almost impossible for you to replicate. No one else plays exactly like Jeff Porcaro or Zigaboo. And no one else plays exactly like you. But even though every drummer has their own playing style, we can try to get close…right?
Have you tried these beats? Do you also struggle with them?

Yep! Makes him WWWAAAAaaaaaayyyyyy more fun to watch and to know you’re OK if you’re not perfect. Everyone can improve. Heck, even Neil went back to relearn in the 90s. Sure, Neil was never the best, but he was the best at what he did. Bottom line, we all have room to improve.

The hardest part of the Rosanna Shuffle is actually making shuffle. It's not a hard drum beat, but it is quite difficult to make it groove.

@@juliansequeira3518 Jared mentioned he never played a lot of funk, and thus can't really articulate the intricacies of the groove and placements of the ghost notes. Every drummer has their forte and one of Jared's forte is odd timing and group placements. Check his stuff on those, it's mind bending.

Love your videos. I've learnt a lot from your dissection process in your lessons over the years. I continue to send aspiring drummers who have approached me to learn drums to watch drumeo. Your clear and realistic process in teaching is easily accessible and practical. Watching your intro on this video made me think of the first lesson all musicians learn (or should learn), which is to play through your mistakes. Practice is not being perfect, rather it's learning to keep playing to become perfect through practice. Mistakes are only mistakes if you let them be. I learnt that mindset when learning concert percussion from a highschool music teacher. It was the best lesson that increased my ability to learn technical rhythms, which was developed through feeling the rhythm while continuing to play (not being technical on mistakes, at first). That's how many of the best rhythms we know today were developed, before they were perfected. Through feeling it out, making mistakes, keeping playing, and turning it all into the grooves we love!

Jeff Porcaro's Groove.... Friend of mine was playing percussion with Toto back in the 90's and took me to a couple of Tour rehearsals. Had the amazing up close experience to watch Jeff play and hang out and chat about his playing for about an hour after rehearsal. So generous with his time. He loved talking about "Groove". One of the things Jeff does to make his playing groove is he makes his Rock and shuffle beats "Swing". Notice his snare and kick are EVER so slightly on the back edge of the beat at times. Listen to how he and his brother Mike play "way on the back edge" of the beat on the tune Pamela. After Jeff passed and Simon Philips took over I attended a rehearsal with Simon. Simon kicked the shit out of Rosanna. But no disrespect to Simon who is a Drum God in his own right, it didn't swing the same way as when Jeff played it. Nobody I know of could play farther on the back edge of the beat without dragging than Jeff Porcaro! Miss him dearly!

I think Cissy strut has an extra bass note on the second 16th of the third movement, which make the groove even more difficult, as it is adjacent to a bass note, and it's simultaneous to a hi hat hand note

Jared. this is a great video. I like your meat and potatoes approach to finding the straight forward solution toward playing the patterns that have evaded many of us for so long. Having played ALL these songs in performance, I really appreciate you "breaking the ceiling" on how to make these beats FEEL and SOUND right. After mastering the basic pattern, the thing that made each of these beats a winner was the FEEL they gave the music. I do appreciate your approach. As an experienced professional musician the most important part for me was how to approach each beat to achieve the sound and FEEL of the original. Thanks for all your inspiration!

Chief Broseff LOL… You can always get your (ahem) fill by checking out some of Rush’s magnificent live DVD’s. Start with R30 or R40, since with the camera angles and modern filming techniques you can just about be right on stage with them. Then maybe check out some of the mid career stuff, like “A Show of Hands”. Also look at Neil’s “Taking Center Stage”, which is all about him performing live and how he practices and prepares for it, and then performs many fan favorites. It’s mostly for drummers, but you will see him play up close. 😊

Awesome list -- these are great explanations of great choices. FYI, I found the best way to get the Roseanne shuffle to feel like a shuffle is to not treat the three count as though it were hat-hat-snare, but rather as a series of hat-snare-hat, like Porcaro says in his video. If you practice it as hat-snare-hat, hat-snare-hat slowly and gradually speed up, the timing of placing the grace notes is easier. As for 50 Ways, there ain't no easy way to get that one. . .

Love DRUMEO! Thanks for these beats! They have been among my favorites for decades. You play them well, as an excellent drummer should. Please take another pass at Cissy Strut . What makes it challenging is the coordination between the hi-hat bass drum parts in the 2nd bar of the rhythm. Give it a listen. I was really looking to see how you were going to break that down for us. Well, Amas Omar Hakim wrote in my high school yearbook...Don't stop playin' keep on jammin!

This is fascinating. Your suggestions Jared about feel and stretching notes, as well as the comments here about swing and placement of the note in the beat are giving me a lot to work with. The comment about being at the back of the beat got my attention. Phillips attacks the beat. Porcaro lays it on the back of the beat. Different feel. There's a song I play that only works if my foot is lazy. If I'm too crisp, too regimented, it just feels off. Then the other comment about intent and feel. Everything I saw in the video is true about dynamics, the sticking, the commitment to precision. So hard for me some days. But that feel makes sense to me, let’s me come around again and again. My guitarist friend sent me a meme that strong technical mastery of the fret board is essential for guitarists. But the real magic happens with the other hand. The touch, the pace, the emotion. Such a tease Jared about where the idea of musical conversation comes in. What if it's less about the Gadd level and more a reflection of Paul Simon/Steve Gadd setting the emotional scene. The end of each drum phrase is the period in a sentence. The narrator is getting this intriguing perspective from his lover. Interest, then reflection. Intrigue, then reflection. Really honey, there must be so many ways to do this. Then let it sink in. Place the note behind the lyric. Simon delivers the lyric slow, let the last tom go late. Same with the guitar or bass. Take the cue from the intent of the song, how the emotion is being driven by the experience the song invokes. Maybe the funk drummer came out of that moment that sometimes happens in jams when you're feeling sprightly and willing to get on top of the bass groove. What if Rosanne is driven by the brightness of waking up a year later to know you've survived losing the love of your life and spring still comes. That whole song is bright, upbeat, downright cheerful. Just the damn keyboard lead and barbershop lift. So the drums follow suit with the peppy shuffle up top, with Porcaros kick like Singing in the Rain. What if that back of the beat drags a little and stylistically makes the drum part, like Kelly drags the lyric. Maybe Jared you've brought me to the moment where we meet our fellow musicians and the soul of the song itself. And that's why some of these beats are hard. If I'm not feeling the moment, the intent, the heart, I'll never get it.

Marching percussion does this all the time - it calls for extreme dynamic differences, so Google some marching snare music, and start practicing on your snare drum (or a practice pad) and build up to being able to play ghost notes after the accent.

Great initiative Drumeo :) I've worked ( ie struggled/cursed/tried time and again/shedded) on the first four grooves. A slow-ish right hand forced me to play Funky Drummer two handed on the hihat, I might give another try now that my technique's gotten better. Poor double strokes with the right foot gave me quite some grief when shedding 50 ways and Rosanna. Maybe the balance issue should get a Drumeo segment on its own, it's one of those basic things that easily get overlooked.

But the way they did it with really Cold and heartless they got some other drummer an didn't tell me I've never Got dropped before.. To replace me for a worse drmmer than me sometimes you never know what's going to happen To yourself finding new bands.. After a study all the songs then they sed you're too far away to pick you up now they just sit in my music studio I actually used the the Tom's For a TV stand I'll never do that again Who would do something like that I've been playing 25 fucken years I can smoke that other drummer they got goes to show sometimes people are stupid to pick out musicians shoot if I had a kick ass drummer I would drive 2 hours away to pick the them up...the other guy they kept looks like that he got his drum sit from a second hand dime store.. I couldn't believe they replaced me with something like that I played with . Social Distortion members adolescence I jam with all fucken top punk rock bands. I played with vandals circle jerks everybody TSOL I was the connection they could of went on tour I had shirts made up I couldnt believe this happen to me.. Who would do something like that stupid drop a good drummer for a bad drummer that's like dropping and Dave Grohl for some . No experienced drummer hardly ever how stupid they could a been on tour with Agent Orange and everybody with me I just don't understand it blows my mind they had connections I was the connection they blew it now they're starting from the bottom.. All I got to say is watch yourself people you never know what Gonna happen you think you're in a band but really you're not that's what they made me think I'll never do that again I'll be more cautious and make sure I'm in the band before giving it my all For them.. I wonder if he would break down " Jabo Starks" version of " Turn on your love light ' by Bobby " Blue " Bland ? its a beast to play correctly. Especially at the tempo he plays it. Its a double shuffle groove.

I learned the funky drummer differently. (Programming it into drum machines and DAWs, then playing that on a set). It was more kick kick snare, ghost/open hat twice, then back to the snare between two slower kicks than the start, and a final open hat before returning into the kick kick again on beat 1 and repeating. Instead of the ghost on the open hat (maybe just ahead of it), he also throws in a drill type roll on the snare sometimes.

Nice lesson.

I love playing the Ain’t nobody groove. I heard it was programmed on the Linn drum and JR had to learn how to play it himself after. Hence both grooves should have an extra hi hat that lands with the snare ( few programmers write how a drummer would lose one hi hat to play the snare). Except guys like Gadd who nearly always add a double LH HH to a hand to hand 16th beat.

Paul Riddle's samba type groove on Marshall Tucker's "This Old Cowboy" has always been a tough one to nail down for me. Hard to hear everything he's playing and there sounds like there is a lot going on.

Rosanna groove is the one I've tried to learn for a long time. Never gotten it down. So I gave it up. The other grooves haven't really intrested me.

I’ve never listened to much of JR Robinsons work, so I can’t say much on his work. That aside, Zig was a huge influence. Cissy strut is one of my favorite tunes to play. I’m learning 50 ways right now. Rosanna has kicked my ass for years now. And Clyde is a legendary player that doesn’t get enough credit! However, like you said, the feel of these tunes is what’s most important.
