5 Female blues guitarists, ‪@MuleResonatorGuitars‬ new hybrid, and...‪@JasonMomoa‬ playing guitar? All this and MORE on Acoustic Tuesday!
Before I begin, I want to thank everyone who has been suggesting other acoustic blues musicians, especially those that asked for more female blues guitarists!
The first female blues guitarist you need to check out is Elizabeth Cotton. Known for playing the guitar upside-down, Elizabeth Cotton is an INSPIRATION to all guitarists - be sure to check out her full discovery.
The second female blues guitarist you need to know on my list is Etta Baker. Born in North Carolina, Etta Baker is an incredible acoustic blues guitarist. Her fingerpicking and tone is a joy to watch and listen to.
The third female blues guitarist you NEED to listen to is Memphis Minnie. Born in 1897, Memphis Minnie didn't always play guitar on her records, but she has a LEGENDARY discography filled with fun, raunchy songs (especially for the time!).
The fourth female blues guitarist on my list is Algia Mae Hinton. Whether you watch her fingerpicking or listen to the phrasing in her singing, Algia Mae Hinton is absolutely a female blues guitarist that you can't skip.
Finally, my number one pick for female blues guitarists you need to know is Jessie Mae Hemphill. For someone that oozes the blues and has that tone that no one else has, Jessie Mae Hemphill is for you. Her genre of acoustic blues is called North Mississippi Hill Country Blues!
Up next, I'll show you a sneak peek at the 5-day blues challenge that's starting on January 27th! In just 2 weeks, you'll be able to learn some new blues techniques and expand your vision of your blues guitar playing.
After that, I'll be showing you the Mule "Mavis" which is a semi-hollow guitar made with all-roasted Michigan maple. For a guitar that's a cross between a resonator and an archtop, look no further than Mule's "Mavis."
And...speaking of Mule Guitars, I have some footage of Matt from‪@MuleResonatorGuitars‬ delivering a custom guitar to Jason Mamoa. Be sure to watch the full episode to see more.

Jessie Mae is awesome. My ex wife pulled her record out of the cd bins when we were music shopping around '06. Bought it just from the look of her. Legit. You can just tell. Loaded it into iTunes and for some reason iTunes favored it very strongly when on "shuffle". Played it all the time.

I'm ready for the challenge! Hats off to 'Mr.' Fischbach from Memphis who taught my roommate CB and me how to play Dave van Ronk's Bad Dream Blues. We sweat blood over the independent thumb, and the painful pinky finger stretches. It opened the door to other acoustic blues styles. I'm ready for another breakthrough!

You are absolutely correct that Jessie Mae Hemphill is #1. She truly pumps out the blues with a a serious, down-home, Mississippi Delta style. And she grooves with her music. I wish there was more known and talked about her. She wasn't recorded until later in her life and a brain illness cut her recording career short. ...Great trivia question! Ma' Rainey is definitely the "Queen of the Blues".

I made a list of five before watching this weeks episode, and I agreed with you on Memphis Minnie, and Elizabeth Cotten. I hadn't heard of Etta Baker, so thank you for that, and the others making my list: Sister Rosetta Tharp, Bonnie Raitt and Rory Block... but you really can't go wrong with any of the choices listed.

Thanks, Tony. She didn't play acoustic guitar, but Ma Rainey, "the Mother of the Blues," deserves lots of recognition. Searching with Google, there are lots of links to her music. Denzel Washington is producing the movie "Ma Rainer's Black Bottom" for Netflix. The Ma Rainey museum is housed in her Columbus, Georgia home.

Disappointed that you left out Bonnie Raitt - while she's currently electrified in front of a band, her early work was all acoustic. Fell in love with her when she first started on the scene at the Cellar Door in WDC. Rory Block is another who ought to be on the list as well.
@pickerdad8402
@pickerdad8402 4 года назад
Me too. Bonnie has always been my #1 blues goddess. She grew up in a household where all the original Delta Bluesmen hung out. Son House was like family to her. I never miss her concerts when she's in town. btw she's got a tour on now with James Taylor; another acoustic god. They're in Vancouver in a couple of months.

Gazooks rolled outabed this morning singing one of Elizabeth Cottons tunes..Diamond Teeth" Mary McClain...she performed with Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Count Basie, Nat King Cole, and Duke Ellington, and she was often promoted as the "Queen of the Blues"... Among the stories she told about her long career were that she had lived for a time with the baseball star Satchel Paige and that the young Elvis Presley "would bring Howlin' Wolf and me liquor from the liquor cabinet....Anyway We were having a guitar beer drinking fest at the beach in my hometown where she spent her last days ....the guys opened up the mic for her and she entertained us drunks all afternoon...nobody really but a few knew who she was....amazed at her stamina belting out the blues at her age and playing for free try to get that in these days.

I found it a little strange that one of your fav guitarists of all time, Elizabeth Cotten, was last in the ranking, while the first two places are occupied by two guitarists you never heard of before. Also, I didn't quite get why you think that those 5 women are specifically good. Of course, I hear something "special", but in a video like this I would like to learn what seperates them from others.
