In today's video I'll show you 5 BJJ side control positions and how I hold them and use them to setup other techniques. I think this will be helpful to anyone from White Belt to the advanced ranks. You'll see that I prefer some positions for pinning while others work better for setting up submissions or transitioning to other positions.
In the video I show. . .
- Head and hip
- Head and arm control
- Kesa Gatame
- Reverse side control (without arm)
- Reverse side control (with arm)
These are certainly not all of the side control positions you can use in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu but they do make of several of the most fundamental you'll need. And in all honesty. These make up about 90% of the side control style positions I use as a Black Belt in both competitions and hard rolling.
So if you're looking for some help with your side control then I hope the positions in this video are helpful to you.
Hope this video is helpful to you.

In class we were talking about the merits of keeping your head by their head from scarf to reduce framing and them pushing you over and taking side control themselves.

Great videos as always, guys. I am a judo coach and beginner jiu jitsuka. My go-to pin is the kesa gatame (headlock version), but in jiu jitsu, I have been playing with the kurzure version, but it took me a while to get used to the idea of allowing that arm to play around so close to my head. You are right about higher level BJJ players finding a way to your back, however. I appreciate your distinction, however, regarding the purpose of the kuzure kesa gatame (BJJ style), and its judo cousin. Great power in that pin -- either version! Now I try to get the Americana off the kesa gatame off of osoto gari throw. If I miss it, I like to slip into kata gatame (arm triangle pin), but you are right, that you have to be able to swing into all those base pins to keep with the rolling and shrimping. Great stuff, guys!

I love these positions. I just started BJJ less then I month ago. I can somewhat manage to get myself in side control but when I do, I always have a hard time getting a submission from top or side control. When I’m bottom in guard though, I can get arm bars and rubber guard, but when I’m on top I always have a hard time remembering submission and blank all the time. Right now my gym is doing pods and we’re only able to work with one person and we started BJJ at the same time. So there’s times where we at a stalemate and nothing happens. What do you recommend we do? Edit: just found your video on working on techniques without drilling- 4 effective ways to roll to boost your BJJ techniques without drilling. Leaving this comment here for others to see.

depending on the instructor many of the takedowns will be Judo with Wrestling others will be more Wrestling based ... anyway how much Newaza did you do, and how many ground submissions? and how is Side Control, North South Control and Mount from the Top? Guard from the Bottom and what submissions and sweeps do you have from the bottom? Submission Defense? .... if you have all that in Newaza the game should translate pretty well and the Belt promotions should be faster than the average person who never trained .... If the Judo club focused say 70% or more on stand up and not Newaza then it may not really translate

Hey Chewy, I've been training for 3 months. I'm a hefty gal and not very fast. I'm having issues when I roll. I get to a certain point and can't remember what to do next. It's like my mind goes blank. I'm not sure which technique to use, and when to use it. My coach drills us on learned techniques every couple of weeks, even side control and kaysa, so I know what has been taught so far, I just can't put the knowledge into action. Any tips?
@shamicentertainment1262

I have the same issue. I’m going to try just focusing on one at a time, so I can often get to side control, so I’ll try to learn and drill some submissions from there

I started BJJ for self defense. When I hear about a techniques application to a game or usefulness in a competition I'm unsure how to decipher the information. Is it up to me as the learner to evaluate a techniques application in a self defense situation? There are some BJJ techniques that are good in competition but not in a fight; but how do I know, other than just my own common sense?

@112887db

Pick the non good looking girl at the gym to roll with? Totally kidding! I would try to introduce your wife to everyone at the gym (mainly the regulars) to make her feel more comfortable. She may not understand its just rolling and may thing there is something more to it. Would she like to try jiu jitsu? Maybe have her try a class so that she can see its nothing sexual.

maybe im an idiot but I find side control to be the biggest waste of time. It has no place being covered as much and honestly if you were to have a match like this you should get in trouble for being boring as fuck and just holding someone still. Because in a real fight you dont just sit on a dude and hold him. he hits you while you try and control or submit him. Yeah I know people get tired after doing this shit for 10 minutes straight but no one fucking does that in real life.
