G. V. Rao obtained his B.E. in Civil Engg from BITS, Pilani (1966). After completing his Master’s (1968) and Ph.D. (1973) from IISc, Bangalore, Dr. Rao had a distinguished career of over three decades (1975-2007) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, serving as Professor and Head of the Department, Dean of Students and in various other capacities. He guided 24 Ph.D. and over 100 M.Tech. theses, while authoring over 200 research papers, many of which have won awards for Best Theses and Best Papers internationally. He developed and initiated the very first Geosynthetics Laboratory, in the country and the first Master’s Programme in Transportation Engineering at IITD. He was President of the India Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society and Chairman of the Bureau of Indian Standards Committee on Geosynthetics. A recipient of many awards of the International Geosynthetic Society, Indian Geotechnical Society and CBIP, Dr. G. V. Rao founded an organization, Sai Master Geoenvironmental Services Pvt. Ltd. after voluntarily leaving IITD in the year 2007. He also served as an Independent Director, at IRCON International Ltd, of the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, during 2010 to 2013. Over the years he is involved with many institutions such as NHAI, NTPC, NHPC, Ratnagiri Gas and Power Co. Ltd, Chattisgargh State Electricity Board, L&T Geostructures, Megha Engineering, Jaipur Development Authority & the Geosynthetic Industry. His first book on Engineering with Geosynthetics published by Tata McGraw Hill, New Delhi, in the year 1990 has received international recognition through FHWA USA). Since 2007, he has documented his experiences through many books - co-authored with renowned experts/practicing engineers. He is currently National consultant to Kalpasar Project, Government of Gujarat and the Japanese High Speed Rail Project from Sabarmati to Mumbai. He is an advisor to MOT Research Project on Jute Geotextiles at IJIRA, a Centre of Excellence of the Ministry of Textiles. Since Jan 2016, he is associated with IIT Gandhi Nagar as Guest Professor.
