Easily the best Baseball franchise of the 16-bit era. Felt like they had a monopoly and even though these were Genesis exclusive. Only thing is like most old sports games that don't lean heavily into arcade style gameplay these don't hold up quite as well.
I had a migraine all day on my 21st birthday. I didn't drink at the time so I didn't really miss out but to keep me occupied I played Bottom of the 9th all day in my dark room. Happy birthday to me!
Bummer man. My 21st birthday was depressing. As I lived with a Mormon family who didn't allow alcohol in the house. So I went and bought a Mickey's 40oz and drank alone outside in the carport at night in the dark. That is a night I will never forget. Sigh....
I absolutely loved Bad News Baseball on NES when I was growing up. Very arcade feel with fun animated cutscenes, awesome music and a pink bunny as the umpire. How can ya beat that.
I'm a huge fan of Super Baseball Sim 1.000 to the point that I imported all the SFC sequels. And I picked up Super Batter Up after finding out that it's the only true US sequel to RBI Baseball.
The NES version of Baseball Stars is still my all time favorite baseball game. I love the create a team mode. My friends and I still play it to this day.
Baseball Simulator 1.000 was always my NES baseball jam. I just loved that there was a stadium in space. Not to mention the league where everyone had various super powers.
Baseball Stars on the NES has a special place in my heart, as my brother and I played the heck out of it. We were big into rotisserie baseball at the time, and we would put the teams from our league in and play and sim it for some added fun. I haven't played any of The Show, but I may have to pick it up and give it a go. I haven't played a baseball video game in many years.
No kidding I am currently playing MLBPA Baseball on the SNES while watching this, not the best baseball game on the snes but one I rented a lot back in the day
Little league on the nes is awesome it's just like baseball stars such a great game! Also since I only recently bought a ps3 the most current show I have played is 14. So being a xbox one s owner I'm looking forward to the show 21 on game pass.
Little League Baseball was THE human vs human baseball game. My brother and I have continued to battle it out over the years with this game. The players on that game are legendary!
This is a very sensible list if only for RBI and Ken Griffey. I grew up in a small town and we would hold ‘tournaments’ with RBI Baseball 2 with friends and family. I recently acquired a CIB version of that game and showed it off on Facebook and the response from everyone (including people I didn’t even know played this game) was incredible.
Ken Griffey jr baseball actually does have all the rep players just not their names. It also lets you edit their names and I remember going through my baseball cards at the time and updated as many players as I could. I probably had close to 75% of the real names in the game. Let my friend borrow it and when I got it back the save had been wiped. I was devastated lol. Definitely the best baseball game on SNES.
i had done the same, but i completed 100% of the names. that was lots of time going through the news paper and year book stats section, and entering names. and of course players had been traded or sent to AAA, so that made it even more fun, but it was worth it. easier to get hyped when you hit a grand slam with the real player name. i checked a few months ago, and unfortunately from battery degredation only about 9 teams had the names left.
I think it was Tony LaRussa Baseball where I got a reliever up in the bullpen, forgot about him, and when I finally called on him, his stamina was zero. Dude pitched himself to exhaustion in the bullpen.
Oh yeah I remember my older brother would track all of his players stats on paper for every game. I was to young to really understand everything but I was mesmerized by all the data on sheets of paper like that.
His team was the Pirates, with Jay Bell, Bobby Bonilla, Barry Bonds, LaVierrie, Andy Van Slyke, Doug Drabek, Merced, John Smiley. Geez it's games like this that is the whole reason I remember players from this far back I was probably 9 years old at the time.
@@cwshumate914 I remember the braves of that time slightly too because of them playoff games. My brother would be watching them and they were some great games. Geez let me think.... Pendleton, Glavin, Avery, Justice, Sid Bream strictly based on the mustache how could you forget that thing, Ron Gant...and in sure more I'm just forgetting right now. I believe that was the year they played the Twins in the world series, I could be wrong. Geez I just realized I can think of more players in 1991 when I was 9 than I could tell you playing right this second. I haven't followed baseball much outside of the Royals going to the WS in 14 and 15 because we are Royals fans being from Kansas City but let's be honest it was way more fun playing with the Pirates of that time period than the Royals lol.
I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I absolutely loved NES Baseball from Nintendo (I'm honestly probably one of the only people that do these days). I love how simple it is, I love how casual it is, i also love the cute cartoony little player sprites on the field. It's not the best baseball game by a long shot, but I still really enjoy it, I have the Famicom version myself. Another favorite of mine is Tommy Lasorda Baseball for Sega Genesis since it plays a nice fast-paced game and feels arcade-y to me.
I always liked the follow up to Ken Griffey JRs MLB, which was Ken Griffey JRs Winning Run for the SNES. Nothing will ever beat EA’s MVP Baseball 2005 though. That game was so immersive, the gameplay was so smooth, and the soundtrack is sick. Great video John, especially for all the big baseball fans out there. 🎮😎🤘⚾️
I was thinking that you would not mention KGjr baseball, but you did! Great list. As a kid, KGjr offered intuitive controls, great graphics, and I put so many hours into the home run derby with my brothers.
I'm not a massive fan of the sport, but I absolutely adored the arcade stylings of Baseball Stars 2 on the Neo Geo. To this day, that's my favourite Baseball title. I did enjoy the original "Hardball!", Roger Clemens MVP Baseball, and Triple Play, though.
Baseball Stars on the NES blew me away!! It was so much fun! I used to like Roger Clemens baseball on the NES. I would play with the Braves. The leadoff hitter Otis Nixon had the most power in the game. It was a simple game. Bit very good. But I had fun playing it.
I used to love Micro league Baseball for the C64 because you had historical rosters and could play out seasons, but watching the teams take the field was brutal.
Loved Bases Loaded growing up (Oko was the best!) Baseball Stars was great too. Always rented it. But my favorite is Baseball All-stars 2003 on PS2. Everything from the player and team customization, pitching, batting options, injuries, career progression, and overall feel gives some good play.
Gosh, Baseball was so much fun! Tap or hold down 1 button to pitch and 1 button to hit. That's it nothing more is needed! Never played triple play before gonna have to check that one out! Thanks John
Bases Loaded 2: The Second Season on NES is my all time favorite baseball game. It was ahead of it’s time with the strategies and player algorithms that really played a part in the game. Knowing when to sub within your bullpen was an integral part to winning 75 of the 125 games needed to advance to the playoffs. Also the behind the mound camera view was outstanding for offense and defense. The players would actually have a fight if the pitcher hit the batter too many times. Overall my favorite baseball sim.
For a modern arcade title I would recommend the Super Mega Baseball series. Fantastic games, and available on a variety of platforms. And for a wacky classic, 2020 Super Baseball is a fun offshoot of the Baseball Stars series.
Probably my own time favorite baseball games were RBI baseball free on the Genesis and MLB 99 for the PlayStation 1 But I've owned quite a few baseball games over the years including King Griffey presents Major League baseball and I enjoy playing just about all of them If any baseball game I think is underrated is mlbpa baseball on super Nintendo and Sega Genesis I've always enjoyed that As far as baseball stories for me I've never been good at baseball I've always either smoked too high or too low My brother on the other hand could fro anywhere from 90 to 100 mph and could hit home runs whenever he wanted to literally our high school baseball coach wanted in the play but my brother didn't want to play just because it wasn't his thing But one story I tell everybody with my brother is back when I'll opryland was open they had a fast pitch And my brother played it and got 85 89 and 91 first time playing it and my dad looked at my brother and said you want to play that again to see if you can hit those speeds again And my brother was like sure He paid a second time and got 91 '95 and then 101 That's my brother was collecting the prize for the second time and ask me what I wanted cuz he got what he wanted the first time he played My dad asked the guy running the game how accurate is that gun He said it's about 3 mi either way on the speed My dad joking me looked at my brother and said now I know why my hand feels like it's on fire when I play cash with you because if you're feeling anywhere near 100 miles an hour right now wonder my hand stings And dad played catch with him all the time but it literally reached the point to her dad was staying as far away in the yard as he could and it still stung his hand because of how hard my brother could pitch and hit a baseball Thank you for reading this and I hope everyone is having a great day have a great week a great weekend and a great Lord Sunday this coming up Sunday God bless you and your family and thank you for your content John Hancock I hope you're having a good day sir God bless you and your family sir God bless you Jeremy Scruggs
If you have exhausted all U.S. baseball releases try Super Famista 2 and 5 (players look like RBI but so much more colorful) and every Culture Brain baseball game on SFC. Baseball Advance (THQ) on GBA is outstanding as well. ...Yes MVP 2005 is the GOAT.
MVP Baseball was amazing. I never had 2005 because I had a demanding job and worked a lot but if it's better than 2004 I missed out big time. When I was in Little League 1988 thru 1992 we played Bases Loaded. BL2 was better but the first one is the nostalgia for me.
Great video! Baseball is by far my favorite sport. The 1st Griffey Jr. game on the SNES, you could edit the player names. I was about 12 and I sat there one Saturday and lines the stats of each player up with cards from the 1994 Score set. It was wonderful, until something happened with the battery and wiped my work! Still great memories!
I had 2 that I played a ton of when I was young. Ken Griffey Jr Presents Major League Baseball for the SNES and All Star Baseball 2000 for the N64. Both I still have CIB.
World Series Baseball II was the best game on Sega Saturn in my opinion and maybe one of the best baseball games of all time. Trades weren't allowed in the game which seriously limited it's play in some ways, but the authenticity and game play was fantastic. Sports Talk Baseball was another from my childhood that's simulation ability was really fun. And like others have said, Little League Baseball on nes was a blast playing 1v1 at home!
One of my old favorites was Hardball on the computer.. you could mod it (or download a save file from AOL) to give you all the "real" teams and players.. and unlike most baseball video games of the time, the hitting wasn't overly easy
I would definitely say any of the The Show games, along with Baseball Stars 2 (Neo Geo ver) MVP baseball, the Ken Griffey games, even the Slugfest games were fun for a while.
Bases Loaded (NES) and Super Bases Loaded (SNES) were the two me and my friends always used to really enjoy, and i still play both of them on my hacked SNES Classic to this day.
I grew up playing World Series baseball on the genesis I remember my friends step dad made a homemade motion controller out up a wiffle ball bat great video John
Your awesome video made me go out and re-buy some of these. Such great memories. A little tidbit, Ken Griffey Jr does actually include all of the real players, just not their real names. :)
all star baseball for the N64 was awesome...great pitcher/batter interface, easy defensive adjustments, great dive and jump mechanics....I love mlb TheShow also...love RBI baseball, i love the music in that game. The Mario baseball game was fun also. all so basewars was kinda fun, and dusty dimond all star was cool because you drafted a team from like 30-60 players, one was a miner who used a pick axe, also a witch that used a broom. one of a kind execution if nothing else.
All of the games featured in this video are great baseball games for various reasons. But one older and stats-based game I fondly remember and played a lot was Pure-State Baseball for the Commodore 64. I later added one of the season expansion disks and the stadium disk. It wasn't much to look at, but offered a lot in strategy and the option to build your own players and teams. At the time, I managed an Electronics Boutique store in Texas and decided to have some fun at work by making an EB team with me and my staff as players, and displaying games on auto-play in the store; my district manager, however, was not amused...eh, supervisors.
Great collection of baseball games! My favorite will always be Baseball Stars for the NES. "What is a wren?" "A bird" "When isn't it?" "When it is". Anyone else remember these codes!?
Ken Griffey agree is all time baseball game, my friend and I would change all the names of players into funny things and wrestlers name, also many hours doing the HR derby
Loved Ken Griffey Jr's Winning Run. Great graphics and music, fast gameplay. And we actually loved the made up names of all the characters as kids. Bolt Lightning was unstoppable.
Baseball Stars received regular play in my NES, Ken Griffey Jr. was the same for the SNES, and World Series Baseball for Genesis. I haven't played any past the 16-bit era.
the pitcher vs batter match ups with a friend were so intense. Always liked showing a pitch location and then make it disappear...just to try and mess with his head lol
World series was awesome. The first one with the semi first person behind the plate view was something I would never forget. I loved playing with the giants and having matt williams after his 40 something home run season and barry bonds on the same team. I was probably 12 at the time. Also was a big fan of world series baseball on the Saturn. It was more of a traditional baseball game at the time and the Cleveland Indians were just a power house. Albert Belle hitting bombs!
This video popped up in my feed today, and I had to watch it! That’s so cool that you mention Jay from Square Pegs! Awesome guy! I love his channel! He has definitely mentioned you, and I’m finally glad I got to check out one of your videos!
Started with Real Sports Baseball on the 2600 I believe. There may have been a game called Baseball too that I owned on the system. One I really enjoyed and owned was Reggie Jackson Baseball on the Master System. I only really had 2 games I really liked for that system. RJ Baseball and Wonder Boy 3 , which was awesome.
I respect the triple play / Tony Larussa love, I was actually a fan of both of these titles but only because I was a fan of earl weaver baseball on pc which was amazing and deep with ball park creation and a commissioner mode. I didn’t play baseball games on nes until later on and I liked bad news baseball the most for it’s overall gameplay, I respect the depth and reasons for baseball stars though, great title as well. I do love Ken Griffey on snes, man that is an awesome title. World Series baseball 98 on Saturn was also an amazing title as well as hardball 3 on genesis as well. I love mlb the show, but I just love the simplest way the retro games play, they even try to do it in the show but to me it gets too Arcady when I prefer a sim experience
My favorite baseball game (16 bit) is MLBPA Baseball on SNES. I still play it from time to time. It also has fun cheat codes like rubber field (the ball bounces super high) and frozen field (the ball glides around with little to no bounce).
Sega’s World Series ‘99 is my favorite arcade baseball game. Very fast paced and I love the flip lever for swinging the bat. Unfortunately it never got a home port so you would either have to find an arcade cabinet or emulate it.
Im not a fan of modern baseball games, i liked the mario one but thats about it. Older baseball games are way better. Particularly ones from the 80s and 90s. I used to have this handheld baseball game, it was either bronze or gold colored and i think it had a field around the screen. That game was so much fun... wish i remembered what it was called so i could find it again!
Sports Talk Baseball for the Sega Genesis my all time favourite baseball game, i remember MLB for the Nes The World Series Baseball series for the Genesis were good ones too
Loved Baseball Stars on the NES.. Extra Innings on the SNES Tony LaRussa 2 on the Genesis I've enjoyed The Show series on the PlayStation.. Triple Play series when it was going.. Two different management sims on the computer: Baseball Mogul and Out of the Park Baseball
For me, if I had to do like a top ten or so. In no specific order: Bases Loaded, Baseball Stars, RBI 4, Tony LaRussa, World Series Baseball, Triple Play Gold, 99, and Triple Play PS2, World Seeies Baseball 2K2, All-Star Baseball 2004, High Heat 2004, MVP Baseball 2005, MLB 05 and the Show 06/08 (really the entire series). …but the one that mostly blew my mind as a kid was Baseball Stars as it was the first game that I experienced that allowed for GM like features. Salaries, Trades, Firing Players. It was in that moment that. I knew that was my life calling. LOL Also, shout out to the cover of “Tessie” in MVP 2005 and the entire soundtrack in MLB the Show 08. Specifically, “”sweep the leg”!😂😢
My favorite baseball video games of all-time are: Ken Griffey, Jr. Presents MLB (SNES) MVP Baseball 2003-05 (OG XBOX/PS2) World Series Baseball (Genesis) World Series Baseball 2K3 (OG XBOX/PS2) Sports Talk Baseball (Genesis) Triple Play 98 (PS1) MLB 07 - The Show (PS2/PS3) 2020 Super Baseball (Arcade/Genesis) Super Batter Up (SNES) Super Baseball Simulator 1.000 (SNES) Baseball Simulator 1.000 (NES) RBI Baseball series (NES and Genesis) Bases Loaded I and II (NES) ESPN MLB Baseball 2K4 (OG XBOX)
