I know you love options and in sewing we always have many! Here is a flat front elasticated back waistband type of "masterclass" with 5 ways to do it! There are new ways too and not the common ones you have already seen me sew before, I hope you enjoy and in time have your faves like I do :)
The Tinley shorts, skort & skirts come in sizes XS-5X and are 22% OFF through Monday 7th of August 2023. This is my affiliate link: www.lovenotions.com/product/tinley?affiliates=366

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Methods in order of appearance:
1. Front & back waistbands sewn separately, side seams are the last step
2. Front & back waistbands sewn on the round, reversed, elastic on the back threaded last
3. Front and waistband sewn on the round, traditionally right sides together with a stitch in the ditch for less bulk
4. Back waistband has channels and smaller elastic is used. Then the front waistband is sewn to the back waistband and you have one you sew on the round to the garment
5. Front waistband uses the main fabric and is interfaced (rectangle or curved) and the back is a heavy knit with at least 10% spandex and good recovery (half a yoga waistband), no elastic needed.
Tell me what your fave is!
Excellent master class. I will definitely be referring back to it on a regular basis. I appreciate the detail and filming of all the methods. I've sewn method #1 and found it difficult to create a smooth transition at the side seams because of the bulkiness. I look forward to all of your videos and tutorials and frequently reference them. Although your methods 2 and 3 are my favorites, I finish them a little differently. After the waistband has been sewn on to the pants, I topstitch the back portion only. After the elastic has been inserted and secured at the back, then I topstitch to finish the front waistband. Thank you for all your very informative videos. I recommend you to all my sewing friends.
Karina, bless your 💜💜💜! That switcheroo on putting wrong and right sides together just about did me in, but after rewinding, unpicking and resewing, I got it and it's the best waistband I've ever done, even though I had to piece the inside facing together. 😂 Thank you for all you do for the sewing community!
Just discoverd this one of yours for waistbands. No 2 is going to be the preferred one for me from now on. So much easier than how I have been shown to do it in the past. Can I also add that since watching you I have become a fan of basting. So much better than pins in some cases as more flexible i.e. collars. My last collar went in so much easier. Thank you!
Making channels also makes it easy to change the elastic later because you don’t have to unpick and resew top stitching through elastic (if, say, the elastic wears out).
When you sewed the contour waistband in option #5, how did you stretch just the knit fabric on top without also stretching out the bottom layer of fabric on the bottom? It didn't look like you were pulling on either layer, but you got them to match up perfectly! I have not figured out how to sew with stretch very well yet.
Wonderful video - thank you! Just a question on the yoga waistband (last technique): how do you calculate the length of the back waistband if you're substituting that technique for a waistband that was supposed to have elastic through it? The front is 1 to 1, but the back has to have less than the original pattern called for, if I'm interpreting this correctly. Also, what kind of fabric is good for that yoga waistband - I think I heard 10% spandex, but I've never seen that amount in any of the fabrics I've shopped for. Is it some kind of athletic (or swim?) specialty fabric? Thank you again for a great video!
I love the idea of an elasticated back waistband so this video will really help me. Do you think this technique would work with the Love Notions Duet trousers in a woven fabric if I didn't put in the back darts? I know you say it won't work with just any pattern.
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 11 месяцев назад
No it won’t work because not sewing the darts will not give you the ease you need to pull them over the hips.
Karina what is the ratio you use (for the flat front/yoga back) of the measurement of the woven fabric in the back of the garment, to the knit half yoga back waistband? 80-85% of the measurement of the back woven fabric?
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
I explained it in the video. Measure your waist. Measure the flat front. See what the difference is. Take that measurement and take away 1-2” for the elastic in the back :)
Karina, I see most of your pattern pieces are serged. So do you serge them before you start pinning themtogether or do you serge after? Because it looks like it is serged before. I am just getting ready to pull my serger out of the closet after 2 years of being in there and I don't even know where to begin with it. Thank you.
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
If I plan to press the seams open flat, I serge before sewing the seam. If the seam allowance will be together, I sew first and then serge. It’s just what I do but it’s not a rule :)
