I love the 5 struggling plants rule!! I’m definitely in the place where I don’t even feel compelled to buy more plants because I’ve got my hands full and everything ok right now. 😂
@RootingMindfully

Yesss exactly lol I think this mentality develops over time for a lot of people. For some it developed sooner because we went crazy in the beginning. Thank you so much for watching :):):) I am glad that you love my rule. It really does help.

I have a very wise old uncle (94) that told me something life changing. We were talking one day and he said that so many people have to learn that they don't need everything that they see. Admittedly, I was kind of one of those people. If I saw something and loved it, I immediately thought I had to own it. Your number one advice in this video just firmed up the idea he spoke of so many years ago for me! We don't need every danged awesome plant we see. We can admire them and NOT own them. :) Thanks for the reminder!

Great advice. I’m new to plants, just six months in. This is my first winter and I have 63 plants. My husband likes them too and keeps telling me to get some for other areas of our home. I keep telling him about the lighting, humidity and temperatures that don’t work for the plants. I have already learned the things you are talking about. I had lots of plants die before I figured out what I can keep based on my skill level and the environment. Thanks for your help.🤗💕

This advice is honestly so important - esp. the ones about the size of your collections and when to better wait to buy new plants. Thanks to another lockdown in December all the stores closed down, as well as the hardware store of my fiancée. So they pretty much gave away most of their plants for at least 50-70% off their regular price and even gave away plants for free to their workers some days later. My collection instantly bumped up from 20ish to 30 plants(and after a current little shopping spree, I am at 35). But that bump to save those plants from literally dying in the shop was honestly more stressful than expected. Luckily I didn't take home any pests, but some of those babies are still struggling a bit. Always own only as much as you can handle is my mantra since then hahaha. Loved your advice and also the atmosphere and calmness you have. ♥ Lots of love from Germany!

Well done, brava! I stopped feeling guilt when a propagation or even a plant dies on you. Having lost my mom, 2 yrs now, and she gifted me with soo many plants. Not going too deep, but I agree with basically not overloading yourself or feel less than because plants are not perfect and we are taking them from places that they thrive in. To be able to care for a plant, ANY plant, is a blessing. Thank you for all this!!! 💚

yes! yes! yes! about everything in this video. the other thing i've noticed about house plants (facebook, but also on reddit) is alot of stress and lack of self confidence. alot of posts 'is this ok?', 'can i repot?', 'is it healthy?', 'what if i do x', 'i got this advice, is it correct?'. plants are supposed to be fun! try things! who cares what the internet thinks! experiment! have fun with it! what works for one person doesn't always work for your circumstances, environment, or your life. for outdoor gardening, its all about trying things and learning by doing, indoor gardening seems to governed by rules. and listen, everyone at one point has killed a plant or even a few, or even a dozen, its ok, its not a baby or a puppy (i know it hurts to hear that, but it needs to be said)
@RootingMindfully
@RootingMindfully 3 года назад
Yes I see a lot of that on Facebook, especially in the groups. Yes growing plants is all trial and error. That is how I learned how to care for plants. You are exactly right. There is no perfect way of doing things.
@rmcandlelight
@rmcandlelight 3 года назад
I started collecting plants and became interested in them about 10 years ago. I learned alot on FB plant groups. Back then plants weren't expensive as they are now. People would even mail you a plant if you were looking in your area and could not find it. Some were even generous and may send the plant to you for free. As I remember plants started to get expensive when the Pilea Pepermoides became the it plant. Prices started going up. Then the Variegated Monstera was the it plant. Started like $65 and went up and up. Since then all the large leaf plants cost $$$. Everybody started getting interested in plants. Prices are crazy now. It's alot of competition on who has what. I don't have a Variegated Monstera but I would like one and will never pay $$$ for one. If I did and if one leaf start to die I would panic and probably wouldn't enjoy it worry about how much money I spent and scared it would die on me. Plants are suppose to bring us joy and give us comfort as they thrive and grow. As plants become unpopular that's when I buy them. I bought a nice philodendron Birken at Walmart. Thanks for your tips ❤️👍🏾
@RootingMindfully
@RootingMindfully 3 года назад
Yea I am definitely not buying these expensive plants. Especially because I don’t want them to die on me like you said, but also because at the end of the day it is still a plant and that is a lot of money. I did happen to buy my plants when they were cheaper and that is what I recommend to everyone.

Great video, and it really needed to be said. I see so many people showing their plant mail,and big buggies of plants . Then they complain about not wanting To buy a humidifier , distilled water or grow lights!!! Then blame the plant when it dies🙄. Ive been growing houseplants for over 25 years , and now its easier to research each plant BEFORE you buy to see if you can meet its needs.

The thing with not wanting to get rid of older plants is a little more complicated. It's easy to say that if you don't wear something, get rid of it. But if you've had a plant for like 15 years, and it's always been good to you, it feels more like abandoning a pet. I recently got rid of a plant that just outgrew my capacity. It had been thriving for 13 years and I knew the only spot I had in my new home that could support that size wouldn't give it enough light so after a lot of consideration and finding a good home I got rid of it without any guilt. But I had similar situations where somebody who clearly had no idea what they were doing with more finicky plants came and picked up a plant I loved but couldn't support anymore and it broke my heart to think I might be sending it off to its death after all that time and everything it gave me all those years. I've gotten better about getting rid of plants, but I understand if people feel guilty giving up on little living things that made them happy at one time.
@RootingMindfully
@RootingMindfully 3 года назад
I didn't say anything about getting rid of a plant that you like or means something to you. The message was to get rid of plants that you don't have the right conditions for or plants that don't suit you because it is better to part ways than to neglect it or get overwhelmed trying to care for it.

Truth!! I suppose it’s a live and learn sort of thing. Over time you learn what plants you like and what they need. My plant collection is very curated. Whenever I buy one, I buy it specifically for a space and do thorough research before I buy it. Calatheas stress me out because I know I can’t give them what they need, so I don’t keep them anymore. You are right about the five plant rule. What it truly means is you are not paying attention and are literally killing plants. Not to mention if you simply have an insect problem that has possibly infected them all. Perhaps you do not have enough time to take care of them. You can keep a plant for years however. I had two mass canes (bloomed many times) that got too big like small trees on a landing after 20 years. I finally cut them and am propagating them as we speak. The pieces are doing well rooting in water. Finally overwatering is the temple of doom....:)

LOVE THIS! I just went through that cycle of having so many plants I wanted but feeling overwhelmed. Ended up purging 1/4 of my collection because they were struggling, just not as exciting, or I knew I can always get another one when I have more space/capacity to keep them happy. I feel sooo much better and my plants all look so much happier!

I agree on your 5 rules. We’ve all been caught in the trap. I just think more plants higher chance of pests. I have been a plant lady way before all this hype. My plants that I have had for years are the most common and are gorgeous. I really don’t want these special beauties getting pests. I’ll keep my collection to a manageable minimum. Thank you for some sound advice. 💚

I think it is all personal preference I don't think of my plants as a "collection" I just buy plants that speak to me and bring me joy. Some people only want a handful of plants, some people have hundreds. I've seen apartments and homes that are lush and full of plants and I honestly find that absolutely beautiful and some people like the minimalistic look. There is nothing wrong with a little amount or a lot. If you want to buy a bunch of different varieties and are willing to learn how to care for them, suppliment lighting and humidity that's fine. When I got more plants they did better together and thrive off eachother. Do what makes you happy, don't listen to what others think

#4 hit home for me. I wait a long time before giving some plants away or discarding the bad ones. I’m trying to be better about unloading the plants that are taking space vs enjoying them. For example, I went from 3 Monstera deliciosas down to 1. I’m so much happier now.

True word 👏🏽. This lines up with my goals this year for my collection. I love where you said it’s okay to part with a plant if it no longer brings joy. I have two plants in my collection right now that absolutely sparks no joy but I am holding on to them for sentimental reasons. But after watching this video I won’t feel too guilty for parting with them 😉. Thanks for sharing.

Hahaha I do have a Tasmanian tree fern. However, that is because I'm Tasmanian and I've been living in the US my whole adult life, so when I saw I could grow a tree fern at home I got super excited. So far it's doing well. I bought it in summer and it's been doing okay over winter. I love your approach to indoor plants. I'm really trying to treat mine as building a beautiful space - it's different from what I expected, because a number of my plants really do better in this climate with some outdoor time in the summer, so I can't just have the lush look I wanted all year round without overbuying, which I don't really want to do.
@RootingMindfully
@RootingMindfully 3 года назад
Ohhh that is an interesting plant for sure. Well I take my plants out in the summer and my home looks more bare in the mean time but my plants love it outside and when they come back inside they are bigger and better. It can be lush it will just be a constant change for your collection.

Styling options are also another way to think outside the box and keep even the most basic plants interesting. I have a couple of huge "plain" jade pothos that I adore. I have one hung up and trailing down to the floor. I have another one with huge leaves growing up a trellis on my balcony. Pothos are easy (for me. lol) but it was still a lot of work get them that happy and lush.

for me it was sort of the opposite of 1 of the points being mentioned. I love plants and trees and so on, but in my home had very little of them. because I had so little I kept forgetting them or not being consequent in the care. then I got a bunch of new plants to get my house more green and I don't forget them anymore and check on them all twice a week. my mind works on seeing it and when a wall looks green it's seen. like that it keeps my attention and I go around the house to check them all. I had a bit bad luck as with one plant came mourning flies and now it's a plague. need to deal with that. got carnivores plants for them but they aren't catching enough so I guess I need to step over to those bugs that eat the larvae of mourning flies. as it's getting really insane and annoying. in every little puddle of water they do mass suicide. including in a glass that I am about to drink from. very strange creatures.
@RootingMindfully
@RootingMindfully 3 года назад
Ohhhh that sounds weird and annoying. Have you used and systemics or insecticides?
@BrendasArt
@BrendasArt 3 года назад
@@RootingMindfully hey thanks for reacting 😊 unfortunately and fortunately at the same time ( as pesticides kills also the good bugs ) I can't use pesticides as I have sweet water turtles in my home and it's winter. they are very sensitive to cold and can't use such stuff with animals inside. it won't help much either with mourning flies as it only kills the mature flies. but they lay eggs that become larvae in the potting soil. they nibble from the plant roots and eventually pop into a mourning fly and the cycle begins over and over. After a mourning fly layed her eggs she and he, all of them, dramatically kill themselves in a puddle of water. pesticides won't kill the larvae so it needs to be repeated till all are gone and it's easy to miss one as they are very tiny and can hide in places where the pesticide won't do much. in the end only a bug that eat the larvae is removing the problem adequately. but getting those bugs is dooming the bugs to their dead of starvation as eventually they eaten all the larvae in the soil and they die. goes against my emphatic compassionate soul but I will find a solution so it doesn't conflict with my soul 😊. probably removing all the soil and get new one that hasn't been infected with the larvae. in spring it's a good time to do that. warm enough to go outside for it.

That is crazy. So many sellers have those strings for a ridiculous amount of money, which is crazy because they can grow really fast in the right conditions and they propagate pretty easily. At least you didn't fall for that.
