Totally obsessed with all the snarky comments but just need to remind all you viewers that this is just a video based around the idea that plants will fall in and out of fashion whether we like or not & to simply learn from them (and save your $$ !!). Kudos if you don’t follow plant trends - me neither - but that’s not what this video is about.

There’s a podcast by Any Little Thing that recently was uploaded talked about plant trends . There’s actually historians who have focused on this and talk about house plant trends have been happening for a long time and they specifically talk about the history of orchids . Highly recommend! It’s a short episode and worth listening to

You’re equating “trends” with distribution and supply constraints. That’s why you fail at assessing the state of the market.

Was surprised by the Philo Brandi, but you're right, things become trendy then fall out of style pretty quickly. BUT I GOTTA SAY you introduced me to tetrastigma voinierianum & I'm hella surprised that that plant hasn't blown up! It's my #1 wishlist plant & I'm picking up a 10" pot tomorrow!!! This x1000 I feel like others need to have the "trendy" plants in order to be accepted by this community. Its really weird, but plants are plants imo. I find it really cringe that others in this community are willing to shell HUNDREDS on plants as if it were to make them the "almighty of all plants", like, what? I get it, if you have the money, spend it. But why on 2 tiny leaves? 🤔

I was taking it as even if you love it maybe wait to see what price it is if it's trending when it stops (or see how long ago it may of been trending to check potentially inflated price) 😅 unfortunately I don't have hundreds to spend on a plant no matter how much I love it 😭 one day maybe 💕

Thats certainly the case for some, but I think they also do it for the content when you need to keep creating videos. Content creators and amateur reviews can be helpful for people who don't know much about certain thing and for that I'm thankful! We don't need to copy them though

Its also okay if anyone else is in that phase of their plant journey where they want to buy the hype ones. THAT IS OKAY. Yeah, I think it's a very specific term in this case. When he says "on trend", he means that a store can increase the price because demand is high. That's all it means, though. Like, I think pilea stopped trending because it's easy and fast to propagate, not because people don't like it. Propagation is unique to plants, so plant trends will behave a little differently.

in the plant community are from time to time (or mostly all the time) plants, that are for whatever reason really hyped. maybe like an artist or movie etc. a few month THIS plant is the hottest shit like Bridgerton isTHE hottest shit and everybody wants to own it. and after everyone has one or if it is highly available the trend is gone. i'm a bit generalizing and exagerating, but in Germany (where I live) in the plant community I'm experiencing a lot, like I said, monthly another plant is the current IT Plant and everyone wants or gets it. momentarily it is the syngonium red spot tricolor, and of course the (in my opinion shitty ugly) philo pink princess and monstera adansonii variegaty. which are sold for so ridicously high prices

If you're an avid pothos grower, you probably know this, but in case you dont: In the wild, pothos plants climb on trees. If you buy a moss pole and tie short pothos vines to it, it will eventually attach to and climb up the pole. As the plant climbs, it will begin producing larger and larger leaves, eventually leaving you with giant, gorgeous plant.

Funny how each of those plants is exactly what my local facebook plant trade group is asking for the most. Also, I remember my mom having a Pilea peperomioides when I was a kid, mid 80's or so. They are also in the old Reader's Digest? houseplant books. Or a book about indoor greenhouses? It was a really old book anyway. I'd have to see if I can find which book in my collection. They used to be very popular way back when in California. They have been in the US for a *long* time. (they remind me of Minor's Lettuce) A local greenhouse was selling them in 4 in pots for $25 last week. It's funny how plants fall in and out of popularity with each generation.

I like to find new and interesting plants as much as anyone else, so I understand that in a small way I contribute to houseplant trends. However, I hate how much emphasis there is on “trends dying” or “plants going out of style.” I wish we could all just appreciate the beauty of even the simplest, cheapest, most readily available plants. One of my favorite plants is a pothos that was gifted to me by my grandmother because it is beautiful, dependable, easy, and has that sentimental value. I always try to default to supporting smaller, local growers and plant shops, but I do appreciate that these varieties have been made more accessible to the people who love the plants just because they’re pretty and interesting plants-not just because they’re “rare.”

In Canada, it’s impossible to find a philodendron brandtianum... Bought mine at an auction though, 3 leaves for 75$ 😅

Great video Nick! It’s cool to see how quickly these plants went in and out of hyped trends. A lot of decor channels I follow are doing 2021 trend predictions that I find super interesting. I’d love to see what your predictions are for the upcoming plant trends!

My Pilea Pepperomioides wasn’t purchased because of a trend. I didn’t even know it was popular. It caught my eye, it was different from so many of the things I’ve seen before. I genuinely fell in love with it like with my other plants. They were all purchased, grown or propagated because they sparked something in me. I really wish people would stop treating living things as a fad. Let someone who is genuinely interested in caring for it, care for it.

I've just joined a facebook group and I'm giving away propagation's to anyone who wants to give them a good home. Some plants are just hard to propagate and take time but otherwise I do not understand why they are overpriced. I don't have a variegated monstera but if I had I'd give plenty of it away. I don't know what to think of these people trying to make a few quid out of this, maybe because I'm older and for all the years I've been gardening we've been happy to share. It is one of the nicest parts of all this. Still, having an online community should make it easier to spread the love not grift the prices up. What am I missing?

I remember when the fiddle leaf fig first came into Vogue again. I found a little one, 4” pot, at the Bronx Botanical Gardens. I don’t remember the price, probably around $15. It’s now bigger than me and thriving. My only problem with it is finding places to put it in my dark house where it will get enough light.

Hi Nick , I moved from a rental and I took a couple of Fidel leaf fig cuttings from a very large one that was growing out front of this property , perseverance paid off from water propagation waiting for the roots too grow out and transferring them to soil after a long wait they are both growing beautifully in different homes as my daughter has one and I have the other 🙌🌱🪴👌🧤👒🇦🇺🦘🐨🤩 thanks for your videos 💗🌱

To hell with trendy, give me an easy grower that is beautiful and I'll be happy. It's a bonus that prices for most have come down. I like the brandy but they're still expensive here in Canada, so I'll wait until prices are more reasonable. Thanks for the video, it's this kind of content that is interesting and fun to watch.

I just recently started indoor gardening and got a pilea about two weeks ago... I loved how it looked and had no idea that it was rare in the US only like 5 years ago?? How were we missing out on them? I’m already propagating mine :))

I bought a 4" pot of ZZ Raven for $20 online. I KNEW Costa Farms would release them eventually but I bought it anyway. When I went to Lowe's a couple of weeks ago I bought a FULL 6" pot of the Costa ZZ for $18 😆 I like both of them 😏 Now I want a variegated string of hearts but I am NOT paying $15+ for a 1 node un-rooted cutting 😒

I was happy hearing you talk about the fiddle leaf fig because I bought a small one with that exact intention! I couldn’t imagine spending 300$ on a plant that was almost certainly going to die when I bring it home. They don’t like to be moved so it’s best to grow a small one where you have it and nurture it into being a beautiful tree. I have clipped off a few dying lower leaves, but mine is growing great :)

Such a great morning, when I see you have a new video up! It’s so funny to hear you talk about the birkin. I got one last spring and named mine Philbir once I learned that it was named after those bags (how pretentious!). I never would have paid a lot of money for it, but I do think a birkin, the way they’re supposed to look, are quite lovely, but mine is wonky as heck and throws out all kinds of irregularly variegated leaves (definitely a Philbir:). Now I love it for its wonkiness. It’s exactly what a wannabe fancy plant in my home should be. 😊

I am so over the insta hype of always the most unusual, rare, and most importantly expensive plants! The plant community was so nice until a few years ago. I like the occasional rare plant, too. But growing plants should be the opposite of consumerism. I think part of the problem is that some "plantfluencers" now have their own shops of relatively expensive plants, so they are invested in hyping the hype.
@rupert909
@rupert909 3 года назад
how does the fact that some people swoon for rare plants, affect you as a houseplant lover? surely when bob from down the road orders a rare aroid from across the globe, this doesn't affect your ability to grow and propagate your golden pothos. if someone wants to pursue expensive plants, that's great. if someone wants to enjoy the growing experience of cheaper plants, that's great. as long as you're not hurting anyone, you should be allowed to own whatever plants you want.

Also if you let it climb up, its leaves will be more elongated as it matures. The mature leaves look more like the leaves of P. billietiae.

I'm new to the indoor house plant community. I started because my yard is so brown it made me depressed. So I decided to bring life indoors. I've only purchased what speaks to me. I have to make sure they are fairly easy to care for until I get the hang of all this. I'm hopeful this will go well and I'll have a happy plant family by the spring.
