. I played nine holes at Gassan Legacy Golf Course in lamphun, Thailand...with a mid handicap golf ball - just a two piece with a surlyn cover. I was expecting very little out of it because I am so used to playing urethane golf balls.

Actually, I like this golf ball. It's the Inesis Soft 500 and it's $1 a ball from Decathlon. I must admit, I will play these golf balls as much as I can until I actually see any significant performance issues and only then will I change back to urethane.
How to go stress-free on a golf course? Play cheaper balls and never fear losing them. Only by losing the fear, do you stop losing balls. This is science. Believe me.

Matt, I didn't realize that I had the video on 1.25x speed. When the birdie music played I thought it was a hilarious edit you had done, then I realized the speed setting lol You might want to keep that idea in your bag of tricks for editing though :)

There was a round where I pulled out the scuffed up dirty provisional ball on the first tee because I wasn't feeling great about driving that day and didn't want to immediately lose a new ball in the woods. I started playing great for like 4 holes, so on the 5th tee I pulled out the new ball because I was confident about my play so far. Immediately lost it in the woods. Went on to play the rest of the round with the same original scuffer ball and had a good day. I was never stressed about losing it, and I never did lose it. Golf is weird.

I play with any ball I find, but use a good ball to put with. Not legal, but not playing in a tournament and I'm not a pro. I'm out for fun on a very penal golf course(easy to lose a golf ball if you're off line). R

I never ever think about losing balls, its always a surprise . I play the $2 Callaway supersoft orange. Tho I also play with my brother who has the eyes of an eagle...I tell him that is the reason I play with him because he always knows where my ball went . He can root out balls the way a Succulent pig can root out Truffles...

I've heard it said that 90% of golfers aren't good enough to see the benefit in using "high performance" (i.e. expensive) golf balls.

This. If you watch ball reviews on youtube you will see that we are literally talking about a 5-10 yard difference with the driver. The biggest difference is on shots about 100 yards and in where the premium balls tend to spin quite a bit more, but you won't really notice that unless you are a very good ball striker that can create a lot of spin on short shots.

It’s tough because I’m an avg golfer but pretty good at chipping so a premium ball only has value in my eyes on pitching and chipping. Putting I prefer a 2 piece callaway supersoft

Marketing hype mixed with overestimation of our own ability. I have done the experiment many many times before playing with a premium ball like the ProV1 and a less than premium ball (generally half the price) like a Srixon AD333 or similar and found that over the course of 18 holes my scores are either very close or the same. There are 2 classes of golfer out there. There are good players and bad players. Bad players are not good enough to extract the value from playing a premium a ball and good players are good enough to adjust their game for the specific ball they are playing. I classify myself as a reasonably low handicap golfer (my handicap is below 1) and have found that the lower priced balls go shorter off the driver (by about 10 - 15m) but tend to go a little longer off the irons and roll out a little on the greens. But in the course of a round, I'll hit just as many good or bad shots irrespective of the golf ball I use. Personally I do use a premium ball but only ever buy them on special when the large retailers or pro shops have sales. That lasts me a year or more because I don't lose too many.

“I'll hit just as many good or bad shots irrespective of which ball I use” Ain't that the truth. +1 A good shot is a good shot, a bad shot is a bad shot, no matter the ball.

I'm playing these at the moment. I really enjoy them. They perform really well. Funnily enough I actually enjoy the feel off the putter face and I putt pretty well with them. I also love the colours because on the inside I'm still just a kid playing with big boy toys on the golf course🤣🤣

Thanks for this as it confirms what I have been saying for a long time: they are all pretty round and designed to do pretty much the same thing. Part of the enjoyment I get is seeking out the best bang for the buck equipment and blowing it past/out-performing the golf snobs that insist on playing the latest and greatest. I have had a teaching pro tell my playing group: "You don't need a ball that stops, you need a ball that goes..." Think about it, seriously, how often are your approach shots past the pin.?.? Save some money. Play what you find/afford. Get out and enjoy the game. simple.

Srixon Soft Feel to me, is the best balance of price, feel and durability. It's better to fill you bag with one type of ball for distance control and for me this is it. Notice also how many models of golf balls come and go every year, but the Soft Feels are a mainstay in the market. When you can lock in on one type of ball, your club choices become more automatic, enabling you to enjoy what Matt calls stress free golf.

I picked up Wilson Staff Duo Soft+ balls ($25) after seeing the TXG guys test them out. The feel is insanely soft. It is what I originally thought Chromesoft would feel like. The distance off the tee is reduced only by about 5-10 yards at most for me (265 vs. 275), but iron distance is virtually the same. They feel amazing. Great ball. I’ll have to check out the Inesis.

Seen a couple of your vids now. Love the quality of shot trace and pro style hole stats at the top corner.👍 As for my ball preference, I usually can't tell much difference either so I tend to like playing noodles. Decent feel to me and super cheap. Plus it can be good for a laugh on the course to play with my noodle 😜. That's what it's all about in the end right? Fun!

I bought a couple buckets of used balls a few years ago. I got a bucket of Titleist that had Pro V1 and Pro V1x and Bridgestone which had a mix of B330 and RX regular and S versions. I found that I liked the B330s the best out of all of them. I don't worry about losing a ball since they were used. Unless you play often and are a lowerish handicap or a straight hitter it's pretty pointless to spend $50 on a dozen white pills when you are losing 4-5 a round. I play courses that have some deep rough and golf balls get lost in plain sight. Couple weeks ago I found 5 balls before I found mine. One of my favorite golf balls of all time was a Titleist wound 90 that I found. I think the most important thing is to find something compatible with your game, if you play bump and run on the greens you don't want a high spin ball and vice versa.

It's such an interesting approach to golf balls. I always play with used / second hand balls and I have no complaint at all, actually it is better cz you have a wider espectrum of what a ball can do in your game and also helps you decide when to use which one. DO NOT STICK TO ONE HIGH-END GOLF BALL! just have fun and figure out how & when to use your balls.

Have played two of my best rounds with really cheap rock hard balls (Pinnacle Golds). In both cases it got down to adapting my play to having less spin on approach shots, i.e. calculating for roll out instead of hop n' grab. Then there are other cheap balls which both perform and feel excellent for me as the Wilson DX2.
@James_Vaughn

Technique trumps cover material in my experience. I like to play urethane covered balls, but I have also played some good rounds with LaddieX, and Wilson Zip, both at less than $20 for 2 dozen. I even had some good rounds with the super cheap Nitro balls that are $17 for a box of 48. You are right, it's probably just head worms causing me to spend more, concerned about quality control with the cheaper balls.

I think we ALL WANT to play well with high-end urethane balls is because they LOOK and FEEL so AMAZING!! I think you hit the hammer on the head there though Matt...97-98% of shots on the course don't require a "tour spin," and as you mentioned, the one (and probably only) area budget balls would struggle are on those touchy/delicate or high spin shots that need to bite. What you said about certain balls getting in our head is SO TRUE! I have this thing where I always find Callaway golf balls....and they go straight to the backyard chipping bank....never did trust a Callaway ball...

I've been playing the refurbished Prov1's from Walmart for years. $20/doz works for me. I don't care if someone else's kid has drawn all over the ball or even if there's the odd blemish. My game has improved to the point where I can play an entire round with the same ball. That doesn't mean I'm springing $60 for new ones. No way, whattaripoff! May try the Kirklands though. Great video.
@y2dungur
@y2dungur 4 года назад
Like you said in the video, the differences are mainly on controlled shots (ie. pitches & bunkers) as the tendency of 'releasing' more is higher. These rolls in my case mess my landings & can catch me offguard quite a lot, especially on chips just like in 5:40. Funnily, Pro V/VXs screw up my putting in terms of pacing, either came short or way long. Hence, my ball preference is Wilson Duo/DX3 Spin/Soft Spin; non-urethane with great spin rate.

if your hitting consistent just stick with a ball, some will have distance differences. you may notice if you play found balls and play a course or two a lot. last ball I was upset about hitting OB was only cause I made it through several rounds with that same ball.
@erikjoven2388
@erikjoven2388 4 года назад
its a good point - for anyone who is not a pro - and cannot hit the same shot over and over with pro levels of consistency then the ball overall matters very little as long as its a reasonable ball. A ball is just not going to have a significant impact on the game/score of an average golfer - but worrying about losing that ball certainly CAN impact your game if you're filled with dread every time you stand over the ball.

@jd131m
@jd131m 4 года назад
For me personally the other important part is compression rating. If you have a slow club speed then you usually want a low compression ball which also usually has a surlyn cover. Surlun covers do have a softer feel to them as well as lower spin which would be good for someone with a slice/hook. I like the way surlyn low compression balls feel around the green but I have around a 105-110 club speed on the driver so the question is do I give up a little distance for feel on a low compression ball or do I gain distance but add spin which is not good for my slice? It's all about how the individual feels using a ball and balancing all aspects but more than anything, it's a mental thing. Do you feel good/confident about hitting the ball while standing over it? I believe that that's the most important thing.

I play the Titleist NXT Tour (Grade A 2nd hand) and I've also played the Inesis 500 (Hot PInk!) and really like both, the 500 feels (I think it's more sound) slightly harder but more than happy to play and putt with both. I've played (found) Pro V1s and I don't like them off the putter face, just feel far to soft IMO. Plus as you say, when I spank one OB it's not a big stress, though my current aim is to finish 18 holes with just one ball, just for the satisfaction! :)

Matt....So are Srixon balls considered “cheap” balls in Thailand? The z-star sells for the same cost as Prov-1 here in USA. I find they perform equally as well with the Prov-1, and maybe are a hair longer. And they produce consistent results. I think the best thing for mid to high handicappers to do is not necessarily playing only cheap balls instead of expensive balls. But to pick a ball and stick with it. Having a ball that does what you expect is more important in my opinion.

I like the Urethane cover golf balls and use them for comps, but I use $6 a dozen Nitro Surlyn cover balls for practice. I don't tend to lose them just wear them out.

I get 2 dozen for 30 bux! Wilson Staff 50 Elite. Not a tough cover, but less stress when I lose them. Last year I had a dozen Titleist NXT Tour, 50 bux for the dozen and stressed out over each one I lost. I hate losing balls. The 50 elite's make for way less stress of losing them because they are cheap and a decent ball overall and until I'm a sigle digit handicap, I'll stick with the cheap ball!

I score the same regardless of ball, but I like the look of Pro V1 x and TP5x so I buy them second hand off ebay for about 1/3 the price! They're not amazingly new but they don't stay in my bag long enough to worry about it!

Isn’t the Kirkland $1 a ball as well? It is in the states.

I judge the success of any game by the least number of balls lost. I have been known to leave the course before the 18th having put several in succession into water thereby running out of balls. My bag is already too heavy to carry enough balls for 18 so now limit myself to 9 holes.

For me the Srixon Z-Star and the Srixon Ad-333 have the best feeling out there. I Love both balls! However I like the Inesis 500 and tour900 as well. Very good balls!

A lot of people forget that a ball like a Pro v1 you need min 105mph club head speed with the driver to compress the ball. So the expensive ball can actually cost you distance

Assuming your talking about driver club head speed, bc average tour clubhead speed for a 3 iron is 98 mph and wedge is 82 mph. You compress the ball with irons.

I'd still choose the tour 900, think it's a quality ball and it's cheaper than the surelyn balls I was buying, mostly callaway supersoft or ad333.

Only notice the lack of spin on short game shots. Only really matters if you play on really firm greens

You should play Wilson ZIP balls.

I've played so many rounds solo with nobody around, I frequently play 2 or 3 golf balls. I'm a low 80's player (well now that I am playing less) so not great, but not a hack. Frankly the best cheap golf ball I've tested is the old Noodle Long and Soft, made by Taylor Made (but you have to read fine print to know this). Longer off the tee than Chrome Soft and less spin, but enough spin for my approach shots to end up really close to my green impact ball marks. Driver yardage seems on par with the ProV1. There are balls that really suck, the latest trials being the Wilson Duo Soft. I gave the rest away to kids to practice with and felt bad. Instead of anecdotal accounts though, robotic testing would very quickly settle this, but you don't see such a simple approach, because then everyone would know 98% of this is emotional marketing. Can you imagine: My ball goes 2 yards further off the tee and spins 5% more into greens, that's why I cost 3 times as much.

I play the Noodle. Feels great, goes really far, and is cheap. I've collected 100 titleists that I hit on my driving range at home. I won't play with them. Too inconsistent.
