This is a story of a DIY trekker - Santrupth K, who went to Hampta Pass DIY style and was hit by Acute Mountain Sickness. He was trekking parallel to the Indiahikes team and our team was able to help him at the right time. Here he shares his experience about what happened and what he learnt on Hampta Pass - a DIY trek.
"Quietly, under our feet, trekking is changing in our country. More and more trekkers are taking to the mountains. But they are trekking differently. They are trekking on their own without the support of any organisation. They are trekking the Do-It-Yourself way.
DIY trekking is not new in our country. In fact, much before Indiahikes started, DIY was the only way I trekked.
Today, many years later, I realise how different trekking has become. While at Indiahikes, we have consciously tried to recreate the experience of DIY treks, it can never be the same as a true DIY trek.
This is why at Indiahikes, we have launched DIY treks", Arjun Majumdar, Founder and CEO shares.

Indiahikes should consider one day as acclimatization day at basecamp for each trek. Most people travel from lower altitude region to relatively higher altitude of basecamp, tired because of the long travel and then start a trek the very next day. Introducing an extra acclimatization day could help trekkers to acclimatize well with a short hike around the base camp. This would help to avoid risks of AMS significantly. Trying to squeeze the duration of a trek within a week while suggesting trekkers to go on a preventive course of Diamox is completely no brainer.

I was hit by AMS in my Miyar Valley trek back in July 2022, and I can relate to Santhrupt’s experience - the nausea, the acidity, the puking - it’s a jarring experience. I pinpointed this to a lack of working out on my part. I can run good, and a single run for the fitness test gave me confidence that I could do the trek, but that was a grave mistake! I’ll never trek without a good physical fitness ever. Respect the mountains, else the mountains will teach you lessons the hard way!

Indeed an Eye opener..... Lesson learnt... Associate smallest of the symptoms to AMS up in the mountains and identifying it is the key.... As Santrupth mentioned the videos made by the IndiaHikes team gives us all the minutest of the information required to be prepared in the mountains... Thanks to India Hikes ❤️

Suffered from AMS while going from Manali to Leh by bus😮‍💨 Was fine till Keylong , in fact stayed there for a night. The next day while going from Keylong to Leh it hit me! Maybe due to the high passes…The most uncomfortable moments of my life! Will never forget..

Thank you! I am planning for a Himalayan trek in December, and trying to prepare myself for it. This video is going to be a big learning for me when it comes to mental prep. I like when he said he would like to continue DIY trek 😀 Kudos bro🤟

Many thanks to Mr Santhrupt and Indiahikes for showing us the testimony of the trekker himself about altitude sickness. Very useful and it is a must see video for any who wishes to trek to high altitudes. On a given day AMS can hit any person whether you are a experienced or a novice trekker that doesn't matter. Understanding the symptoms of AMS is the gist of the above video.

I have been to Sandakphu( twice) and very close to Gurdongmar lake(which is around 4900 m above sea level). But didn't have altitude sickness at first time. When when I went to Sandakphu for second time , I have severe headache for two nights straight.

What is the course of diamox taken usually when you notice AMS ?
@suhassaya2442
@suhassaya2442 Год назад
Hi Vipul If you notice the early symptoms of AMS, then taking one full tablet of 250 mg is recommended. There are cases when if the body gets enough rest, acclimatises well and you keep monitoring, the trekker can proceed. Otherwise, descending down is the best way to lose altitude. There are ways in which you can prevent AMS and to go on a course of Diamox before starting the trek. It does not guarantee. But helps with acclimatization, reducing the chances of your body being hit by AMS. Read more about Diamox and the benefits here - indiahikes.com/benefits-of-using-diamox-to-deal-with-ams

Could HMS hit us even when we are slowly ascending and watching our pace ?
@suhassaya2442
@suhassaya2442 Год назад
Hi Mathav Going slow and steady is actually a very good practice to follow. Forming a nice rhythm and not pushing yourself too much is the key. Especially in the Indian Himalayas where forced ascents are not avoidable when trekking from one campsite to another.
