I made several mods to my workmate. with each Mod, I was more in love with it. i finally installed a stove on the work mate. After that I informed the Mrs. that she was no longer needed and sent her packing. Life has never been better. Thanks Mate.
Thanks, it is rarely off of my workmate. The afterthoughts are there to help others do a better job - or we' will all make the same mistakes :-) Here's a playlist ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9es8mVs7mj0.html for all my Workmate mods.
I used my old B&D WORKMATE for my very 1st workbench. I had an old table top. It was proper hardwood and I used my workmate for the underneath of the bench. I had it for ages but got sick of it in the end. The clamping on them is good anyways. I bought a small Magnusson bench vise ages ago and only fitted it this week. I must have had the thing for 6 months sat in the shop. It's garbage tbf. I put some soft wood on there for the jaws but it holds stock ok for planing edges. That's really it. Iwant to learn how to make my own hardwood screws leg vise. Everything made from wod. U know if there is a home DIY way of making tapered screws out of wood?? U have a good knowledge my friend. I'm only really learning now. I send more time in the shop now.
Ah I missed that, sorry, they are simply 2 large M12 bolts, the hex head just fits through the wide part of the slot in the frame (you have to line it up) and the thread fits in the narrow part of the slot. Just tighten the bolt slowly until you get a good fit.

It has a vice in the middle, which is really useful, great for 2x2, or pipes, but I wouldn't call it a woodworking vice, the jaws are only 22mm thick, and gripping something from the middle of the bench is not always convenient. The workmate vice is better used with the dogs and dog holes for clamping. The addition of the woodwork vice gives me a lot more options.
The vice on the workmate is general purpose, but not good for some jobs, the wood vice has a wide clamping area, Vs the workmates 18mm ( with a V groove) so holding down wide boards is not as stable, for instance when I was drilling a large hole in 4x4 for my Cyclone shop vac mod, the wood vice was a better choice.
