I love my workmate. It is portable and sturdy, but it is hard to move around the shop. Wheels, call them casters or castors if you will, will help move it easily, so I have added them.
My title says simple, and they would be if you just use hinges attached to the bottom of the bench. I wanted to see if I could do it without drilling holes in the bench, so the bracket I made made it more complicated.

That sure beats dragging it across the floor, and having one or more of the bottom support legs fold up. Great job. Blessings to you and your family

Ha, you got that right. You must have had that experience yourself. Have a good one.

Piece of ply the footprint of the workmate, plus a 2" timber edging to keep the workmate on the ply. Locking wheels at each corner. Wheel into position, lock wheels. You can lift off and fold legs to reduce height or to store away. Ply also catches things falling through. Job done. This is an over engineered partial fail and the bolts wont last long lifting and dropping it, when tapped into end grain.

Your idea will work just fine. So does mine. Perhaps you didn't notice I already have mdf on the lower shelf to catch stuff. The 2" edging on the plywood would make the base, which I already trip on, even wider. The number 1 spec was for the wheels to be out of the way. In oak, tapped end grain is plenty strong. Plus, there is zero tensile force and near zero shear force on those bolts. They will be there at least until I retire from woodworking. Thanks for watching.

That wheel set up is nothing short of genius!

You are welcome. I love how easy it is to move around now. Did you see my video where I replaced the top? It was video #3. Thanks for watching.

Cool idea. I've never seen any tap wood, though. Seems counterintuitive, but it's sure fun to use a tap set if you have one. :)

Thanks. True normally, but threads in oak work fairly well.

Add some drops of fast glue (cyanoacrylate) bevor threading into the hole and let it cure. It stabilizes the fibers.

At timeline 8:59....on the right side, underneath your picture with a mask....seems it's coming apart......why not simply put it on a base with 4 lockable caster-wheels underneath?....seems that would be a lot less work to build.

Really cannot see the point in this, The workmate folds up to make it easy to carry and to store!
@RCWorks
@RCWorks 4 года назад
Well, mine is not easy to carry. It is heavy, and I hit my shins while doing so. Maybe the newer, cheaper ones are lighter. Of course, I don't know which you have. Mine is an original. Second, I don't have time to fold it up and put it away. I use it constantly, and I need it here and there and then out of the way of something else. This is becoming my living, and my shop is a dedicated space. If a person works in the garage, and has to make room for cars, absolutely fold it up and out of the way. Thanks for watching.

It's for moving it while it's in use. When you are working in a small space, you find yourself moving things around a lot. And I believe many people who use workmates work in small spaces.

Great mod best one with wheels I've seen, does it stop you folding it up?
@RCWorks
@RCWorks 3 года назад
Thanks, and good point. I can't fold up the legs. I didn't think about it because I never do. I use it a lot all around the shop and never put it away; the wheels make that easier.

Great idea!!! Congratulations! QUESTION: What kind of machine is that at 04:00 for cutting the threads? Thanks in advance for your reply. Kind regards

Thanks. That is a Hand Tapper. I got it from Grizzly. It's great. It keeps the tap straight and doesn't wear me out.

For tapping into the wood, I would have chucked the tap into a cordless drill. With the predrilled holes the tap will self align and go in straight.
@MatzeMaulwurf
@MatzeMaulwurf 2 года назад
@@artie191 as the flesh drill fits into the pre drilled hole in the girls. No need to align. Self aligning. Works every time. Lubricants are important. The girls I drill are self lubricating. Like it 🥰

Great idea. Constructive criticism: the part where you were tapping the 8 holes for the casters was repetitive and boring. One clip of one hole would’ve done the trick. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Anyway, thanks for the idea 👍

Just curious, why tap the holes for bolts? Why not pre-drill and use screws for casters? Great site, enjoy your videos!
@RCWorks
@RCWorks 4 года назад
Thank you for watching my videos. I was out of 3/4" long screws, but I did have 3/4" long bolts. I didnt want to stop working to go to the store, and holes tapped in oak are pretty strong.
