When it still was called Queensday during the reign of Queen Beatrix I often went to the Amsteldijk in Amsterdam where the gay clubs had organised their own alternate version; Every drag queen was showing off their finest costumes. It always was a great atmosphere at those parties. Mind you, it helped not being offended if you had your buttocks pinched by an interested party, even when you're straight; simply accept the validation, tell 'm you're straight, and have a good laugh about it. It never was a problem.

Those were the good old days. Nowadays you're probably gonna get a baseballclub in your neck. Remembrance of the unreplacable iT club, with DJ Jean and DJ Marcello. Brilliant DJ's all the way. That atmosphere will never return, helas🤷. I am straight, but i love the free spirited thinking, which i think, is missing nowadays.

Not only during Queen Beatrix's reign... also during the reign of her mother Queen Juliana and her grandmother Queen Wilhelmina !! It has been "Queen's day" for a very long time.. It is usualy held on the birthday of the current Queen. BUT since Beatrix was born on january 31st and it's pretty cold in the country then, too cold to have an outdoor celebration.. she decided to keep Queen's day on April 30th.. which was her mothers birthday. And now, since Willem Alexander is our King.. it has changed into King's day... and it is on HIS birthday, April 27th !

That day you are allowed to sell whatever play whatever or organize whatever games to enjoy and also make some money. For kids it is supernice to earn some pocket money and also supercute. The negotiation is part of the fun. (Me I negotiate first and then give them full price after anyway)

Throwing eggs is an old punishment from the Middle Ages. if you misbehaved, you had to stand on the scaffold and bystanders were supposed to throw rotten eggs and tomatoes at you. King's Day (when the mother of the current king was still queen, it was called Queen's Day) is an old tradition. Then all kinds of old games are played on the streets, traditional typical Dutch food is everywhere. It is very 'gezellig' . The typical word we use without an accurate translation. It means the total feeling of: warmth, cozyness, being together, recognizability and the feeling that everyone belongs. By the way: never saw an orange peniscover like that. So you are totally safe.... An orange hat will do.

he called it queensday because from 1891 to 2013 it was queensday. and after this king retires someday we will have a queensday again ;)

The Netherlands had four Queens from 1889 until 2013. From 1891 on it was called Koninginnedag (Queensday). King Willem-Alexander came to the throne when his mother Queen (now Princess) Beatrix abdicated on April 30th 2013. From 2014 on Koningsdag (Kingsday) was moved to his official birthday, April 27th. EDIT: about the women peeing everywhere. All around the big cities are special 'krullen' (a special curl like screen where men can pee in somewhat privacy. The women sadly aren't that lucky. And using a porta-potty on this day... NOPE!

Although it is called Kingsday now, I still say Queensday spontaniously whenever the day comes along. It has been Queensday for a really long time. Queen Juliana started it (there where 2 queens before her, Wilhelmina and Emma but they had a different approach towards the people) and after her abdication came Beatrix, so my entire youth it used to be Queensday. It is THE most fantastic day of the year and really boast a lot of happy feelings and memories. It is always a day to look forward to. If you are planning to visit Holland, sorry The Netherlands, in the future, try to plan your visit with the 27th of april within its scope.

The best day of the year, how i missed it the last two years, it's great fun. The king and his family visit one city every year to celebrate together ad the old queen visited 2 city's a day. Everywhere there are street party's and big concerts throughout the country and the day ends with firework parties around the country. You really must visit Amsterdam on this day!

you should check out "John Fealey - Koninginnedag" 😂 There was a show ages ago, "Comedy Factory" and a British comedian is explaining Queensday. The guy is hilarious. He also done 1 about the Albert Heijn, a supermarket here.

1:17 It used to be Queens day for the longest but semi-recently our queen stepped down for the new king to take place so it changed. Alot of people still accidentily call it queens days

Part of the survival guide should be that you're not allowed to go wild peeing in the Netherlands, you het a fine of 140 euro of you pee in the bushes 😂 the woman toilet are always occupied so every group has always one friend that go's to the male toilet and be really creative 😂 it's ussually the friend that drinks the most alcohol

kingsday is the kings birthday party. It is not always celebrated on his or hers birthday. Some kings or queens decided to keep it on the old queens birthday because its in a more favorable season. Preferably spring.

Dutch people do clean their canals btw 😂It’s actually insane how the dutch literally are obsessed with controlling their nature everywhere. They clean and measure their waters every now and then, they know exactly how many trees are in a city, they make bridges for animals to cross over roads and even have a list of the animals going extinct in the Netherlands and for a lot of them know how many there are in the Netherlands.

It's funny to what's this but it's totally the true. We pee in the canals and every street corner we get. Why?? Because there are not enough toilets in the city for thousands off people at one's. There are not enough toilets for women and o this day they drink too much so they use alternatives. Always better then they do it on the street. Even better is not to drink too much at all but yeah alcohol seems t bee needed for some to party or to forget that day or get through the day.
