We start with Savannah monitor diet as the Savannah monitor diet is the single thing mostly done wrong or inaccurate .
Then move onto the Savannah monitor humidity because that's often looked over and not take seriously
Then on to the Savannah monitor substrate . Vitally important for reasons explained in the video
Then the savahhah monitor enclosure explained in detail .
Then onto the amount of Savannah monitor research that's needed

I have had extremely good luck with Savannah monitors, I even hatched one years ago, a very rare feat, believe it or not. Still I recommend something else. Almost ANYTHING else. We have almost 0 idea of what makes these animals tick, or how to care for them properly. Their has never even been a comprehensive study of Savannah monitors in the wild. The very best you can hope for is a 5 year life span, that is poor considering in the wild they can live 15 years. On top of that, expect your first setup (enclosure, light bulbs, bulb holders, substrate, water and food bowls, hides, and food) to cost $400 bucks. Don't forget that your new baby Savannah is 99.999% certain to be wild caught, so 150+ for vet visit plus medicine to get rid of parasites. Now all you have to worry about is the 80% chance it will die before the first year is over. Best to get something, almost anything, else.

@@ReelSpider absolutely agree with this. I wish that people would try to get a black throat monitor, as they are not only close cousins but we also know absolutely everything about them, from breeding to their diet to their habitat. Savannah monitors are such awesome animals but only a captive bred Savannah monitor should be considered as a good start!

Hi. I am doing mixture substrates with mainly topsoil, some coco husk/bark and a small amount of sand for my baby savannah monitor and am considering whether to mix in some cypress mulch (or replace with sphagnum moss). However, there are different views on the use of cypress mulch for reptiles. I saw that you recommended it but your video 3 was years ago. Do you still think it is good?
@thehydra3518
@thehydra3518 4 года назад
So I know they are predominantly insectivorious, however monitor lizards in general are also opertunistic so I agree rodents or smaller vertebrates should be sparing, however savannah monitors are resistant to cobra venom.. That being said, you don't develop an immunity to a certain animal's venom unless its part of you're diet.. In captivity I think it's perfectly fine for once every 2 months isn't going to harm your animal, provided you keep them with their specific needs of the species you own.

@ornatusvaranid
@ornatusvaranid 4 года назад
"The Hydra": I don`t quite understand your logic that an animal is only resistant/immune to another`s venom because it preys on it? The nourishment value of dietary items plus the amount offered needs to be in proportion to the amount of energy used, it`s really as simple as that (invert or vertebrate).
@thehydra3518
@thehydra3518 4 года назад
@@ornatusvaranid you are right I shouldn't have said diet. I should have said specifically the savannah monitor became immune to the cobras venom because of constant interactions in nature. Both have a similar habit of seeking out termite mounds for either food or shelter for example. Due to this, (IN THIS SPECIFIC CASE) one was able to best the other and the lizard became the predator. That probably happened due to the known tenacity of the monitor, either way the Savannah monitor is immune to the spitting cobras venom.. The moral of the story.. The monitor was recorded eating a snake in the wild.. Case and point.. They don't just eat bugs. That's all.

@NORTHERNEXOTICS
@NORTHERNEXOTICS 4 года назад
Sand on its own can be bad if food is just chucked in they may pick up some sand then. Also if there is a nutrient defiaancy in the monitor then he may take in sand which will cause impaction
@ornatusvaranid
@ornatusvaranid 4 года назад
Hi, sand does not cause impaction, subpar conditions do (commonly that means too low temps and possibly humidity). A fully supported captive monitor should have no problems passing small amounts of substrate, that happens very regularly in the wild.
@ReelSpider
@ReelSpider 4 года назад
Last comment for me on this one, I had to have a think on how to put it. #4 you said "8x4x4, and that is absolutely perfect for them." I would rather you had said: 8x4x4, and that really is as small as you can safely do with a monitor this size." We have to remind people that this is an almost 4 foot long animal. That is the equivalent of (roughly) a human living in a 12x6x6. it would be like an American prison cell, but shorter, much shorter, and America has some of the worst prison conditions in the developed world. I would like to add that I recently found your channel, and it has the best information I have seen so far, with quality specimens in quality enclosures, eating quality food under quality lighting. I wish every pet had a handler that cared so much.

What kind of bedding are you using? I find mixing in sand (pet sand, not playground sand) makes digging easier, and digging in sandy soil keeps the fingers free of old shed. Not too much sand, or you wont be able to keep the humidity up easily, you need some fiber in there too.

I had found online to feed them lean ground turkey that way the food is not too fatty and he took too much of it and his neck was very bulged and it looked like he was having a hard time breathing I had to pry his mouth open and take food out I'm wondering if they're like a chicken and or chipmunk and store food or if he was just choking on it he is all fine and safe now and I'm making sure food from now on is smaller pieces and less at a time

Would you be able to suggest some good websites for Savannah monitor keeping? I rescued two, and every website/care sheet I'm finding is saying they can eat rodents and a lot of stuff that's just completely going against what you suggested. Their humidity is about 72, temp of 90 on the basking side, 86 on the cooler side and they have a small swimming area (they're babies BTW). Been giving them crickets and mealwoms sprinkles with D3 and Calcium. (Right now with them being so small, they're both in my 40 gallon reptile enclosere. Plan to separate them here in the next few weeks.)

@@NORTHERNEXOTICS That is a really good time to move him up. You don't want a baby in an enclosure so big you cant fill it up with places to hide, but at 18 inches he needs room to move around, or else he will get fat. In my experience lady Savannah monitors don't want a fat boy, and they NEED a choice in mates... If one isn't noticeably better than the other, she won't want either...

Hey man. I just got a new baby Savannah monitor a month ago. We adopted a fully grown monitor 4 years ago and the guy at the pet store told us to feed him frog legs, chicken hearts and some insects. He was obviously neglected from his previous owners and he turned out to be the best lizard I have ever owned (iguana, bearded dragons etc). So friendly and just happy to be cared for. However I believe that his prior diet and the one we gave him was his demise. No idea how old he was but he was huge. Our new monitor gets only crickets and super worms. Just wondering how much to feed him when he gets to be 4 feet long?? Lol. I would think it would have to be 30 worms every second day and 30 crickets as well. Any suggestions? By the way your guy looks super healthy and content. Good job

Only thing I would say is floor space of any viv meant for a monitor species won't be enough. You need to either house them outside or exercise them in an controlled environment. You can also increase the effective space of the viv buy add ledges and shelving around the perimeter as low level height can effectively increase the usable space.

You can't seriously say that savannah monitors only eat insects in the wild. They will eat anything that can be overcame. As well as small amounts of fruits and flowers, as well as the doing of other animals. It's just how it is, friend

Hey man so I dont have any reptile stores around me and unfortunately I had to buy a monitor from petco...... I bought him 2 days ago and he wouldnt eat... I called petco to ask them what they fed him and they said LIVE MICE. So even though I was against it I had to buy mice for him so he would eat. I've just fed him a live mouse and I am really sorry I had to do it to the mouse but I cant fault the lizard I can only fault petco for feeding their monitor lizards live mice. He wont eat anything but live mice if u can do a vid on switching them from live mice to insects or just reply to my comment I'd appreciate it greatly but I've had to go out and buy mice for him. I've named him mufasa from lion king as well btw in case u were wondering. I've done everything "correct" as correct as u could say it is because no one knows exactly what "correct" is but he still will only eat live.

@theanimaladdiction
@theanimaladdiction 4 года назад
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS actually no they did not I informed them they are insectivores and they should eat insects but they just laughed and said they dont want to do that because they already got them eating rodents but rodents arent good for them and they cant be healthy on a rodent diet. They just think that that's okay but it's simply not and now I'm stuck with a savannah monitor who will only eat live mice and I really hate feeding live mice to any animal especially when mice in general dead or alive arent even good for them. I would really appreciate it if u could put up a video on the subject it would help me out a lot.
@NORTHERNEXOTICS

Ive recorded it . It'll be live tonight 7pm GMT . English time. However before then the advice is needed now so a few things you can try. One is a tad cruel but works. Starve him for a few days and then offer bugs that he can chase and eat. Not dubias because they burrow. Crickets are good. Another option is to keep going with insects and not give in. So always offer insects . If he doesn't eat them take them out and leave him for a few hours. Then try bugs again. If he still doesn't eat take them out and keep trying. If you give in and feed him a mouse he will learn that he just has to wait and a mouse will come. Savs can go a fair amount of time with out food. They scavenge in the wild and are very active looking for bugs

You don’t have to agree but research shows that even in the wild their diet consists of mostly insects. Mice make up very little of their diet. In captivity they also don’t get any where near the amount of exercise they do in the wild so constant feeding of high fat rodents is going to cause them to become obese and shorten their life. You should do more research on wild monitors to understand how they eat in the wild.
@thekingofnothing8895
@thekingofnothing8895 3 года назад
@@jasonevans3520 absolutely agree. Just because they get full grown doesn't mean that they no longer thrive off of insects. Part of what makes Savannahs horrible pets is the cost of their diet, which is a lot of insects, with a wide variety.

Savannah’s in the wild way eggs, insects, and rodents, the rodents are high in much needed calcium which insects lack, so if you are strictly feeding your monitor insects, at least give him calcium, because they do indeed need those rodents you swear against, so while you may think you helping, your hurting your lizard and not letting it grow to it’s full potential
@NORTHERNEXOTICS

Insects are infact extremely high in calcium due to there exo skeleton . The occasional full body prey is acceptable to add a diffrent nutritional base to there diet however ever pathological scientific report I've read to do with the stomach contents of a wild Savannah monitor show zero signs of roadents. I was also surprised to see a high content of millipedes in there adult diet tho

So, our almost 3 yr old Savannah has regurgitated his past 2 feedings. Not everything, just 1 of the 2-3 mice that he ate. We thought not much of it, thinking that it was just too much and he needed to toss up the last mouse. But now we think we have a bigger issue on our hands because... We fed him 5-6 raw ground turkey balls 2 days ago, about golf ball sized, which he gobbled up just fine. Well, yesterday we smelled the most foul stench in his room. Sure enough a small wet spot, seemingly poo, was on his cage floor. We assumed poo or regurgitation on his ground turkey that he was too full on. He seemed fine otherwise. We let him float in a nice warm bath while we cleaned his cage and put him back afterwards... As we were getting into bed last night, there was that smell again! But this time, it was pretty tiny. Concerned, we cleaned it up and went to bed to address it in the morning... This morning we went to see him and GOOD LORD another vomit but this one was much more than the others and he was just chillin, sleeping right by it as if he didn't even move after throwing up. It is really worrying is now and I'm calling the vet first thing in the morning to get him in! We have had Savannahs off and on for most of our lives, so we're no stranger to their needs and he's pretty set up in the spare bedroom with a large chicken coop enclosure, two heat sources, den with heating and light. He gets frozen mice, fresh water, 2nd water source and bath time to soak and swim. Hes overall very happy and healthy, until this....HELP!!!! Has anyone else experienced this before? If so, what was your baby's problem? Was he sick, parasites, etc? Did he get better and how?
@thekingofnothing8895

Savannahs eat mostly insects, especially as adults. No matter how big a Savannah is, feeding them a wide variety of insects will always be best and most healthy. Things like meats and vertebrate prey will only bring bad health, unless they are treats only once every month to two months

Savannah Monitors most definitely eat rodents out in the wild and are very much capable of eating them in captivity. I would feed my Savannah Monitor a variety of insects and rodents. This is their natural diet
@rundan8620
@rundan8620 5 лет назад
NORTHERN EXOTICS Savannah Monitors are not exclusive to Guyana. They cover large areas in Africa that have a plentiful population of rats and mice. As far as other rodents that are similar; their body make up is the same when it comes to the nutritious value of rats and mice. Monitors have been eating rodents of all types in captivity and out in the wild. There’s nothing wrong with feeding them to your pet monitor. Like the human diet everything is okay in moderation.
@NORTHERNEXOTICS
@NORTHERNEXOTICS 5 лет назад
Add a rodant diet with lack of space as most Savannah monitor keepers keep them in smaller enclosures if a recipe for fatty liver decease.
@rundan8620
@rundan8620 5 лет назад
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS Which is why I said everything is good in moderation. And Savannah Monitor keepers shouldn't be keeping their reptiles in small cages. That's a very specific case you're making. There's nothing wrong with feeding your Monitor a rodent from time to time. In fact, that's a far more naturalistic diet than exclusively feeding them insects.
@NORTHERNEXOTICS
@NORTHERNEXOTICS 5 лет назад
That all depends on what the insects are gutloaded on and the age and food that the rat was on. A rat pup has zero nutrition that's strong enough to aid a Savannah monitor with the lack of bone strength and muscle growth
@rundan8620
@rundan8620 5 лет назад
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS Sorry but that's not true. A baby Monitor that is appropriately sized to eat a rat/mouse pup can benefit from that feeding when offered occasionally. Like I said everything in moderation will be fine. This practice has been expressed for decades in the reptile community. Over weight Monitors are almost exclusivity due to the fact that Reptile keepers don't allow their pets to explore outside of their cage or their cage is far too small. Just like the human diet exercise is very much apart of it. Even offering insects as a strict diet without exercise or a large cage can cause over weight issues. In conclusion as long as the reptile owner is competent with their pets; an enriched diet is not only perfect, its more naturalistic.
