Don't be fooled by the city slicker puffer jacket, this man knows his gear! I think this concept has a lot of promise when you think about it, taking all the tools that require a handle and combining into one modular system. I tried to convince Silky to do something like this, they haven't returned my calls which means they are working on it 😀
Ben does know his stiff, but I just don't think it'll last. Too many moving parts. easy to get mud or snow inside it which will likely make it work badly or dull the saw. And if you do get mud inside and it dries, you're going to have a hard time trying to clean it out. Then their's the price. I can by 2 good saws, 2 good shovels, and 2 good hatchets for a lot less than this.
@@randyyeager I’ve been using it a ton in snow and mud. The downfall is the saw. It’s not as good as a silky but if they upgraded the teeth on it it would be amazing.
As a kit yes it would be great for that. I like the fact you can separate the shovel and put that in your pack and then the axe portion on the outside.
Just a thought on the vibration you said it had when chopping. I'm wondering if it might be the saw blade vibrating within the handle and not the clamp mechanism because it seems that the clamp mechanism by design would be tight when clamped. You might try wrapping the saw blade with a rag or some thin foam so when it's inserted into the handle it doesn't have the ability to vibrate if it's the culprit. Heck maybe wrap the blade with fire rope then you'd have some fire starter as well.
You covered this, but looks very wide for splitting. Most of my camp axes have been quite thin. For hiking I think I prefer a folding saw and a large knife, but looks good for a truck tool.
A bit pricey as you point out Ben, but this is by far the best of this genre that I've seen. I look forward to seeing future evaluations after you've had it for a while. So far, so good!
It's a pretty cool concept and looks to be pretty high quality in construction according to your review. Expensive sure but if it has that second kinda cool on top of its functionality it could have a market for those folks that want that Rolex watch sort of survival tool. And let's not forget it's designed and made in the USA and that deserves a slight premium in my opinion as long as the product is awesome I'll pay more for a truly USA made product. Thanks as always for another great review👍
Sean Duncan: IMO, if you don't think China can make quality items you'd be wrong. Quality control is the responsibility of the manufacturer regardless of where it's made. You get what you pay for. So when you say made in the USA it sounds patriotic while the American manufacturers have their stuff made cheap in China because they won't pay them to made it better and then pass it on to you. That's called increased profit.
@Bob Jones Nah, it's not about whether or not China can make quality stuff. I'm sure any country of people can make quality stuff if and when there is incentive to do so. It's about supporting American jobs when you can. Of course it's not always possible but that doesn't mean one can't try. One thing you know if your supporting American Jobs with your purchasing power is that your at least supporting actual Americans that aren't horribly exploited like working people are In other countries. And if you support American companies with American made products you can also reasonably assume that there are less nefarious business practices involved in the company then exist in companies in China. You know, things like patent theft, extreme labor exploitation, and quality control including the use of harmful production materials. I'm not saying that some of that doesn't also happen with US companies but when it does its usually do to the companies outsourcing product production to other countries.
@@duncdunc76 I'm for supporting American manufacturing 100%. The ONLY reason we have "made in China" is greed and profit through cheap labor. You can only blame American manufacturers for that. Reminds me of a speech Lee Iacocca once gave bragging about how his Chryslers were made in America. He was so proud until someone in the audience reminded him all the parts he used were made abroad.
@Bob Jones Greedy people in general are the ones to blame including Greedy business owners of manufacturing facilities. However the consumer that must have the cheapest product at the expense of some on else's labor exploitation is no small part. Could the rich and Greedy stand to make less, Absolutely! But those buying crap on Amazon to save a few bucks instead of going down to the local shop to buy the product also bear some responsibility. Those that want to be paid a fair wage in their own jobs but then practice purchasing methods that undercut others ability to make a fair wage must start realizing where it has gotten us. There are so many people out their looking for the best deal on something not thinking about if it's so cheap there is no way someone's labor is not being exploited. I wish we had the ability to rein in the really Greedy shady sons of you know what but the capitalist system isn't set up well right now to do that so it unfortunately becomes the major responsibility of each and every person to use their purchasing power as wisely as possible. Because right now, capitalistic greed has the good American people and the goodnpeople around the world right where it wants them. Basically fighting against each other for scraps while the rich, shady, and Greedy people rape the world!
I hope you and your family had a nice Christmas and I also want to wish you a Happy New Year. I never knew this tool existed. Thanks for the review. I can understand why they're asking that much. I just hope it's not priced to high for their target market. While being to expensive for the value for me. I wish I he company success. God bless and stay safe.
The hook/aka bottle opener? I would expect a better design. Especially because the material appears to be one with the axe head. That to be a hook spike nail claw/cutter, similar to the spike on linesmen pliers. Can then be used to retrieve nails, wire, streach/cut wire from fences/building interiors. Stab into, hook into, pry/cut through sheet metal/car body, like using a can opener. For the $$$, I most certainly expect: A better sheath clasp. Not a magnet, a webbing clip instead. The blade cover, a simple tough plastic, bright color. And include a file, or sharpening stone. And the hollow butt end of handle: Include a small container with water proof match, tinder, or simple bic lighter. Or a good bayonet style knife. This could be more of an all in one tool, for the $$$, would likely sell better as a complete package. I expect Mr Wranglstar to be testing this soon.
🤔 Just buy a Silky saw, a Cold Steel shovel and a Hultafors axe, and you have 3 quality tools and $100 left for a nice knife 😅 this "Multitool" is built to fail imo...
This is improved version of several old versions produced in ex Soviet union for civilians... Looks really better and more modern, but idea and patent is really old
First off this "ax" is more like a hawk. Secondly, taking the ax and leaving the shovel home defeats the whole advantage of this "kit". Just buy a quality ax. Also I'd be curious to see how the ax handle holds up the first time you miss and bring the clamp mechanism down on the wood log you're trying to chop. If you break that hollow handle made out of ??? you're out three tools... not one. IMO, invest in the quality brand name tools that have stood the test of time.
