The P2s were designed to handle the express passenger traffic on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen main line, which is noted for its steep gradients and tight curves. Double-headed Pacifics were prohibited from the line, so the heaviest traffic was usually handled by double-heading two smaller engines. Gresley sought to overcome this need with a Mikado (2-8-2) design with four driving axles for greater adhesion compared to an A3 Pacific. Initial plans were drawn up in 1932, and consisted of a 2-8-2 Mikado design using an A3-type boiler and dual chimney. Whilst the design was still being finalised, two engines were authorised in February 1933. At the end of March, this initial order was reduced to one locomotive. The firebox was lengthened, and a double blastpipe was added. The Kylchap chimney/blastpipe arrangement was chosen, along with an ACFI feed water heater, and smoke deflectors reminiscent of the W1 No 10000 "Hush-Hush".
After the successful experiments with the Lentz rotary cam poppet valve gear on the D49s, Gresley decided to fit similar valve gear to the P2s and directed Associated Locomotive Equipment Ltd to design a set of Lentz valve gear for the P2s. The gear was powered by two camshafts above the cylinders and at right angles to the locomotive horizontal centre line. These camshafts were synchronised with the rotation of the driving axles. Admission and exhaust valves were controlled by six scroll cams mounted on these two camshafts.
Associated Locomotive Equipment Ltd also provided the Kylchap double blastpipe, which was designed to take different blastpipe tops, and taper blocks allowing different blastpipe cross-sectional areas to be tried.
Initial drawings were provided in July 1933. Further changes would be made through to March 1934. The smoke deflector plates were moved forward so that they extended far ahead of the smokebox. Wind tunnel tests led to the deflectors being made vertical. A V-shaped cab front was also added. During these changes, five more P2 locomotives were ordered, but with a choice of valve gear left open.
This first locomotive, No. 2001 Cock o' the North was completed in May 1934. Early indicator tests showed low final compression pressures. This was found to be due to excessive clearance spaces in the poppet valve layout, and was fixed by adding a new exhaust cam for the left-hand cylinder, and advancing the closure point of the exhaust valves from 65 percent to 50 percent of the stroke. The scroll cams and rollers experienced very heavy wear due to their contact occurring at a point. These were substituted with stepped cams with parallel surfaces which contacted along a line. In March 1935, a circulating system for the cambox oil was added. This was powered by small pumps and incorporated a small copper pipe radiator mounted on the frame.
In December 1934, No. 2001 accompanied by O.V.S. Bulleid travelled to the locomotive testing station at Vitry-sur-Seine near Paris for two months of testing. The ambitious test programme had mixed success due to problems maintaining boiler pressure, and overheating axleboxes and bearings. The latter appear to have been due to the relative lack of vibration on the test station, leading to occasional breaks in the lubrication films failing to seal immediately. Blastpipe trials at Vitry found the best combination to be a 6in diameter blastpipe top with No. 1 taper blocks fitted. The exhaust beats were found to be uneven, and unequal clearance volumes were suspected. These were reduced slightly by modifying the steam passages on its return to Doncaster, but this did not fix the problem. After further testing on its return, No. 2001 entered service in Scotland.
The ACFI feed water heater on No. 2001 gave a lot of problems, and was never fitted to the other P2s. The heater used exhaust steam to heat the water before it was injected into the boiler. To work properly, the locomotive had to run continuously with its regulator open. This was not possible on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen route which the P2 was designed for, and so the ACFI feed water heater was wasted.
The second locomotive, No. 2002 Earl Marischal was completed in October 1934. This was identical to No. 2001 Cock o' the North but with piston valves, Walschaerts/Gresley valve gear, and the ACFI feed water heater was removed. This also ran a series of trials before entering regular daily service in Scotland in June 1935. Due to the use of Walschaerts and Gresley valve gear rather than the poppet valve gear, No. 2002's draughting characteristics were different to those of No. 2001.
2001 Cock o' the North May 1934 September 1944
2002 Earl Marischal October 1934 June 1944
2003 Lord President June 1936 December 1944
2004 Mons Meg July 1936 November 1944
2005 Thane of Fife August 1936 January 1943
2006 Wolf of Badenoch September 1936 May 1944

@@iainflett7623 As the final member of the original P2 class, she entered traffic on the 5th September 1936 as No. 2006 and gained the name of Wolf of Badenoch and was given the works number 1842 . Like the other engines in the class the name was inspired by Scottish Folklore. The Wolf of Badenoch was the name given to Alexander Stewart the Earl of Buchan (1343-1405) the fourth son of King Robert II of Scotland who had earned the nickname after his ruthless treatment of his enemies and the burning down of Elgin Cathedral in 1390. Like the other engines in the last batch of P2’s the locomotive featured a streamlined front end, Walscherts valve gear and piston valves. Although it had originally been planned to fit the engine with an identical boiler to the other engines the decision was made to fit the engine with a new diagram 108 pattern boiler no. 8934. This boiler featured a larger combustion chamber to help complete total combustion and required the two tube plates to be placed further together. The engines originally ordered boiler was kept as a spare being utilised on No.2002 when the latter’s own boiler was due for repairs. The inclusion of a larger combustion chamber was suggested by OVS Bulleid who calculated that moving the tubeplates 1ft closer together, and correspondingly making the combustion chamber 1ft longer would along with a larger air space in the fire grate incorporated in all the later P2’s and in the rebuilds of No. 2001 and No. 2002, would create total combustion. The enlarged firebox meant that three extra rows of roof stays were fitted along with five inspection doors on each side of the boiler. This boiler later became the prototype for the 118a boiler design which was used on Peppercorns’ A1 class locomotives. From new the engine was allocated to Haymarket depot and seems to have been the only member of the P2 class not to venture south on the East Coast Main Line to King’s Cross during its life as a Mikado. Soon the engine was transferred to Aberdeen where it stayed until October 1942 when it returned to Haymarket. The engine did not have its own regular crews whilst in Aberdeen, instead being used as a general engine in the No. 1 Link who worked the passenger trains and No. 2 link who worked the fast fish and meat trains. No. 2006 was withdrawn for rebuilding as a Pacific on the 28th January 1944 having completed 287,187 miles as a 2-8-2 locomotive. The rebuilt locomotive was released from Doncaster Works on the15th April but did not retain its original boiler which had instead been fitted to the rebuild of No.2002. However this boiler only lasted in service a further 18 months before being condemned. The engine was fitted with boiler No. 8796 which had been fitted to No.2002 and during its life as an A2/2 a received a further three different boilers. After rebuilding the engine emerged in unlined black livery with NE only on the tender carrying the number 2006 on the cabside. Under the renumbering scheme the engine was renumbered 506 on the 30th June 1946 before being repainted into full Apple Green livery at Cowlairs in October 1947. During a light repair at Cowlairs in December 1948 then number was changed to 60506 using small figures closely spaced again on the cabside with ‘LNER’ remaining on the tender side until July 1950 when the engine was repainted in British Railways livery. Originally the engine re-entered traffic nameless, the original nameplates still attached to the now discarded streamlined front ends. however by early June 1944 the nameplates had been rescued, cleaned and replaced on the engine. After rebuilding the engine returned to Haymarket shed where it remained until the 8th August 1949 when it was once again sent to Aberdeen Ferryhill. This lasted a year until the engine was again transferred to Haymarket before the move of the whole class south of the border with the engine becoming allocated to New England shed in November 1949. During a short period in early 1954 Grantham shed borrowed No. 60506 and No. 60504 and used the pair on the 10.00 hours ‘Flying Scotsman’ from King’s Cross. During its life as an A2/2 the engine accumulated 629,013 miles, finally being withdrawn and finally cut up at Doncaster Works on the 4th April 1961.

That engine is absolutely gorgeous. Not only is it a P2 but it’s streamlined as well. Magnificent! 😍 Steams very well and the speed is something to be admired. Absolutely perfect and clean craftsmanship by the owner. This is miniature steam engineering at its finest. A very good mate of mine is making a few 5 inch gauge locomotives over here in South Australia. He’s building Australia’s only Berkshire class of locomotive, the long since scrapped South Australian Railways 720 Class 2-8-4s. He’s also building our iconic SAR 520 Class 4-8-4 Northerns of which two are preserved. Class leader no. 520 Sir Malcolm Barclay Harvey is presently being restored to operation at the home base of the SteamRanger Heritage Railway at Mount Barker. For those who don’t know, the Mount Barker to Victor Harbor branch line is one of the longest preserved railways anywhere in the world. At an impressive distance of 50 miles or 80 kilometres. Videos of this branch line can be found on my channel. Thanks for sharing! Cheers Caleb

I swear there is just "something" special about British express passenger engines,something that no other loco type seems to have.I cant even say exactly what it is, its a package, the lines,the lovely big spoked drivers,the colour schemes and more that makes them unlike anything else.Im Australian so ive not seen many of them, i did ride behind 4472 when she was out here, but that was a VERY long time ago! Finest engines in the world.I did speak at length with one of the rostered drivers of 4472 when she was here, he was steam era driver who had operated pretty well every class of loco used int he last couple of decades of steam here and he couldn't speak highly enough of 4472.I imagine hes passed now, very glad i got the chance to discuss that with him when i did.We did have something close here, 4 lovely 3 cyl S class pacifics that were used on our premier train, we even had a speed record briefly! Alas none of those locos survived the torch and were all cut up decades before i was born.I hope one day we re-build one,we at least have some tenders and frames for a start! Everyone says its too hard and will never happen, but they said that a big boy would never steam again and yeah.... We do have a couple of full builds going here already so i live in hope that one day i see one of these myself.If i won lotto, id damn well build one!

@Crimsonedge1
@Crimsonedge1 4 года назад
Expensive is not really the word. It's custom. Can't really put a price on the work of the engineer that fabricated every part to scale. They do have prices put on them of course as they are bought, sold and traded within engineering societies but for this one, you'd wouldn't be far wrong asking for £20,000. Even the small 0-6-0 tanks can go for £5000-£8000. Up the scale from 5" to 7.5" and you can whack another £10,000 on top. There are ones out there that go for the price of a small house. You've got to be into the lifestyle with both feet to own one of these though. Ideally with a van so you can travel round the country visiting the layouts of the various model engineering societies up and down the country. Especially with an engine like the one shown here. No doubt gets pride of place wherever it goes.

The 2-8-2 locomotives are called the Mikado. The first Mikado type locomotive was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in the US for the Nippon Railways of Japan. Mikado in English means the emperor of Japan. The first Mikado in Japan is the JGR Class 9700. 9700 is a good engine, but sadly this engine was scrapped! This was almost the most powerful class of Locomotive on the LNER producing 40,320 lb 'Tractive Effort' only exceeded by 4-6-4 1 off no W1 class rebuild in 1937 no 60700 with 41,435 lb Can't understand why there is not a 'great big grin' on drivers face, Would be on mine !

LNER P1/1 with booster 47,000, P1/2 42,500, LNER U1 72,940, Thompson A2/3 - 40430 and just squeezing in Peppercorn A2 also at 40,430. 2005 Thane of Fife rebuild Jan 1943, rest May to December 1944, but if you take the withdrawal from traffic for rebuild, rather than rebuild completion the dates become 1942 - 43 respectively, so both can be right :-)
