The end of my battery going dead for the last tip caused me to unsubscribe. I was watching this for a friend who was thinking about getting Ozone 10. I have found that the O10 master assistant helps me identify potential issues with my mixes. When I'm happy with the mix, I run it and look at the EQ adjustments (static and dynamic) that it comes up with. If I see any big adjustments, I solo the band(s) to see what's affected, then go back into my mix. Sometimes there is some masking going on, sometimes it's a monitoring blind spot in my room (it's treated pretty well, but it's a tricky space) so I recheck the mix with headphones. Sometimes it's just an obvious problem I hadn't noticed, and sometimes it's just an aesthetic choice that I wanted.

I have not yet upgraded to Ozone 10, but as of Ozone 9 I have occasionally used the “Mastering Assistant” in a sort of similar way as what you are describing with the new ‘stabiliser’ component. What I mean is that once I have the mix on it’s feet and I’m pretty happy, I will run mastering assistant and look in particular at where the dynamic eq is being deployed. I do this because I know the dynamic eq is being used by the mastering assistant algorithm to reign in any build ups that might cause the maximising limiter to work harder than might be preferable. It can act as a helpful second pair of ears (as you noted) that points me towards build ups that might benefit from a little tweak. I also look at whether or not the M.A. does or doesn’t employ the multi band to reign in the low end. If it doesn’t then generally my low end balance is in pretty good shape. If it does employ the multiband for the low end, I view that as an indicator that I might want to go back into the mix and resolve any issues.

As an artist who's (slowly) learning how to master, Ozone 10 has been a huge help but have found the assistant to be much less useful than the presets. I usually click through the presets and then work backwards from there lol. Def not top tier mastering but it's incredibly useful to see how each plugin, in their particular order affects the track. Also thanks for the tip about less is more, often forget that especially with the number of tools Ozone has.

good stuff! i haven't used ozone in ages! i may dust it off. i'm on 9 because 10 just didn't seem like THAT much of an upgrade and i rarely use it anymore. I've been using smart limit, master desk, and pro L2 a lot more in my mastering chain (rarely all of them). I have like 10-15 plugins in my mastering chain and often only use about 4-5 of them. but having those options to just turn on/off is so helpful. a bunch of EQs to more or less do what you demonstrated with the ozone EQ, a tape emulation if i want it, the 2 limiters i mentioned earlier, and a compressor (api 2500), and most recently added magic processors/clippers (the oven/looptrotter sat2rate). I often end up going with a Bax EQ to limiter 1 (used more as a clipper) to another EQ to a final limiter for extra volume. but sometimes it needs a bit more love and i love having those options.
@WillBorza
@WillBorza Год назад
The best feature of Oz10 has got to be the new soft clipper in the maximizer. Do you have Plugin Doctor? The day I dropped Masterdesk into plugin doctor to analyze it was the last day I ever used Masterdesk.
@CreativeMindsAudio
@CreativeMindsAudio Год назад
@@WillBorza I don't have plugin doctor, but masterdesk is probably not gonna be used much anymore with my newest plugins tbh. it feels redundant. It is just fast and easy for lower paying mixes tbh, as you said workflow 😂. If I can throw masterdesk true peak on, BAX EQ, and a limiter it'll satisfy most people. Only real reason i keep it in my chain. But I am building out a mastering workflow slowly for when clients can't hire a dedicated mastering engineer (aka me sending you work).

which of the five mastering suggestions did you find most useful? 1 less is more 2 how to use the stabilizer 3 order of operation 4 cc ozone 10 eq speed hack 5 man versus machine I found less is more helpful to me, because as an audio engineer, I have never mastered my own music, I have always sent it to a mastering professional. I have been using ozone only for a few hours, mastering four songs that I mixed less is more has already saved me time and headache. how do use a stabilizer helped because I probably would’ve left it on as a processing tool instead of using it to analyze what’s taking place in my mix order of operation. Again, invaluable to me as a mastering novice. ozone 10 EQ speed hack who doesn’t want to have their music sound like a record without spending a week doing it. Lots of great takeaways for someone relatively new like myself who dabbles in mastering mostly out of necessity. The concept of zero sum compromise makes sense but I never thought of it in those terms before. Also definitely going to try the chain you suggested, though I'm still left wondering what the benefit of unlimited maximizers would be - or even two or three. I'd love to hear an explanation for this.
@AutPen38
@AutPen38 8 месяцев назад
I think that many Mastering engineers use 2 limiters because it simply sounds (slightly) better to have a softer clipping stage to gradually reduce the peaks, rather than chop off 6dB or more with a hard limiter in one fell swoop. I don't think there would be any benefit to using two identical hard limiters one after the other though. I think it's more that you want a "little bit of limiting" to catch the worst of the peaks, and then another to finish the job.

Useful video, as you say master it with your ears first, they didn't have all these gizmos in 1950s. I think the ' loudness wars' has given rise to these products. I've been mastering a tune recently by ear alone and numerous quality speakers and headphones to see how it translates to them all. Ozone has 'checked' my mix and overall sound by about 2% and reigned in just a few peaky bits. It most certainly hasn't created my sound. Lots of tiny adjustments to individual notes have balanced/ levelled up the overall sound. I don't use the sliders on my mixing desk so much but go into the actual notes in specific parts to make things go up or down(volume)or left and right(panning). Very time consuming but definitely works and highlights and low lights things giving a very nice stereo image.As many of you will have found just tweaking up or down a slider on the desk can off balance the whole mix. I am inspired by Alan Parsons mixing, having listened to his projects from my youth . For all young people mixing up to date tunes, sit back and listen to Alan Parsons dynamics, extraordinary how it's all in check.

Do you have any thoughts on phase (or other) issues introduced by using multiband processing like Ozone Dynamics and KClip? Would love to see a video on that, or just know what your thoughts might be! Thanks for the great content

I try to avoid aggressive phase manipulation as much as possible. I’ll use a MB comp maybe 1/100 times. Most tracks I get don’t need that aggressive of a processor. Never tried KClip

@@HighwayNegative KClip is great! Especially with the oversampling options. I use it exclusively on my drum bus. In a mastering context, however, you may have better luck with Flatline or Standard Clip.

Great video! About to upgrade my ozone to version 10! I’ve been trying to stay on top of the future by seeing what audio companies are working with A.I., let me know if you have any recommendations!

great video i always go with EQ 1st never really use limited i don't use the Stabilizer at all i agree less is more i only mix and master for Dynamics i love how they respected the music back in the day and it was about the song 1st so i really take that Approach and never mix or master for loudness i mean you don't even see videos on RU-vid showing how to mix or master for Dynamics which is sad anyway good video u have a video that explains why you ordered your chain like that?

Hi! I've set up several instances of Ozone 10 bus presets on some of my group and subgroup tracks in Cubase 12 for a large orchestral template. When they're active, my latency and usage meter or close to 70% (with all 300 instrument tracks disabled). When they're off it jumps back to closer to 0 latency. What can I adjust in Ozone 10 to reduce this dramatic latency cost?
@WillBorza
@WillBorza 3 месяца назад
Ozone, like many high quality mastering plugins, is heavy on CPU. Some algorithms are heavier than others. For example, in the maximizer, IRC LL will help keep your latency much lower than the other IRC’s

I am a little confused. After you make your master when you put the master onto a new channel and then use Ozone 10 AI to analyze your mix why don’t you use the unmastered version and see what ozone does and compare the two? Thank you.

How about automating the Stabilizer to work normal in the Chorus and then with less amounts in the Verse or at just the Frequencies that it needs?
@WillBorza
@WillBorza Год назад
Even then you’re still destabilizing your transients. At 11%, the stabilizer is pushing your mix +/- 1dB
