I've never heard of conditioning with saddle soap. I use it to clean very dirty leather with some water and a brush so it gets nicely lathered up. My experience is that it's a great cleaner that dries the leather out a bit, not a conditioner at all. I always have to condition after using saddle soap. It leaves a film because you're supposed to use it with water and wipe it off, just like you wouldn't use soap as a hand lotion.
The title says conditioners AND cleaner, and he has a video about how to clean and condition boots and he says exactly what you said, I think he just wanted to test it and see what happens
@@gerardoesparza8650 settle down, this guy will forget more about leather and boots than you will ever know. He knows exactly what saddle soap is for. Look at the rest of his videos.
Thanks for the love Rose Anvil! Would love to send you our Water Protectant No. 3 formula as it was specifically formulated to protect leather against the elements/moisture/water/snow/etc. The beautiful thing about this protectant is that it is able to provide a high level of water repellency WITHOUT clogging up the pores of the leather. This allows the leather to continue to breathe, which is super important. As you likely know, all of our products are not only made from ALL-NATURAL, but cosmetic grade ingredients. Don't hesitate to reach out should you have questions at any time! Cheers.
Can you use the Chamberlains products in conjunction? Also would love to see a comparison between some of the tops, Bick, Obenaufs, Leather Honey, Saphir, etc
Recently went to Argentina and your videos really helped me choose a lot of quality leather goods, since they produce a lot of leather for an affordable price!
I use mink oil for my walking boots and I often walk in very wet conditions. For the best reults you need to leave them for at least 12 hours after application.
Your channel is becoming one of the *best* leather care, leather education, and overall knowledge out there. The only reason I didn't say it's "the best" is because I don't know of all the other channels. Definitely top in my book. Cheers mate! Learning & enjoying your videos a ton every upload.
Love your videos. You are obvioisly a gifted leather worker. However, these are fair criticisms. And it's nice to see a few mistakes sometimes. Reminds us RU-vidrs don't always have a team of writers. But yes sir, there are a few things to note. The saddle soap as many others have pointed out. It's purely a cleaner. It is important to apply with a wet applicator only after rubbing the applicator on the soap cake until it begins to froth. Then either wipe off immediately, or lit it dry then brush off. The discoloration you noted with the saddle soap is a result of it drying out the leather beneath. That's when you would reach for the other items you have in this video. As far as the conditioners you have in your video, they each have their strengths for specific use cases. The mink oil is an excellent choice for restoring older leather pieces. It also contains natural water resistant properties. Not as strong as the Aussie, but certainly better than the other items. I say that, but the leather conditioner has the potential to give the mink oil a run for it's money. Depending on the type. Fiebings leather balm has atom wax mixed in with it. This serves as a wax coating when buffed in. The Aussie is great for purses or handbags that are exposed to the elements due to it's higher water resistance. This is owed to it's petroleum base with need wax additive. All great products depending on what you need to use it on. Just taking the chance to return the favor for all of the knowledge you've shared to everyone that has watched your excellent videos!
There's nothing quite like having a quality top grain leather product like wallets, jackets, bags or boots run down over decades of wear,...then applying Chamberlain's to clean and protect them. It's like noticing an old friend with a new haircut. You're like "Wait a second,..you're amazing. I'd forgotten."
Good comparison. When cleaning my saddle and horse gear saddle soap works into the leather best when the applicator is quite damp. The moisture on the applicator allows the saddle soap to lather up which allows best cleaning and penetration.
I use sno-seal on all of my leathers, wallet, leather iPhone case, boots and work gloves. It works great to block out the water and softens the leather well.
The Best? The best I've used is Obenauf's, they have a wax and a oil. They do darken the leather quite a bit, but if you're worried about work boots that aren't meant to be pretty, Obenauf's is fantastic. I've brought weathered and sundried saddlebags back from the dead with that stuff, really impressive.
I came across your channel and found an excellent amount of information on boots which are so popular today. I invited my granddaughter and son to watch we are all hooked on your programming...you never disappoint..keep it going.
Great video! Really well done. I have a few leather chairs at home and need to condition them as they are looking a little dry. I use mink oil for my boots also and have received some negative comments in the past, but haters gonna hate my friend. Thanks again, wishing you much more success on this channel!!!
Thanks for the video I’ve heard a lot about all the conditioners you showed. I was leaning towards the chamberlains but after this video I’m sold. Thanks!
We just did a GIANT order of harnesses which means we have tons of scraps! I just need you to send me your name and mailing address to service@roseanvil.com and we will get some in the mail for you! To make things easier on my end I will be sending these out on Tuesday in a big batch so please send me your address by Monday (10/28)! So don't miss that deadline if you want some. *Unfortunately we can only send free coasters to people with a US address.
Good info...I'm a firefighter and have started doing a little leather work for my department so I'll have to look into some of the ones I've not used.. Thanks for the video
You should also check out Obenauf's! Their heavy duty stuff is popular with loggers and people who work in extreme conditions. It may be something to consider.
I always like seeing how different products work. I am truly stuck on Obenauf's myself. I also use a Swiss fix wax for things like old leather bags and boots on top of the Obenauf's. Thanks for testing!
Finally , an unbiased review , Please don't stop , how about other Manufacturers and products , Especially to restore older , high Quality shoes like she'll Cordovan And shark ! Keep up the good work , many Thanks ! Bill

I like to use Nokona baseball glove conditioner. I have used it for more than 20 years on my baseball and softball gloves and it works better than any other glove conditioner on the market so I figured I’d use it on my boots and have been for more than five years religiously with extremely satisfying results every time. My two cents
I always used plain old mink oil, but I got a jacket I wanted to soften up, and I found a product by Obenauf"s. It has some additional additives to deter mold and mildew and bacteria. I've used it on three pr of boots, and applied it like twice in a few days, and that was all I did, seems to work well. Ingredients are not disclosed so there is some secret formula that they protect.
It’s more of just a comparison between stuff I have around the shop to show what they do to leather and any properties they have. Not really about how to use saddle soap. Maybe I’ll do a video on how to use saddle soap and a few tricks I’ve learned, for instance it works great as an edge slicking compound for straps.
As am I. I was taught to always make sure I followed up the saddle soap with a conditioner on all surfaces, just more or less depending on what part of the saddle it was. You could always tell on the saddles when someone forgot the conditioner, they would look dry and matted. Maybe it's different for the leather used in shoes.
Wow! I was almost going to tdonate my old purse!! But with Covid, supplies have been low. I love a good leather purse with a long strap. So glad I watched your video. Thanks!!
Just wanted to let you know that I LOVE your videos!! Your honest opinion is priceless & I truly appreciate your vast knowledge of leathers. Your videos are AWESOME!! Than you so much!!! 🙏😁🤩🤩🤩👍🏻👍🏻🙏🙏🙏
This was great, trying to restore a collectible jacket that wAs made in 2009 and has not been worn or used since purchase and in need of tlc and your video helped me weed out bad choices i almost made had i not seen your video. I probably would have ruined the jacket, so thank you so much!🤗👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thankyou for all the great content! Your videos are really informative and entertaining. And as someone who works in broadcast, I think your production values are great also!

very good video. all i have at home is the mink oil and i've been using that to condition my leather bags - so far no major issues. i find it to work the best on smooth leather (as it indicated on the oil container) , but i also use them on the pebble leather bags.
Thanks for the best of the 4 different leather cleaners. I have been wondering what to use. I think I will use the Chamberlain's Leather Milk. Thanks again.
I second the Obenauf's. The normal oil soaks in and makes leather nice and soft. It also has that wonderful New leather smell. The LP is more like a paste. I hear a lot of loggers and linesman use it to waterproof their boots. I think their stuff is worth checking out if you haven't!

So its just like hand lotions for dry skin. The protection is directly proportional to the oiliness and inversely proportional to residuelessness. Your favorite is the least protective.
Bought some Thursday boots scouts. Hated the leather, scratches so easily and so inconsistent, I believe it’s chrome excel. I later Invested in Allen Edmonds! Bravo!
Thanks for sharing. I clean my leather products with peroxide and condition with murray's beeswax you can also condition leather with palmer's cocoa butter hand lotion but the palmer's will need applied more often
I'm glad I came across your channel as I have a few leather pieces and would like to keep them in the best possible condition that I can. These pieces are an investment as I don't favor fast, unsustainable fashion. Your video was informative in learning possible conditioners for my leather garments. Thank you for sharing this useful information.
Great video and very informative. I appreciate the comparison and use of multiple leathers. I have boots in every color you included and enjoyed seeing the effect of each conditioner.
Shoes gear’s beeswax has worked awesome for me, you do need to use a horse hair brush followed by a heat gun to warm the boot and conditioner before applying.
The Chamberlain's Leather Milk is the best one. I have been using it for many years. Chamberlain's Leather Milk is very safe to all kinds of leather and colors because it doesn't react with leather to change original leather color. It also has very nice smell and the nice smell remains on the jackets for a long time. The jackers never go bad smell with the Chamberlain's Leather Milk.
I'm curious how Redwing's products (like the leather cream or conditioner) stack up to these. Also, at 6:27, he says Chamberlain "did the worst out of all of these," but then he says it's his favorite one at the end. I wasn't sure if I missed something in between.
You using the Aussie' , need to use a heat gun to thoroughly warm the leather beforehand. Continue to heat while applying. Repeat applications until it doesn't seem to penetrate. Allow to dry over night. Then buff. Can also apply on reverse.

U should test out sno seal too. Mink oil and sno seal are great. Mink oil for everyday use and sno seal for water and harsh environment where temperature can be difficult.
Can you do a video where you fully clean and treat some leather boots? I saw you did a video with some Timberlands but I’d love to see some start to finish care videos.
Ive been using Blackstone conditioner recently & really like it. Thank you for all the helpful tips. Those coasters would look great on the end tables i built!
Hey just a tip. I noticed you said that some left residue behind. As far as I know the Aussie is supposed to be buffed off. I imagine the others are the same. The saddle soap is supposed to be rinsed off I don’t think it’s supposed to go on without rinsing. I could be wrong but I have a good bit of experience with saddle soap and Aussie. The hazing you see is the wax in the products that should be buffed off. Hope this helps. Thanks! -Mike
Cool thanks for the info. I didn’t put it in the video but I let them all sit for a while and then buffed off any residual conditioner off with a cloth.
I think the best would be a combined approach. Condition with one product and protect with a second product. Additionally the Saddle Soap is mostly a cleaner.
